Airport Starbucks vs. Corporate (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by hopkinsdafox
Former partner here (204xxxx). I decided to go back to starbucks because finding a job is hard but starbucks is something I know. I’m set to work at the airport bux through HMS Host, but I’m wondering if it’s the best decision.

Basically it pays $15 an hour vs. $11/12 whatever it is here. I know the benefits are different, but was wondering if anything else is and if it’s worth it?

I couldn’t find anything on here or other subs.

I was also worried that even though I was a partner for 5 1/2 years, I wouldn’t be able to get a higher pay than a green bean so I went the $15 route.

I would see about checking what the benefits are for the company that owns that Starbucks since it’s licensed. It’s hard to say when it varies based on which company owns the licensed Imo. They could be 15 with equally nice benefits or 15 with nada.

They have good benefits. There’s medical, dental, vision insurance, free/discounted meals during shift, free parking or train pass, vacation/holiday pay.

I think it sounds good then!!! You can’t use partner numbers everywhere else but that’s hardly a big deal IMO in exchange for more money and decent benefits.

I noticed you said free parking and free train passes. I don’t know which airport you’re going to be working at but my mother worked at an airport for many years and while they had free parking, it was a 10 minute, uncovered walk to the terminal entrance. In the summer she’d be dripping sweat, she’d get soaked with rain and she fell and injured herself on ice in the winter. The closest airport to me is hard to access from even the interstate exit, as it was built outside city limits. While the extra cash and benefits will be great, remember how much extra your commute may be

Wow, good point. I thought about the commute, it’s 20 min for me on the freeway - but I kept thinking about weather.

I didn’t think about the time between parking and going in the actual airport. We find out more about parking tomorrow so I’ll consider that as well.

Worked both Corp. & hms host.
Hms host is unionized ( the San Diego airport at least) and you had to bid for your shifts every few months. So being the newest employee I got bottom pick of shifts. These would be your constant shifts for that 6 months. Didn’t care for that. We got a daily allotment of money $20 I think to use on breaks. Background check was lengthy bc of tsa and such. If you work past the gates you have to have get checked every shift. I worked pre gate so I had extra time to get ready. Parking is free but you have to park a ways back and shuttle in to the terminal you’re at everyday. So just getting to work then getting to your area was extra time to adjust for. I did love the bustle of the airport and meeting new travelers everyday.
Corp. you have the insurance, the mark outs but I didn’t like drive through. I also had bad partners in the Corp. so I didn’t like that area as much.

Thank you so much for the details! So whatever your schedule was it was set for 6 months? What do you mean by bid?

Which one did you prefer working for out of the two?

I never worked at HMS but by bid means you apply for the schedule and unless someone more senior compare to you wants it, you get it.

Thank you

Yes, like mentioned, during the bid time we all were given a list of available shifts. Each shift was a weekly layout of your days/times on and your days off. I was told to pick my top 5 but was also told since I was less senior to everyone else in the hms host-Starbucks group I’d most likely not get any of my top picks.
I was then told to come at x time for my bid. And people who were more senior got earlier times. The bid, I think, was every 6 months but I’m not 100% positive.

Looking back at both I enjoyed the airport, even with the union, because of the atmosphere. Also customers were in and out most of the time. Highly unlikely for them to be too upset and in 20 minutes or so you never see them again! But you get to meet some interesting people traveling.
And bonus if you don’t like the Starbucks, you can always apply to go to another airport store. One girl I trained with started at Starbucks but went to waitressing at one of the restaurants in the airport. Her logic was tips from people grabbing a quick drink was easy cash.
