Hey guys. I start working at Starbucks on Monday. Any tips to get started?
Edit: and what is it like to work at Starbucks? Is it a good company to develop professionally?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Just know you won’t learn everything in one day. (There is a lot of information) It’s okay to take a moment to breathe Take you time with orientation You can google tips to work as a barista for the pumps and shots. Good luck friend!

thank you! I'm very anxious

Please embrace being new. Resisting advice & criticism so you don’t look “clueless” will only make it harder for you to become a great barista. The effort you put into it will be the amount of knowledge you’ll get out. Just do your best! Ask questions… and remember, if a customer is cussing at you, insulting you, or sexually harassing you, please speak up.

thank you!! are there a lot of problems with customers? I come from an experience of almost 3 years at McDonald's, and the customers there are very rude and ignorant

I will say; I don’t have the grace to be patient with them when they complain about the drive thru taking too long and say that they deserve for their order to be free since they’re late to work now when we have a literal running timer for how long they’ve been in the drive thru and… if you haven’t paid yet, you can leave at any time. If they’re late to work, that’s honestly their fault. Even mobile orders who’ve already paid can call and either get a replacement order for the one they weren’t able to get in time or ask about a refund.

To be entirely honest, it depends on the store! Every store will have good and bad customers. When I first started working at my store, it was a LOT of “bad” customers. But to be honest, a lot of our workers were rude. I used to have at least 3 bad and like- really bad, Like name calling type of customers a day, now it’s maaaaybe once a week and they are just a little annoying. Our store has gotten a whole lot better at customer connections. I will say, the best way to deal with an angry customer is to respond calmly and genuinely. If their drink is wrong, apologize and ask what was wrong with it even if it was made by a different store. Thank them for telling us and then ask them to try their drink before they leave. I think of every customer connection as a chance to soften the blow if they ever get a wrong drink because they’ll way more likely to be nice to you if they remember you being nice to them (:

thank you for the warning! I will train my conversation and flexibility with customers

a lot of the drink recipes are essentially the same so u don’t have to memorize that many things! for example, all of the refreshers follow the same steps: juice base > water (or lemonade) > fruit inclusions > ice!!
GHOST_GENTLEMAN [OP]1 points1y ago
that's great! seems to be pretty simple. However, there is a wide variety of drinks on the menu, right?
beefworld2 points1y ago
yes, there’s definitely a lot! but with practice and some reviewing on ur own time you’ll get the hang of it :) a lot of the drinks are just variations of the same thing, like the shaken espressos and frappuccinos! frapps have a recipe pattern of 2 3 4 that you’ll learn more about during ur training :D

Development is so cool to see and recognize in yourself, it's crazy to look back and see how far you came.

So is it a good company to make a career of?
Word_Uo0 points1y ago
I would say so, I haven't worked a lot of jobs but this place has made me feel like I'm always working towards something. Like yeah I'm working for money and benefits(ASU is awesome), but at the same time there is a goal of moving up which can easily happen if you demonstrate those skills for barista trainer, supervisor, etc.

like everyone said, ask lots and lots of questions. you’ll make mistakes- and that’s ok! you’re new, and there is A LOT to learn. don’t take anything personally, whether that be from customers or your partners. it’s very fast-paced and there’s sososo many things to keep track of, but you’ll get the hang of it. it’s more bearable when you have good management and get along with your partners.
Our mission is to provide everyone with access to large- scale community websites for the good of humanity. Without ads, without tracking, without greed.
