Do the old Espresso machines do half caff?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by GerbilFeces
I’m a 28x partner and I’ve always worked with the new machines. I just went by a store I’ve never been to that uses the old machines, thermoplan masternas, and ordered a grande half caff latte with an extra shot and they told me that I had to choose either 1/3 or 2/3 caff instead. Is this a thing? I didn’t know lol
heartsblade73 points1y ago
yeah what they said is correct 😭 the only option the old machines have for half caff is 2 or 4 shots. its because of how the machine HAS to split it evenly in two shots. source, i have only ever used the old machines lol
MajorIsland312 points1y ago
It is possible to make a triple grande half caff by queuing 2 half caff doubles and only taking one side of the second set if that makes sense.
Sparkflyr6 points1y ago
That's what I was about to say. I used to work with the old ones at my previous location and did this all the time.

Ahhh tyty lol
vulgar_witch8 points1y ago
Yeah I don't even know what the new machines look like 😂
heartsblade14 points1y ago
i’ve seen them in other stores and i am v jealous 🥲 they can do an odd number of ristretto shots too
edit: meaning without having to miss a shot. lol.

Salty about this, we were supposed to have gotten a closed sister store’s newer models, now no one knows where they are
Biggyboysmalls12 points1y ago
That’s because a grande with an extra shot is three shots
GerbilFeces [OP]14 points1y ago
I know it’s three, but the new machines can do half caff on odd amounts of shots
greeneyedstarqueen1 points1y ago
The old machines pull half calf’s inch twos or fours.
vulgar_witch6 points1y ago
You don't sound fun to work with, gonna be honest here.
bubblegumm0026 points1y ago
have you ever used the newer mastrena 2's? they can pull 3 half decaf shots. it's only the older machines that cannot

Lol you’re crazy. The new machines do half caff on 3 shots. Nobody is moving anything or catching any shots or doing any math, it works just fine.

It is most certainly is possible. You just have to que 2 sets of half caff and only capture half of the second set. To anyone who disagrees I would like to know how you make grande flat whites on the old machines 😝
drinkliquidclocks8 points1y ago
They're just lazy they could have split up single shots in half for you lol
imaraisin8 points1y ago
I am so confused. Why don’t they just pull one normal, one decaf, and then a double half-decaf and catch half of that?
Or we could do 4 halfs in two pulls and toss one of the two on the second pull.
It sounds like fractions were not realized. It’s like 2% with 2% milk doesn’t make 4% milk.
Edit: I get some of the concerns like the splitter doesn’t work properly, etc. unfortunately, most of the time, I am not paid to fix the problem, nor will I fix it.
RadioGaga3863 points1y ago
I think the old verismo 501 machines could do 1/3 or 2/3 decaf, but it’s been a loooong time since I used one so I could be wrong
rudebii3 points1y ago
I didn’t work on the Mastranas (they rolled them out shortly after I left) but on the old old marz shots were hand dosed, so you could do half-calf off the same head whether it’s one or two shots.
Shorts and longs were possible too, since they were semi-auto machines.
symanthafox1 points1y ago
Yes
Humble-Comparison1901 points1y ago
my store has the old machines w half caf..... even if they didn’t you can always catch half a decaf then catch half a full caf.....
Signifikantotter1 points1y ago
I remember the day our store upgraded from the Verismo 801s and moved to the masternas. Wonder what the new machines are like
kIose1 points1y ago
Not correct, I've worked with these machines for almost 7 years now. They'd just have to pull 4 1/2 caf shots and discard the 4th. On the old machines we were actually trained to only pull even number of shots as well as it messes with the machine calibration, although not every store follows this procedure. Still, it just sounds like they don't know what they're doing.
ZombiePomeranian3 points1y ago
You are RIGHT! I’ve worked on those machines for 7 years too come October!
kIose1 points1y ago
Nice, what are you a very early 20-----?

kIose1 points1y ago
Nice 207 here
Diamondilium2 points1y ago
You shouldn't be downvoted. You are right. I have been with starbucks for 8 years
bitchconpanna6 points1y ago
It’s embarrassing that the people that are right are being downvoted. 17…. here and yes you can do odd half calf. How do these partners make flat whites on old mastrenas????
kIose4 points1y ago
With their rationale you shouldn't be able to do a tall 1/2 caf latte. Makes no sense.
imaraisin2 points1y ago
Like I said in the comment, some people just don’t do fractions.
Mayachees-1 points1y ago
This is not true. I have worked with both machines. I worked with the old one for 3 1/2 years. The old ones you can only do 2 shots half caf. So if you do another two and split it, the ratio Could be off. Always inform the customer of this!!
kIose3 points1y ago
How is that off? You pull 2 half caf then put them in the beverage, another 2 half calf using 2 shot glasses and discard one of those shots.
Mayachees3 points1y ago
Because you can’t always guarantee that the shots will pull evenly between two shot glasses. I don’t know how many times shots are only coming out of one drip slot. And it would be perfectly calibrated.
MajorIsland32 points1y ago
I’ve seen what your talking about and it’s because the black piece that separates the 2 shots is either clogged or not assembled correctly. There are screws that can be tightened or loosened to allow espresso to come out.
kIose0 points1y ago
Pretty sure you can. Just measure out the difference between both shot glasses if one has more. The liquid should be of the same concentration of regular espresso and decaf.
Also with your rationale how would you make a tall half caf latte? Makes no sense what you all are saying.
