How to deal with bad vibes at work? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by tropinana23
Today I had a somewhat stressful day at work. I am a new partner (working for two monthe now) and came in today to a mess. There were only 4 people on the floor, including me, and two were scheduled to leave. The vibes were literally horrendous.

They put me on solo DTO/DTR and it's not really my strong suit in the first place. I was rehelping a customer who had an issue with her mobile order, which didnt print and she was really rude and there was a car waiting at DTO for a really long time but I didn't notice. I was really shaken up and a shift got mad? at me wondering what I was doing and said It a somewhat rude tone and all I could say was that I was helping another barista. The shift ignored me the rest of her time there and walked out early

Everyone seemed really stressed out so I tried not to take it personally but of course, it still kinda affected me.

I'm doing a lot as a fairly new partner since this store has many issues and a manager who frequently understaffs the night shift and we are losing baristas weekly, no one really has a positive attiurde and the vibes are really negative here.

How can I keep a positive attitude or at least let it not have that much of an influence on me?

Also wanted to add that it can be somewhat upsetting at my store they talk shit behind peoples backs a lot and also can refer to partners as "strong" and "weak" and theres a lot of favoritism so it can get really toxic

Same at my store and I'm not referred to as a strong one unfortunately...but the shift that called me weak gives me so much anxiety and I always mess up right in front of them...

YESS I just get nervous around them and make a lot of mistakes. I feel like I just hsve issues with authority in the first place 😭😭 so it makes it more difficult

It feels like I can't do anything correctly or make them happy in any way and they'd rather just be rid of me...the way they're like "unassign and clock out, bye." As early as possible makes me feel horrible like they can't wait till I'm gone and not fucking up their shift anymore...I dread working those days...

sorry you had a rough day buddy. I understand that it was a stressful day, but there really isnt any excuse for shifts to be abusive. If it happens often, you should approach your sm. That being said, and i hate to say it, but bad vibes are just part of the job right now, especially when there arent a ton of partners on the floor. Its easy for things to go wrong when we're understaffed, and its easy to feel like you dont have any allies if one person becomes upset with you. I really wish there was an answer within our control to rectify situations like this, but ultimately, these kinds of issues are fixed with more macro-esque plays, if you know what i mean. I wish there was something we ourselves could do to deal with the overarching situation, but it honestly doesnt feel like there is. I try to make plans for after work alot, even if its over little things. I hype up that bag of chips waiting for me at home ive never tried. I ask my girlfriend if shes gonna be free to talk on the phone when im out, I text my friends and ask them if they wanna play games online when im home. I just try and stay excited for something.

You're doing very well to function as the solo DTO/DTR and in addition help a mobile customer. You were probably warming food for the window too. The shift was really remiss to take it out on you, the partner who showed up to work. Realize that they are lucky to have you, there is a really active job market right now. If they are decent, they will realize that they were not fair to you and feel some shame. Every shift is a new chance for everyone, including the shift who was having a bad night that night.

The vibes being off is *not* your responsibility. That's on your shift lead. They set the tone for the floor. Being understaffed and busy is **not** an excuse for everything to feel like shit on the floor. Sometimes wait times go up, nbd; just be excellent to your customers.

How to deal with it? Don't lose your sense of humor. However, don't make jokes at the expense of customers/other partners/your SM/your SSV. This will only contribute to the toxic environment. Sing and dance around, no one cares if you're good or not. It's fun and it lightens the mood. Lastly, I know it's cliche and some people don't like hearing it; don't forget to smile. Even if you're wearing a mask. Customers can see it in your eyes and hear it in your voice.
