Its a haCk I lEurnD oN tIktaK (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by BusyLeek2351
Don’t come to my store asking for a trenta drink, no ice, 3 cups of ice, and 4 straws.

It will only be filled to the third line.
I probably won’t even shake it
I don’t care about the hack that is just basic physics/common sense.

You still payed $6 for white grape juice and food coloring.

Please leave.

I thought new policy was if they ask for no ice & ice on The side, you gave them one tall cup of ice, that's it.
philosopher_cat_lady 25 points 1y ago
It's a 20-ounce cup without a logo
NotyourangeLbabe 27 points 1y ago
You guys still have those? We got them in one order and then never again
philosopher_cat_lady 2 points 1y ago
We had one box, ran out. My manager said she would order some more
mrhammerant 1 points 1y ago
Same. Michael is that you? Lol
NotyourangeLbabe 1 points 1y ago
No, this is Patrick
pythotgoras 69 points 1y ago
i really dont understand this attitude. assuming that filling the cup to the third line only isn't an actual standard, it's really petty. we as employees do not make any less money when people ask for less/no ice. who cares if customers get a little bit more for their money? starbucks is a corporation and their profit margins are insane, i promise you they don't care, or they would have made it a standard by now. if the customer is civil about it, i really don't see how this would be an issue.
AmbitiousCriticism 25 points 1y ago
I mean, former barista here, but if it happens enough, it can really fuck up your orders. Using so much more of an ingredient than would be expected and not having a way to charge/ account for it.
lewabwee 11 points 1y ago
Yeah but who cares? We run out we run out. If inventory is fucked then it’s fucked. That’s clearly corporate’s attitude. At least for the time being I don’t have to go find anything.
AmbitiousCriticism 3 points 1y ago
I hear ya, I just always hated taking shit for something so stupid like that.
pythotgoras 7 points 1y ago
someone in this thread suggested adding extra base as a potential solution to that. but even then, i don't see how getting annoyed at customers is the right way to go about this? they don't know/can't fix our inventory issues. if this is to be fixed, it should be through a standard. but while it's allowed, i don't get how it's an issue.
lunarena11 3 points 1y ago
Yeap, unfortunately most here don't understand how labor works. Yes we are helping the evil corporate save money but all of that accounts to their algorithm of our labor.

What happens after the leads count inventory and we went over the budgeted amount for waste? That's right our forecasted hours of labor goes down because it says we are losing money.

So saving corporate money is gaining us hours/labor (means the ability to have more people working so we aren't stressed), but no one likes to look at it that way. It's easier to complain about its just a job and we don't get paid enough to care.
keithct6 11 points 1y ago
my SM has us punch in extra everything when we do light or no ice. so for example mango dragonfruit lemonade with light ice = also punch extra base, extra lemonade
pythotgoras 7 points 1y ago
that makes sense, yeah!
zlafrance 3 points 1y ago
You’re exactly right. What difference does it make to you and I? Our job is to make sure our customers have a good experience at our store so long as their requests don’t go against our quality and safety standards. If you’re getting worked up about silly customer requests you’re caring too much, but about the wrong things.
Torminatorii 3 points 1y ago
I mean yeah, it doesn’t affect us in any way, especially if they’re not being shitty about their order, most certainly doesn’t affect us monetarily. However, when we *weren’t* experiencing massive shortages and people would come in and ask for stuff like this it would use almost entire boxes of base or entire gallons of milk etc etc. It caused us to be low for almost the rest of the week, sometimes more, because we didn’t have the stock to allow people to just…have all of this stuff. I don’t mind when people ask for extra: less ice, more milk, no water, whatever, but when people go to extremes it can mess with the stock and ordering process which is just a massive headache and stress for the people working, not for corporate.
kaleiydo 4 points 1y ago
yeah it’s when we have 2 boxes left of a base and someone pulls up asking for trenta no water no ice and then a cup of ice on the side with 10 backed up mobile orders and a line around the store, and then people waiting get mad that we don’t have it
pythotgoras 2 points 1y ago
again though, not their fault. they are allowed to order it. we can't blame them for how low stocked we are, the product is going to get sold anyway, regardless of who it's sold to.
lullabam 65 points 1y ago
I had this mentality when I first started at Sbux but with time and a lot of work related erosion I stopped caring this much. They said to make the moment right so. it isn’t worth caring about, they could give a shit about their employees so I could give a shit about what they “lose” which. is nothing. 🤷‍♀️
IfuDidntCome2Party 2 points 1y ago
I went through those same feelings. Stressing out trying to protect every penny. But then watch everyone giving away recover cards, etc. One day we wake up and find out it is better to just do what Corp said, than stress out and wear out. Corp is sitting in their office not stressing about it, nor should you is my mantra.
lullabam 1 points 1y ago
Huh?
BusyLeek2351 [OP] 0 points 1y ago
I don’t have the mentality of “saving company money” I’m annoyed by the influx of people who don’t understand how ice works all of a sudden and want to watch the world burn
philosopher_cat_lady 49 points 1y ago
I could care less if they're scamming Starbucks. I just follow the rules Starbucks lays out. Starbucks obviously doesn't care that they're getting scammed, as no ice means extra beverage at no upcharge.
[deleted] 43 points 1y ago
Hi, yes. We really need to enforce the third line to stop this stupid bullshit.
BabySteele 36 points 1y ago
Is this in a weekly update I havent read yet?
philosopher_cat_lady 13 points 1y ago
No, they're just being facetious
Vivalaqueens 32 points 1y ago
If someone orders a 30 oz beverage then they get 30 oz of the beverage regardless of ice or no ice.
RetroNotRetro 1 points 1y ago
If you include ice, they no longer have 30oz of beverage, they have ~24oz of beverage and a bunch of ice
Vivalaqueens 2 points 1y ago
...And if that ice were to melt they would have 30 oz of liquid. You get a full cup of whatever cup size you order is the point.
julieCivil 15 points 1y ago
Never understood baristas who try to save Starbucks money. Like why?
BusyLeek2351 [OP] 6 points 1y ago
It’s not about saving money it’s the sheer stupidity and entitlement people deal with
snowpeech 1 points 1y ago
I don't think it's entitlement if it's allowed 🤷🏻‍♀️ customers being sassy or giving attitude is a different story
0x52and1x52 13 points 1y ago
Standard is to fill the cup to 6mm below the rim even if it is no ice.

Why do you care so much what these teens do anyways? Ring it up properly and Starbucks will change the policy if it affecting inventory too much. You're just creating a problem for no reason.
coffeebartenderr 3 points 1y ago
honestly, give them the drink with no ice. once it costs starbucks enough they’ll implement rules to change it or upcharge until then were getting paid the same either way. i think if it more as an F U to starbs cause truly, they’re the one losing money 😏
Assiqtaq 3 points 1y ago
We have a lady who comes in several times a week and gets 3 venti matcha green tea lattes with soy milk who tries to argue with we about charging for the soy. Lady, I don't care you think its a scam. I actually agree with you, I think they shouldn't be charging for that either. But they tell me to charge you, so I'm gonna charge you, and if you don't like it PLEASE call corporate and tell THEM! I personally don't care, it isn't like I'm making extra money from charging you.
RetroNotRetro 2 points 1y ago
The local coffee shop I work at charges 40 cents for non-dairy milk, but mainly because we have four employees, including the two owners who pay for the milk pretty much out of pocket, and non-dairy milk is expensive. Sometimes I buy it for them as well
Assiqtaq 2 points 1y ago
I agree with it for small coffee shops, which probably makes me sound dumb. Probably as much for the fact that small coffee shops would have to give in if SB started not charging. But my thought is SB makes bank. They could easily just absorb that cost without blinking. But they won't, because they'd be giving up extra money people are willingly paying them. Who cares that it would actually streamline many things.
cascadebabe 2 points 1y ago
I remember 2 summers ago they sent out a weekly update that said when they ask for light ice- no ice that the system marks out that extra inventory. In my old district it even automatically raised the price!

Also the argument that it’s “not fair” to the other customers when there’s product shortages doesn’t make sense to me. We get paid to make drinks and be nice we don’t get paid to worry about supply chain and the morality of consumption.

To anyone upset by a teenager asking for no ice: I can promise you that nobody has ever died, ever, not once, because they didn’t get their favorite sugar drink from Starbucks.
abp14c 2 points 1y ago
Posts like this make me so thankful I work at a store in a hotel, where we have to charge for all water and ice cups 😬
xenfoes 1 points 1y ago
Standard is to fill to the top with almost all drinks that are no ice.
Efficient_Dark6855 1 points 1y ago
LMAO
_thekraken 1 points 1y ago
I actually had no idea we were supposed to only fill up to the third line. That's good to know
drinkliquidclocks 37 points 1y ago
That's not a rule, afaik the standard is to fill the cup. I could be wrong but that's my stores rule. It's just petty not to...
TheOnesLeftBehind 11 points 1y ago
You need to ring extra base as well for inventory to see it being used
0x52and1x52 20 points 1y ago
This post is wrong. Standard is ~6mm below the rim, NOT to the third line. This topic was covered in the Spring 2021 training.
snowpeech 1 points 1y ago
Also, 6mm??? When did we start using the metric system? Lol
0x52and1x52 1 points 1y ago
We’ve always used both metric and imperial since Canada & the US share many standards and beverage components. I prefer to use metric because it’s easier to visualize.
