I like my job for the most part. I don't think it's amazing or anything and I could give a fuck about corporate shit, but...for the most part I like my "service" job, the people I work with, and I want my customers to be as happy as possible...generally speaking.
(That being said the petty side of me is strong and if you are rude to me I will go out of my way to make sure I hand you a paper straw even if I have plastic on hand).
Anyways though, I know a lot of people that don't swirl shit, especially sugar in coffee and I just don't fucking get it. Some of them don't even swirl for customers that are awesome regulars and I don't understand why. I'll take an extra 2 seconds to make sure I hand out a drink that I would want to drink. How many of y'all making coffee at home put sugar in the bottom, pour your coffee and drink it up. Bullshit. You know you take a spoon and stir that shit in. Same concept with swirling in sugars, syrups or sauces.
Please tell me why you guys are being a bit douche-y? lol!

The barista swirl is my weird flex. I do it all the time. Even outside of work
olivinemultichrome45 points1y ago
I caught myself swirling the cup of juice I poured myself. No ice or anything. Just reflex.
i_am_me4719 points1y ago
i keep swirling my cans of carbonated water- like what
fourcatsandarobot11 points1y ago
I still do it when I’m making coffee for myself at home to the point where my girlfriend started doing it too
charley-bananas83 points1y ago
I’ve gotten so used to swirling cups that I’ve been swirling black coffee lately. Don’t know why some partners act like it’s ppl asking for coffee is somehow not part of their job
francescugh53 points1y ago
even swirling the shots in w the mocha/white mocha before adding the milk…. i just imagine how i’d feel if i get to the end of my drink and its just all syrup.. it takes 2 seconds
kortette13 points1y ago
Lol. At the job I had before Starbucks, the only other “barista” (who had near zero training) would prep mochas by putting sauce, THEN MILK AND ICE, then the shots when they were done pulling.
Every time I could, I’d take those and throw them away and make another one myself, and he WOULDNT stop doing it.
yungskitty3 points1y ago
mocha macchiato…
wtchtrsh2 points1y ago
This is not routine but if you are making an iced drink with mocha or white mocha and you splash milk in the bottom of the cupfirst, then add your sauce, then swirl, then swirl in the espresso, then top off with the rest of the milk, ice etc, it mixes in way easier. Or iced coffee/cold brew works the same as milk if someone orders one of those with sauce..
[deleted]6 points1y ago
my girlfriend’s favorite drink is the white mocha so I ALWAYS was adamant about taking that extra step to swirl it in and get it all mixed together anytime someone ordered one because there were a few times baristas at my store fucked up my girlfriend’s drink by not doing it.
one particular day during a rush, this very strict, by the book supervisor was on bar and I had stepped in to help. this was in the middle of december, there were at least fifteen if not more drinks lined up, there were still plenty of labels that hadn’t pulled yet, and so I’m getting into my groove and trying to help her—I had a system for rushes like that where I’d put all the syrups in first (like we were supposed to) and started shots for her. she straight up just stopped and said “oh, no, i never put my syrups in first” and i explained that it seemed a hell of a lot quicker (i said it nicer than that though) to get the drinks lined up started ahead of time instead of just one by one, considering there was a line nearly out the door at that point. She then says “it’s fine I got it, I have my own way of doing it so it’s fine.”
It annoyed the fuck out of me because 1) I had always been taught that syrups go first and this supervisor was VERY by the book so it didn’t make sense to me how doing each drink individually the way she was was supposedly “quicker” and 2) i saw she was clearly struggling and stepped in to help even though i wasn’t on bar. all of my other coworkers were always appreciative when i did that for them and very willing to let me help, they all knew my system and knew i could get the drinks started for them so all they had to do was add the shots and finish it off. needless to say I was very offended considering it was so busy and i didn’t see a need to be so nit picky about it but decided to just let it go and do something else.
for the record, she was definitely one of the few baristas that messed up my girlfriend’s drink multiple times lmao. but I was just baffled that someone that was so by the book was completely making the drinks wrong. like, it’s common sense, if you don’t mix the syrup in, which requires putting the syrup in first and swirling it in with the hot espresso so it’ll melt into the drink, the drink is gonna taste like shit.
goldqueen2873 points1y ago
Seeing white mocha with the espresso layered on top doesn’t just taste like shit, it LOOKS like shit, and I’d feel like shit if I handed smth like that to a customer
drinkliquidclocks40 points1y ago
Yeah I don't get that. I stir every drink that has something in it. If it has ice I stir it after ice so it actually gets cold. As long as the customer is nice, I want their drink to be worth the $6! I'm a customer too so I want them to enjoy :D
RedKamo23 points1y ago
I was swirling my can of beer the other day. If it’s in my hands, it’s gettin swirled.
charley-bananas11 points1y ago
Yep, should see me when I pick up my little cousins.
casprinjuniper [OP]2 points1y ago
I was doing that the other day with red wine. It didn't end well. 🤦
First_Leather_115914 points1y ago
SERIOUSLY!! It pisses me off when I see white mocha sitting at the bottom of the cup. Or cold mocha milk. Idc if it’s a cold drink u make that shit again or stir it lol. It pisses me off!!
DownWithTheSadness14 points1y ago
Swirling is so important! Makes a huge difference!
4filth12 points1y ago
I personally fucking hate this job and I still always swirl my drinks. Not sure what the first part of your post has to do with anything
casprinjuniper [OP]1 points1y ago
Love this.
The first part I was generally bitching about how some people hate corporate so they in turn don't give a fuck about the job they are doing and don't care about the customers.
The straw thing...IDK. I have no idea where that came from. It's always on my mind these days. 😳😳😳😅🤣
jdsalingersdog11 points1y ago
It ain’t easy out there— I reckon I do like to be kind & thoughtful & treat others as I’d like to be treated (do no harm take no shit)— but shoot, douches are gonna douche. Thanks for being kind in a job that can make it challenging to do so!
lewabwee7 points1y ago
I don’t really respect syrup as a concept and I don’t add sugar to my coffee but I still do the barista swirl because I’m incapable of allowing myself to do something poorly.
KenansCloud6 points1y ago
I cant swirl them, I keep burning myself so i stir them instead
charley-bananas10 points1y ago
For lattes, stir the shots and syrups before adding the milk or other liquids. For brewed coffee, the syrups or sugar go first then about an ounce of coffee, swirl then add the rest
KenansCloud7 points1y ago
Just tried the drip coffee method, im in love, thank you so much
[deleted]5 points1y ago
I just follow anything the costumers tells me lol. Its their drink.
InternationalSector33 points1y ago
My number one pet peeve was when my baristas wouldn’t swirl and would leave thick ass layers of syrup at the bottom of iced drinks (especially white mocha). Like why? You would want yours mixed in and it takes literally two seconds to do
casprinjuniper [OP]1 points1y ago
Yep.
jams10153 points1y ago
I'm just a girl on Team Swirl. Every time, even with waters, lol. My wrist has a mind of its own at this point.
ETA: I gotta say, my heart is so full this fine Saturday morning, reading how many of us swirl and also how many of us have engrained this move into our souls and do it on all our drinks, all the time now. <3 Y'all.
snowpeech3 points1y ago
Cause I'm supposed to be sequencing and making four other drinks at the same time
ffennecfox3 points1y ago
We have stir sticks we're supposed to use but a lot of people I know just swirl.
charley-bananas3 points1y ago
Do you have metal stirring spoons? Don’t use the wood stir sticks, it gives the drink a flavor. Most people won’t notice but all you need is that one person who does to strain the day
ffennecfox2 points1y ago
No, we only have the wooden sticks. Nobody has ever complained thankfully.
startingfires562 points1y ago
I genuinely care about the drinks I make. It pains me to see people not care. Like the caramel ribbons are constantly made with regular caramel sauce but it should be with dark caramel. Or people don't follow the lines on the cups for making iced coffees with milk and lattes... I could go on. 😒
SelloutDude2 points1y ago
Back when I worked there, swirling was not standard and I was warned on numerous occasions.
ThrowawayTheOmlet2 points1y ago
Oh ye I swirl everything, including stuff that doesnt have anything added to it. (Unless its a CM). I cant stand having WM or sugar packets sitting at the bottom of the drink; it annoys me.
apple_low2 points1y ago
I honestly just keep forgetting :/ but I promise I do try to remember to swirl.
philosopher_cat_lady2 points1y ago
So I was trained that we don't stir coffee. Swirling doesn't seem very effective, as you would have to pour coffee not to the top before you swirled. Then that amount of coffee would be mixed, but you'd pour some black coffee on top. (Or maybe I'm thinking about this too hard?) Of course, you're right that cups of coffee with sugar in them should be stirred. It's just that Starbucks cares way more about speed and labor efficiency than about beverage quality, unfortunately. When I worked at another coffeehouse, we stirred each latte with a nice milk spoon.
4filth21 points1y ago
add the sweetener, pour a little bit of coffee on top of it, swirl *that* until all the sweetener melts, then finish pouring the coffee
KenansCloud1 points1y ago
Oh shiiit I gotta try this
charley-bananas8 points1y ago
For lattes, stir the shots and syrups before adding the milk or other liquids. For brewed coffee, the syrups or sugar go first then about an ounce of coffee, swirl then add the rest
casprinjuniper [OP]1 points1y ago
I LOVE all the comments here! So glad to see a lot of you feel the same way about swirling those bitches! 🤣🤩🤩🤩
karrotdunncold1 points1y ago
I almost always swirl my drinks if I’m on bar. The only exceptions are the shaken drinks (shake those bad boys until your arms hurt, no swirling is gonna fix a bad shake job), Frappuccino’s (except in the blender pre-blend, mixes a tad better), and macchiatos (because that’s part of the look).
My trainers hammered into me the importance of swirling the syrup and shots/coffee/milk from day one and I’ll never forget it nor can I imagine not doing it.
nedcoleman1 points1y ago
I just always offer a stir stick with every coffee that has packets of stuff added, I don’t think brief swirling is enough.
nerdyoats1 points1y ago
I do it every now and again. Why folks make a big fuss od if is beyond me. But often times I'll just put the sugar in after pouring the coffee and then if it takes cream, I'll add that in a circular motion. But if a customer asks me to stir it for them i will.

The ones who don't follow training, are the ones who enjoy Karen's in their store. After a Karen buys so many wrongly made drinks, the wrath will explode. The one closest to hand-off gets to hear from Karen.
The ones who don't rat on the slackers, are just as guilty. The store that is busy can't be held back by slackers on the clock.
I think it's up to the SM to watch how each Partner is making the drinks and if they are following standards. If not, I blame the SM for sitting in the back, updating their FB all day instead ensuring their store is trained properly to avoid problems.
