Shoe question! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by cloudwispy
I am waiting on a call to see if I will get an interview soon, so I’m already (wishfully) keeping dress code in mind when I buy new things. I bought a pair of Mary Jane docs yesterday and I’m really excited about them, but would they be allowed? They’re black, matte, pretty sure they’re nonslip, but because they’re Mary Janes they do have those holes by the buckles. Obviously I’d wear thick socks with them but still wasn’t sure if I could wear them for work if I am lucky enough to get the job. Thanks for your help!

I think it just kinda depends how chill your SM and SSV’s are in regards to the holes. In general though docs are great for working at sbux other then the fact that they kinda get destroyed. So if you don’t mind getting milk splattered on them 24/7 I think that they are great.

Thank you! And they’re not like, ripped holes, they’re the gaps by the buckles but I wasn’t sure haha

Update I literally saw one of my coworkers wearing Mary Jane docs today… I think you are good!

I’d leave the Mary Janes for the off day rotation, wear them for the first few days but I always recommend Made for Makers vans or 1461 Docs. Good luck on your interviews!

Shoes have to cover the top of your foot, so likely no.
When selecting shoes for work, think to yourself, “How well would these shoes protect me if I spill scalding water or hot grease on my foot?”
buubuubitch 9 points 1y ago
I have the same shoes and they’re tough to break in, so I wouldn’t wear them brand new at the very least. Also, many spills occur and could very well reach into the decorative holes near the toe and/or the buckle area. If I’m being completely honest, I think they’d get ruined- but I also work at an extremely busy location. Almost all of my partners and I wear old, non-slip shoes that we don’t mind getting destroyed for work. It’s all relative to your store :)

Thank you! They’re second hand so I’m not sure how stuff they’ll be, but that’s great advice!
buubuubitch 2 points 1y ago
Of course! Happy to help!

Don’t wear anything you aren’t comfortable with getting covered in milk, coffee, syrup, or if you’re doing drains, bleach. I had days after happy hours where I’d get home and feel like I was peeling off a second layer of skin from my arms with how much crap I had to wash off.

Advice my manager gave me: "Will you be ok if you drop burning coffee on your shoes?" I have some sketchers faux leather boots that work great if you need a good pair of work shoes I can post the link.

Your socks will get soaked. But they would be good to wear to the interview!

I wore / still do wear my doc mary janes everyday when i worked at starbucks! they’re my fave!! sometimes they do get a bit slippery if you walk to fast on obviously wet floors. i think they sell a non slip version if the store is a bit more strict. other than that highly recommend them and they go with every outfit!

It should be fine! But just warning you if they’re the vegan leather the refrigerators with scratch the crap out of them. I wore my docs and have big brown scrapes on them from how low to the ground everything is!

I wear my Mary Jane docs to work! However mine are super old so I'm okay with getting them dirty (which they will get dirty!!)

since your docs are new I really don't recommend wearing them to work. Especially since they need time to break in and you don't want them to get filthy

I wear 8’ wedge sole work boots from Georgia boot. I wore them when I was an ironworker, I wear them at my primary job, and at starbucks.

They will probably be fine but just keep in mind that whatever shoes you wear and however careful you may be you will definitely spill scalding hot water and coffee on your shoes and apron
enlighTAYment 1 points 1y ago
I spill stuff on my shoes every single day, so just be prepared for that.

Those are the exact shoes I wear! My SM is totally chill with them but it depends on your store. They clean super easy and once you break them in they’re super comfy at least to me.
cloudwispy [OP] 2 points 1y ago
That’s awesome! I wanted something safe and efficient but also unique to me, I can’t wait until they arrive and I really hope they are okay with it 😅

Redback boots! Super comfortable and really great quality for a decent price ($165), only downside is that you can only buy them online in the states, but some stores do carry them. Clean really easily as well (I’ll sometimes take a wet wipe and wipe them down after a particularly messy day).

They're probably fine. Shoes are the last thing people look at as long as they're not like neon pink.

I wear Clarks a lot, they're comfy and look professional enough.
