Give me your best (or worst) mess ups as a green bean newbie to make me feel better about my own ❤️ (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by yoonikosmos
On my first day I

1. Forgot to give someone their card back at the drive thru until they were already gone

2. Didn’t press the “SBUX app/card” button after scanning someones app so the payment wasn’t collected

3. Tried to put $10 on someones gift card after completing their order, accidentally charged it onto the next persons order, was able to clear it from that order but then it took 3 of us to figure out how to save the next customers order to put money onto her card. Eventually ended up having to just memorize the next order, clear it, put the money on the card and then re input the order after she left

For the first month I worked I didn’t realize ices chais *didn’t* get added water. Sorry customers lol
Dessgax08 1 points 1y ago
Wait please explain
TheFriendlyFeminist 2 points 1y ago
Like a hot chai latte gets pumps of chai, hot water, and steamed milk. An iced chai latte is just pumps of chai and cold milk, but when I first started, I added cold water as well, making the drink extra watery probably lol

Story number two:

The second Starbucks location I worked at was in a medical school building. Our garbage was down in the basement, and I wasn’t quite sure where to go but my manager told me “You’ll find it don’t worry, it’s marked!”

So off I go down into the basement of this giant medical building with our grinds to find the garbage... I took a few wrong turns and got lost, and I see someone pushing a gurney, so I ask them for directions to the garbage... at which point I realise the gurney is transporting a cadaver, and now I’m lost in the basement pulling a cart of grinds and hassling a med student transporting a cadaver. I wanted to cry.

It’s been almost 5 years and I still do these things sometimes. You’re doing great!

Buddy, I’ve been there a year now and this kinda of stuff happens still. We all make mistakes. For awhile I was making the matcha green teas with green tea and matcha. Eventually a customer corrected me but it was embarrassing. Another thing I didn’t k ow was that there is vanilla in the vsccb.
devinboyd98 2 points 1y ago
Wait there’s vanilla syrup in the sweet cream cold brews? Not just the vanilla in the sweet cream?!
_abbycadabby_ 5 points 1y ago
Yes! But a different # of pumps, just to keep it exciting. At least it's easy to memorize: 1/2/3/4.

Yes!

Not me but another person working the open shift with me. We had a tiny store in a food court and kept most of our supplies down in the mall basement so it was quite a trek down every time we needed something. We were a super busy store so the general supply run was to load the cart up with as much shit as humanly possibly and bring it up the service elevator in one run to minimise travel time.

My work bestie was a lovely guy but he was pretty small, and he kind of overestimated his cart handling abilities. I can vividly remember seeing him attempting to manoeuvre the cart across the food court, stacked waaaaay too high with supplies, bottles of syrup, milk, you name it, the pile was neatly stacked at least 6ft high. I remember thinking ‘man, how is he doing that?! That’s super impressive!’

He made it back to the store, got the cart behind the bar.... and then it tipped over the tiniest ledge in the world, spilling everything all over us, the bar, the floor, the bar area was just covered in syrup and milk... I remember we all just stood there staring at the mess and not knowing how to react. Like the whole store, just stopped and stared at it, including customers. My buddy went into the back to cry, it was an absolute shit show to clean.

It took me almost two months and hundreds of iced coffees before I realized that the default is to put classic syrup in them
Missjaneausten 2 points 1y ago
Shit. You just made me remember I forgot to put classic in like 6 iced coffees today 😂

Finding out that everyone was saying shit about me not getting the barista certification early. I am you all love me that much:) Its all good. I didn't want them to put me on bar that soon. I know myself well.
olivinemultichrome 7 points 1y ago
I’ve been a barista for three years across four stores and was just now officially certified just because my old stores never got around to it. Despite me being a trainer at two of them.
[deleted] 2 points 1y ago
Lol it can take a while, I honestly don't feel as bad. I am so afraid that speed might get the best of me. My co workers wanna go at speeds that as new green bean aren't humanly possible yet. I just taken what I say and go for it on my own. Every single time I feel like I am on a situation. I do well on floor then to someone else its like I don't at all.
djholls 2 points 1y ago
What is the barista certification?
[deleted] 1 points 1y ago
Talk to your shift about it. Its a test they do to give you on.
djholls 4 points 1y ago
I've never heard of it and I've worked here for almost a year 😹
[deleted] 1 points 1y ago
🙃 I keep on having break downs over it

hi 32****** here! so also really new… i hadn’t made a latte in a second and i went to airrate the milk and the wand wasn’t all the way in and milk went everywhere… also forgot to put scoops in frappachinos for awhile and was just handing out blended milk and not a vanilla bean frap… my bad…
Hoax_Pudding_Cup 6 points 1y ago
Right when I hit the half year mark, I learned that matcha scoops are supposed to be cold bar scoops for lattes. Whoopsie.
_abbycadabby_ 5 points 1y ago
I was winging this for several weeks after I started being put on bar all the time. I think I was using the # of pumps listed on the shaker, maybe? Every time I did a matcha latte I felt guilty because I wasn't sure it was right... Finally we had a slow open one day and I grabbed the iPad to check the recipe cards. Phew!
official_koda_ 5 points 1y ago
I did number one and two more times than I can count. Even after working there for a long time you’ll still make mistakes like these, it’s just part of the job.
erizodelmar 4 points 1y ago
Oh boy.

I once was doing dishes and opened a whipped cream without emptying it and it exploded all over me.

One time I threw a bunch of trash in the dirty towel bin because it was empty and I thought it was for garbage.

My first time doing a trash run I set off the alarm because I didn’t know I needed keys, then forgot that the door locked so I locked myself out of the store and had to walk around to come in through the front.

I’ve left the lid off of the blender a couple times, and accidentally blended foam on 1 for a similar result.

Made a ton of drinks wrong — forgot to put vanilla in the VSCCB and caramel macchiatos. Forgot to put caramel in the salted caramel cold brew. Forgot to make drinks decaf/blonde. Didn’t know water was supposed to go in chai lattes.

Wasn’t whisking the sweet cream for the first few months.

Messed up a TON on DTR. Couldn’t figure out gift cards, forgot to grab change, accidentally paid someone out who hadn’t actually paid and was too scared to tell a supervisor so I voided a similarly priced order.

I’m sure there’s more.
SeaworthinessGold846 4 points 1y ago
I filled the regular espresso hopper with decaf beans right before peak started😅
ImpressiveVariation0 4 points 1y ago
We were still writing on cups and I misread a passion tango and thought it was only peach juice oops

I might argue this was a combo of me being tired and new but during an open I made a cappuccino and forgot to put espresso shots in

Went to put ice into an iced coffee directly over the ice bin, spilled a bunch into the bin, ended up having to empty out the whole thing so we could clean it and refill it

(i’m still fairly new, 301****, but:)

- handed out the wrong order in drive like 3 times in 30 mins… a week after doing the same thing and expressing to my shift how vigilant i was gonna be in the future <3

- first time on bar (it was an open so i was alone there): forgot the espresso in a mocha. next mocha, forgot the mocha sauce. made 2 caramel macchiatos without vanilla in a row, then had an epiphany and remembered…only to forget the caramel drizzle on the next one

- somebody had a really large order in the middle of peak when i was on register/warming/in charge of brewing, and i forgot to get the brewed coffee they had ordered amongst all the bar drinks. it took 20 mins before i realized he was still there and immediately panicked.
dirtyydre 2 points 1y ago
First time ever touching the whips. I pulled the handle too hard when putting whip on a hot mocha and shot it everywhere all over myself and the other trainees. Also a month in I got comfy shaking drinks with one hand and ended up getting baptized by a pink drink.
MajorIsland3 2 points 1y ago
Made a dccf from memory and was so proud. Turned around when the blender was done and realized I forgot the lid 🤦🏻‍♀️
slimelore 1 points 1y ago
tried to drain coffee cube of old pike… dropped it in the sink and shattered the glass bit on the front and got glass inside??? The coffee pot??? idk how the fuck. and I used to make whips with half and half… whoops
