I’m a 231 and after years with the siren it was hard to leave and find something that I felt applied to my skill set. However the truth is that the skills you’ve acquired working at sbux are things many employers really want. Multi-tasking, intense attention to detail, problem solving. All really awesome and transferable. I got a job as an underwriters assistant for insurance. It’s no where near the same as the fast food grind, but my skills still apply. You don’t have to limit yourself to just another service job (unless that’s what you want).

Ideally I would love to get out of the service industry but it seems like such a big jump from anything I’ve ever done 😅

Honestly, I started asking big fish customers for advice or open positions. They know you and it’s an easy foot in the door! Just be confident in yourself and your acquired skills and employers see that. You might face a lot of rejection for lack of applied experience (I sure did). But someone out there is willing to see the potential you have because of your sbux experience.

Asking “just heading to work today?” can lead to them saying “yeah I’m in so and so field” and honestly from there you can straight up say “what advice do you have for someone interested in that field” I’ve done that a couple times and it’s worked pretty well at getting my foot in the door for their fields

Customer interactions also help if you provide excellent service and someone who comes through is hiring
mylifeasmickey3 points1y ago
I basically pitched myself to several people who I knew were the manager or owner of their business and they all agreed to hire me lol. Customer connections go a LONG way

I'm a 248, I left for an a job at a eye clinic. I do glasses sales now. M-F 9-5. Paid holidays off. I make more hourly, and I make commission, which is more then I was making in tips.

You have more options than you think. There’s lots of lower level admin positions open right now if you want to get out of food service, and it doesn’t take much to spin your Starbucks skills to show you’d be good at administrative work.
If you wanna stay in food service — I’ve worked at independent coffee shops and at bars in addition to the bux. Coffee shops are in general more chill than bars, but bartenders make better money. If going into bartending just bear in mind that you’re going to be a barback for a while, which can be frustrating if you’re coming from a Starbucks environment tbh, but again, if you work at the right place you can make a shitton of money doing it.
Here’s the bottom line — your skills from Starbucks are much more marketable than you think they are. Don’t settle for shitty food service and retail jobs that aren’t any better than Starbucks. Make a profile on indeed and just blitz out applications to anything you are even REMOTELY qualified for. Like, apply to literally every single thing you think you could do. It’s easy on indeed bcs you can save your resume and apply for jobs very quickly.
And I’m not kidding, EVERYTHING you even MIGHT be remotely qualified for. If they’re asking for something you don’t have but you have other skills they want, apply anyway. Even the “required” skills can be flexible. My current job “required” admin experience and I had none and still got it. My girlfriends current job “required” a masters degree and she got the job despite only having a bachelors. Approach it with confidence. Like. A borderline absurd amount of confidence. Stretch the truth. Learn how to spin your skills so they can apply to other things. Lie. Lie your ass off (unless it’s, like, something that requires a PhD and you don’t know shit about it). Go into it like you’re perfectly qualified even if you don’t exactly match the description. We’re living in a capitalist hellscape and the game of finding and working good jobs is rigged. They’re not playing by the rules, so why should you? Go forth and fuck it up.

I just got a job as an admin assistant at a small women owned business in my city. They liked the skills I showed here like communication, attention to detail, and flexibility

I’m (246****) on my way out though still struggling with the decision. I’ll be moving into a management position at a local coffee shop that I’ve been with for a while. No benefits or stocks so I’m a li’l scared tbh, but it was time.

I’ve bartended for 20 years and have been with Starbucks for 2 years. I can honestly say that in those 2 years I’ve dealt with more shit from customers at Starbucks than in my years bartending.

I had inventory experience from a previous job and Starbucks, so I got an inventory specialist position for a music company. Family and woman owned- SUCH a different feel from all of my services jobs that are big corporations, not running around doing 4 people's jobs. Also got to pick how to worj my 40 hours, am paid more starting out than as a supervisor for 4 years at Starbucks and everyone at work is happy. It may seem so hard to leave something and start over, but it was definitely worth it for me!

A couple gals that left my store left to be servers. There’s so much high intensity multitasking and customer facing things u have to do that usually u will be excellent in a restaurant. They both make ~ $30 / hr just in tips. I left to do merchandising in retail. I needed a 5am job so it fits perfectly. I don’t have to deal with ppl and I just get to make the store look pretty :) best of luck!

That seems like a potential downgrade if you’re talking about the parks?

Definitely not I just thought Disney employees were paid like shit and had higher expectations placed on them. Enjoy that cool money.

I left for a university dining hall. State benefits and loads of PTO plus access to campus amenities.

I’m 282 too! After Starbucks I’m never doing any kind of food service job again

I’m giving another shot at professional photography and working from home with an education company. Very lucky with that second one.
