I don’t know what to think about this situation with my SM.. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Desperate-Ad1835
I’ve been at Starbucks for 3 months- I have another job where I work 30 hrs/week and was hired at Starbucks to work 20-25 a week. Anyhow, my SM knows how many hours I work between both jobs but still sends me texts at least 3 times a week asking if I can cover this and that extra shift.
Well, yesterday, I overslept (first time!) and was 2 hours late. I of course profusely apologized it The shift at that time said absolutely no big deal. But anyhow, I get a text today from my SM asking, as usual, if I can cover a shift Thursday. And when I said no, she brought up the fact I was late yesterday and basically said I owed her for that- the not so subtle feeling being that I’d better cover the shift or else.
Isn’t this wrong?

This is definitely wrong! Everyone makes mistakes, I've slept past a shift too! Don't feel like you have to go in for those shifts to "make-up" for it. 100% screenshot those texts and if you feel intimidated by your SM again speak to HR for sure

Reciprocate what you receive. You don’t owe her anything aside from the hours you agreed to work and availability hours. Work the hours you are supposed to, nothing more. If you can’t cover a shift for someone, and she uses that against you, you could get her fired for trying to blackmail you for your job position.

Mistakes happen! Starbucks doesn’t own you. Talk to HR or your DM, that’s a really inappropriate text from your SM. I’m an older partner(211****) and I’ve helped get a manager fired over mistreatment of his team and harassment- one thing I’ve learned is you HAVE to be your own advocate. If you let them treat you poorly, they’ll keep doing it. It may seem small but having this documented can only help you in the future. Good luck!
