A Real Life interaction I just had (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by DirigibleUme
It's busy, technically after peak but the busiest rush of the day. I'm on bar basically by myself, cs is trying to get to me but I'm also constantly running out of things.

A customer with hot coffees and rtd food is at the hand off, waiting for milk on the side, like they asked for, and a tray, and a bag. Acts confused when they're handed the milk cups, then proceeds to fix their coffee at the hand off, not the condiment stand, and is making a mess tbh. As they're finishing up, cs person asks
"are you all set sweetie? Need anything else?"
Customer: "*sigh* noo.... I'm fine"
CS: "you sure?"
Customer: "yes, it's just a little STRESSFUL in here..."
While pulling a face of disgust,
And leaves.

Woah, I had NO IDEA that it was chaotic in a coffee shop at mid-day, with 3 people on, and a constant line of 10+ people! I, the human octopus juggling 4 Uber deliveries, 3 mobile fraps, and a custom drink the length of my had, thought this scene was the definition of serene! /s

I....have no words. I was so incensed by this, probably disproportionately so, I just can't deal with people anymore.

Edit for typo :(

It honestly IS stressful in Starbucks, and it's a feedback loop between customers with unrealistic expectations, management putting pressure to meet those unrealistic expectations, and stressed out baristas just doing their best. I recently went to a local coffee shop with a line out the door and was really struck by how NOT stressful it was. The customers in line understood that it was busy and would take some time and were cool with it, and so the baristas were able to focus on quality and didn't have to run around like chickens with their heads cut off.

We have a culture problem at Starbucks, and it IS stressful. It's just not the fault of the baristas.
