Had a girl come in about 15 minutes after opening. Hovered herself over my counter and put an empty cup in my face and said, "give me a refill" Just like that, not a please, and excuse me, a may I. Nothing. My response. Please move yourself off of my counter and away from my bar, I can only refill your coffee if you purchased it here and consumed it here, and I can't your cup back - health violation. Their response. I did get this here, I just came by. I looked at the sticker. And I said you got this yesterday at another store. I can't give you a free refill. You can buy a new cup. Then the cherry on top of this brain deadening situation. My floor mat of a shift comes out and asks what's going on then the customer bitches to him. SSV says oh I got you. Why can't they back us up. Why does management keep feeding into the growing entitlement. Basically policy doesn't matter. Why don't we just let these assholes come behind the bar and make their shitty drinks.

It sucks sm when our ssvs don’t back us up, especially knowing they were just regular baristas too in the exact situation before. They always flip a switch
here_forthefun78 points1y ago
I’m sorry your SSV didn’t back you up in this situation. That’s all I ever do in my shifts because I hate entitled, cheap customers getting their way. I always make it a priority to defend my partners when I know the customer is wrong
silversungoddess6 points1y ago
Ditto! And thankfully I have an SM who does the same!
reddskeleton46 points1y ago
I’m a customer, and I’m incredibly disappointed in your shift supervisor! If people get by with this crap, it just emboldens them. Plus, I’d imagine it makes baristas feel like they’re second class citizens. I want to see some upstart coffee business steal away all you SBux baristas by treating you better and paying you better. The customer is NOT always right!
hellopie79 points1y ago
I appreciate you **woke** customer lol. Really though it means a lot that you can empathize with us this way. <3
Royal_Concentrate_00 [OP]6 points1y ago
I've said before I don't feel human when I'm at work. Which is why I greatly appreciate any kind person.
reddskeleton2 points1y ago
In my alternate universe, I’m fabulously wealthy and can anonymously send people $$$ so they can do work that makes them happy and still afford to go to the doctor.
PoeTayto8826 points1y ago
As an SSV, Im sorry. I just know from my experience that we get a LOT of flack on customer connections so my priority is to make the moment right. I think in that situation, I probably would have told her that my barista was correct and that, while I'll do it for her this time, next time, we'll only do the refill if it had been bought that morning at our store and she had not left the premises.
Once again, I'm sorry you feel shafted, I hope to never make my baristas feel that way.
humiddefy6 points1y ago
If she didn't buy anything she wouldn't be filling out a survey, no? Why would you give her a free coffee in the first place? She's obviously scamming.
PoeTayto881 points1y ago
Oh absolutely, and I know this but there's a few ways that I could handle it from here. One, if she comes back in the next morning and I'm here and she tries the same stunt AGAIN, I can tell her, 'im sorry, but when I made this drink yesterday morning I told you that unless you bought it this morning, I would unable to fill the order.' so I do it preemptively. It also gives me the opportunity to spread the words to not only the rest of the crew/shifts, but also my SM. Who has told me that this is how I'm supposed to handle it. It also gives me a chance to gather information, such as her name and other such information, like her account id number. That way we can file and incident report - and if we fill enough of those on her, Starbucks itself will back us up when we tell her that she's not allowed inside our Starbucks anymore.
As for the survey, I know that of she doesn't pay she doesn't get a survey, but if we don't fulfill her order, and she calls customer service, they're going to give her a 20 dollar gifts card anyways and tell her, and then corporates breathing down our necks.
It's all about covering my ass, while also covering your ass. And obviously this is why I would handle it this way, I can't really speak for anyone else. I still wish your SSV would talk you through it so you could understand their logic.
humiddefy2 points1y ago
Ah gotcha, that makes sense. I work at Tarbucks so we have a little more latitude in dealing with these kind of situations and also our own loss prevention department that can interject. We still get scammed though, usually by people claiming they were here last Tuesday and were very dissatisfied and need their drink remade at once.
wildaloofrebel5510 points1y ago
Starbucks gives free refills?!??
Royal_Concentrate_00 [OP]18 points1y ago
Lol yes. If they have the app and they are in the Cafe they can get a refill of hot coffee, cold brew, iced coffee or brewed tea.
mgordon1410 points1y ago
Why on earth is this getting down voted to oblivion? I find it a fair question to ask.
ladyelenawf7 points1y ago
The reddit hivemind? I see it happen a lot with what turns out to be valid questions.
Kyde_Drakes8 points1y ago
As a shift lead I’m disappointed that others don’t support their baristas. I would have told her to take a hike.
lewabwee3 points1y ago
As a shift supervisor I can say neither my sm or my dm would back me up so I can’t back up my baristas. It’s also hard sometimes when I walk into a situation to understand what’s happening so I usually just give the customer whatever they want. I don’t give a fuck anymore. I get paid the same.
Royal_Concentrate_00 [OP]1 points1y ago
Amen. I don't know why I keep trying to uphold policy. No one else does and tarbux doesn't seem to care.
lewabwee2 points1y ago
Well Starbucks says their policy is one thing but their actions show it’s another. Upholding policy is giving the customer what they want 99% of the time. I’ve seen people getting written up for upholding the stated policy. It’s just not worth it. Starbucks loses money on this not me.
ProfessionalRock79403 points1y ago
As an SSV my fave thing is to shut down assholes lol byyeee
Tiny-Focus49372 points1y ago
But it’s not the SSV’s fault. They might have been avoiding you getting berated by a customer. Sorry they didn’t back you up but maybe they’d rather get the customer out of there instead of creating a bad situation for you.
House-Psychological2 points1y ago
lets be real here: alot of shifts and ssv's will throw their barista's under the bus so to speak and feed into customer entitlement rather than try to do actual conflict resolution. it sucks.
Sunflowerfields171 points1y ago
Bullshit like this is why I quit and went to a local shop. Corporate just let them walk all over us and from what I can tell it’s only getting worse. Starbucks is the embodiment of “the customer is always right” which is a dangerous game to play.
kenb1011 points1y ago
Question from a UK partner,
Is the refill on any drink of any size?
In the UK we only refill pike if it has been consumed on site and only a tall size
Royal_Concentrate_00 [OP]1 points1y ago
I believe they are able to get any size tea, hot coffee, cold brew and iced coffee.
Malba12081 points1y ago
How is someone so bold to do that? I feel bad when I show up before my mobile order is ready and the barista is looking for my drink(s). Please don't move my cup ahead of someone else! I told the baristas yesterday, to not rush my drink.
hellopie71 points1y ago
I'd tell on your shift to your SM lmao.
Royal_Concentrate_00 [OP]2 points1y ago
Oh she's the same. She gave me shit because I didn't have all the coffee brewed when an impatient woman came in and didn't have time to wait on her dark roast.
