Shifts/management will put you on drive thru window/front cash for as long as they can. When I started I had zero bar time besides during my training. I started asking to go on bar after a few months, but obviously I wasn’t fast/needed guidance when they put me there, so when they did, it would be for no more than half an hour. I eventually brought up to management that I wanted to be able to do every position, including bar, and there was no way I’d learn/be fast enough for service unless I was given the opportunity to spend more than half an hour there as well as be “thrown into the fire” and work it during peak.
In my opinion, they’re way too concerned with drive thru times/providing service to guests as fast as possible, so they put off giving new hires practice on bar as much as possible so they can meet quotas.
I’d suggest asking for bar time/practice as soon as you start. Don’t wait and let them put you on DT window or cash for 4+ hours straight.
I’d also suggest making sure you stay planted in your role/position. Shifts/management in my store are very insistent that you don’t move from your assigned role. For example, on DT window, we’re not allowed to move from that spot with the exception of washing our hands after handling money. If we need anything, we have to ask someone else to get it. They’re very adimant that the window person makes connections eith every single guest- conversation, compliments, etc- especially if they’re waiting for a drink. If we see another partner struggling/very busy, it’s not okay to move and offer help. This has been frustrating for me because I believe in team service and helping my co workers. But doing so at Starbucks gets you scolded.
For the most part, it’s a pretty okay place to work. I started there during covid (I worked in restaurants and obviously was laid off when they closed.) I am grateful for them giving me employment. And, the benefits and perks are amazing. But, it is a corporate company. Always remember to not sacrifice yourself, your mental well being, your relationships, etc for the company. At the end of the day, they’ll do and ask of you whatever is needed for the business to succeed. Good luck!
