don’t ever take shit from anyone. ever. i don’t care if it’s the customers, co workers, managers, etc. it’s just coffee. also you’re going to mess up, feel like shit, and be a nervous wreck during ur first month in training. it happens to literally every barista. and always ask questions. even if they’re dumb. better 100 questions at the start then u working for 11 months straight and not knowing still. ( def not me btw haha )

Perfect response. I’ve seen far too many baristas let people run over them, wether it be customers or management. We are all human and should be treated as such. We are working for a corporation that does not care about us so we really do need to take the time to care for and defend ourselves. Thank you.

double and triple check that your whips have the rubber ring before charging them. after that, check one more time. this will make sense one day 😞

also make cheat sheets and study the app for recipies! mostly everything makes “sense” and sticks to a formula (a brown sugar oatmilk shaken espresso is, you guessed it, brown sugar syrup, oatmilk, and shots of espresso shaken with ice and also cinnamon lol). but some drinks have a random ingredient thrown in that maybe the average person wouldnt expect (a matcha frappuccino gets classic sweetener for some reason, for example). i made a cheat sheet of shot counts, syrup pumps, powder scoops, etc on my notes app and made it my lockscreen for 2 months. now im faster at bar than even people who got hired before me. it really makes a difference!

lol so sbux makes their whip creams in house (before i started i assumed they bought cans from the store LOL) and when charging them with nitrogen capsule things, you need to make sure the top piece has a white rubber circle on it so the nitrogen doesnt make the cream explode all over you lol :) some of us learned….the hard way…..so dont be like us :)

Stand up for yourself. Take ALL your breaks and ALL your mark outs. Never feel guilty or let your manager intimidate you for taking a sick day and no you do not have to find your own coverage. Report any and all management abuse to HR. Report any and all injuries no matter how small to workman’s comp with documentation. Take no crap from customers and if you ever feel unsafe walk away. The job is not worth your sanity. Don’t answer texts or calls from work on your day off—ever.

Read the employee handbook and highlight relevant parts—KNOW YOUR RIGHTS and enforce them. No one else will look out for your best interests like you can. Let it roll off your shoulders and don’t sweat anything management hounds you about (drive-through times, customer connections, etc.) You aren’t paid enough to stress. Do the job the best you can and then clock out.

You control the speed of the transaction - don’t be afraid to ask people to repeat something or ask for a minute to find the right button. If we’re out of something be prepared to offer an alternative. Never stop with “we’re out of that” and wait for a reaction - direct the flow. “We’re out of X but we do still have our Y or Z - do either of those sound good?”

Also, always confirm if it’s hot or iced to save confusion later - often people only ever get a drink iced so they forget to say “iced” because in their mind that’s how it comes standard so it’s good to confirm.

I’m sure you’ll do great!
