DTR/DTO tips? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ellsb3lls
320 here. i’m going to be starting my third week. i was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice for DTR and DTO? i work at a drive-thru which is honestly not in the best location.

my store has a tiny parking lot and often times people go through DT blocking the road. i want to improve my skills so this doesn’t keep happening. i’ve only been on window and expedited orders a few times. any advice would be appreciated <3

• If someone orders something that will take you a moment to find the button for, tell them! It’s totally okay to say something like “Absolutely, you can have (drink/modifier/food/etc.)! Give me one moment to find that button.” It stops customers from listening 3 more things while you’re still trying to find the first button. It takes a lot less time to do than to accidentally get it wrong and then have to redo it.

•Always clarify iced/hot and size for drinks. This reduces the amount of remakes you have to make when customers get to the window.

•Read back orders either after each item or at the end of the order. It decreases order misunderstandings.

•If a customer orders a drink that gets whipped cream with an alternative milk, ask if they would still like the whip.

Yes, all this plus take your time. Corporate does not judge us by how much time they spend ordering. It's the amount of time they spend at the window that is important.

Quick question, for the milks/substitutes, I’m kinda confused on which side to use when they ask for a different milk. When do I use the left side and when do I use the right?
HolmesHommie 28 points 1y ago
The full answer is: If a drink is based on milk (ex:latte, mocha, etc.), use the side that charges the customer. If a drink can be made without milk (ex: americano, iced coffee, etc.), use the side that doesn’t charge the customer.

An easy way to check is: Look at the right side of the screen where the milk “box” is. If the box has something in it (ex: WH, Co, %), it means it is milk based and you should charge the customer. If the milk “box” is empty, it means the drink isn’t milk based and you shouldn’t charge the customer for adding a splash of milk.

Omg that’s such a life saver tip tysm

I will add onto this… if they want more than 3-4 Oz of non dairy in a non milk based drink then we charge for it.

For example: a customer orders a venti ice coffee with extra extra almond milk.
I would charge them, because they are probably wanting more than 4 Oz.

One thing that my store pushes super hard is grabbing peoples food before putting the order through, just saying like “aright give me one second while i go grab/put that food in the oven for you”

oh i see, thanks!

Never be afraid to tell the customer you didn’t hear them or don’t understand. Definitely use the “I’m sorry, I’m still training and looking for the button for that.” They’ll understand and are usually 100x nicer.

On DTO, ask if they’d like any food items first, this gives your food partner time to cook it before they get to the window. This is especially important for paninis and super helpful during peak.

Doing introductions, asking how their day is, or asking a random question of the day can help lengthen the transaction so your bar peeps can catch up.

Clarify everything and repeating the order also helps the DTB partner catch up with drinks or finish the order before you’re done taking it.

For DTR, communicate heavily on what you need. Your next car pulls up and you’re waiting on food, tell DTO. Or have your hands ready to grab a frap from Bar. Our SM has a policy that we pull cars to the front of the store at 45 seconds if we have the next order ready.

There’s soo many little things you can do to help while also staying planted in your position.

The most important thing to remember is…. It’s just coffee! Don’t be too hard on yourself if it doesn’t go right or you don’t get the drive times you want. Your SM, DM, and corporate are the only ones benefiting from drive times, or connections. Good luck and have fun!

Fellow 320 here! Honestly, just feel free to say “one moment please” after everything they say while you find it, and in the end repeat it back to them to make sure it’s right. It’s better to take a little extra time putting the order in right and repeating it back to them with all the inclusions than getting it wrong and having to ask the barista on bar to get the drink remade.

Also, if you feel unsure about the buttons and where to find things, take pictures of the POS screen!!! I did that and I studied the screens at home and it really helped me. Good luck!!

The tips I give my green beans with sequencing both is to greet the person at order with “hi what can I get for you today?” While standing at the window and then give the window person their total. While that person is paying, handing you cash or card and then when you step back to the register and are typing in their pay type you are close enough to the dto screen to start typing. Type in the order and count out change or finish the card transaction. As you’re saying “what else can I get for you?” Step back to the window to hand out items, their change, ask if they would like a receipt or any straws, finish with the car at the window as you’re listening to the order. Prioritize the window person if they have questions, etc and tell the dto to hold for a moment if you get caught up. When the car at the window leaves step back to dto and finish typing their order, giving them a total as the next car pulls up. This takes tons of practice especially with pressing the A button on and off repeatedly as you switch who you’re talking to

thank you! this really helped a lot.

if you need to stall time to get to the register (maybe there wasn’t a line or you had to step aside) ask them about their day.

if they ever need a second to think let them know if they have any questions or need any recommendations to just ask. it can speed up their decision process and you can suggest a drink that’s good that a barista won’t mind making during peak.

if they order smth like a pour over or an iced tea latte then let them know their will be a wait. in my store we let them know they may have to come in to wait if the drink isn’t ready when they reach the window, check w ur manager first before doing that tho.

Always always always take the time to clarify orders, at dtr and dto, this prevents so much wasted time remaking drinks.

As far as being on the window goes — have a couple of grande/venti straws on the windowsill. It cuts down the time of you having to reach for it. Also hand drinks out first, then take payment because sometimes the drinks will just sit there and it’ll take u longer. Also!!! During time where you’re waiting for drinks ask if they want any straws, drink trays, napkins, stoppers, and bags. You cut down time and get them taken care of so they don’t ask u when they’re about to drive off. If you see their card has the “tap” option (it’s like a little volume looking thing) tap!! It’s so much quicker and u can leave it on the card reader, press credit/debit, get the drink, hand it out, and give them the card. And you save so much time doing that. It goes very smoothly.

When I'm on DTO I make sure I repeat the drink back to them as they order it, and then repeat their whole order. Then as DTR, I read back their order before taking payment.
