markout questions (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mollythewiz
so i’m still kind of newer to sbux and i’m trying to figure some things out still. is it okay to come by and use your markout on food or drink during the first part of your day if you have work later. like do you still get the markout during your break and before your shift?

It’s been back and forth and rather unclear as far as if partners get extra mark outs on days they work because of the free food and bev available on days off. I would say no, as I have heard of partners being fired for this.

As far as policy goes:

You get mark outs as follows…

Days you work a shift: mark outs are free bevs and 1 food item (unless you are working a double - over 8 hours - , in which case you get two food items) from 30 mins before until 30 mins after your shift. There is no stated limit on bevs but you can only get *one at a time* and you are limited by breaks where you’ll have time to drink them (but there is no rule against say, getting a second bev within the 30 mins after your shift if you’ve finished the first one sitting in the cafe and want one to-go).

On days off (a COVID-benefit that has been extended through 10/21 and is being considered for permanent implementation - watch for this in weekly updates): one free food and one free bev.

This is the corporate policy, so if you work at a Tarbux or other license location your rules may differ.

Over 8 was two food items... Fml. Worked 4 to 2 Mon-Thurs and wanted to die

There may be some further stipulation on this that it has to be coverage for more than one shift (ie usually when covering for another partner or being scheduled a 'true double' which is 12 hours and would also mean you qualify for 2 30's or a 1 hour meal break + 2 10's), but as far as I am aware over 8 hours technically qualifies you for 2 food mark outs. I'm a little unclear as to the exact semantics of where the line is, but I know when I worked open to close on Sundays (which was 9am-7pm at the time, so 10 hours) I was able to mark out 2 food items but only got 2 10's and a 30 still because of the duration not being 12 hours total.

When did they extend this again? I’ve been specifically searching the weekly updates but obviously missed it. Last I heard was September 28th.
potatopoisoning 2 points 1y ago
Sorry, I meant 10/21 as in October 2021, it probably is 9/28, our SM was the one who told us and he said “they pushed it back to the end of September”, it very likely is the 28th and those last 2 days were just an after-thought.

No, if you work on a given day you can only get the markout right before until right after your shift. :/ I hope that makes sense
mollythewiz [OP] 4 points 1y ago
hmmm okay. thank you.
HotDogClouds 16 points 1y ago
Nah bruh mark out only applies 30 min before and after your shift, on your breaks, and on your days off
mollythewiz [OP] 2 points 1y ago
so i can do both or only once a day during one of those times?
HotDogClouds 8 points 1y ago
You get three mark outs on days you work, you get one drink 30 min before your shift, one drink on your break, and one drink 30 min after your shift. Oh and one food item. The food isn't like the drinks, you only get one free food item on days you do and don't work.
mollythewiz [OP] 4 points 1y ago
ohhh okay! thanks so much. that makes so much more sense.
HotDogClouds 8 points 1y ago
No problem! But be careful, because communication can be very inconsistent between corporate and management. Corporate might change this on a whim and some people think you can only have one or two drinks. Just do your best to stay informed with as accurate info as you can

You actually get unlimited drinks during your shift, one drink 30 minutes before, and one drink 30 minutes after
hecaete47 2 points 1y ago
When did it change to 3 total?

/former partner, left mid-June
HotDogClouds 1 points 1y ago
Also former partner, left July. But it's always been that way for my store??
ItzBoogieMan -1 points 1y ago
You’re telling me I can get Southwest Bean Wraps for free??? Once per week??? I’ve been a partner for 2 years and this is the first time I heard you can get food and drinks only if you work and 30 min before.

2 food free per week, 1 day off and 1 day on.

3 free drinks per week on days off.

1 drink 30 mins before and 1 after your shift.

Unlimited during shift.

Is this correct? And if so how do I use my mark out for free food?
HotDogClouds 2 points 1y ago
At my store that's not how it goes?? And I mean one food item per day! But you only get one and it's covered as long as it's not like, the marshmallow dream bar or something. Ours goes

One drink 30 minutes before, one drink during (on your break), and one more after your shift as long as you get it before 30 minutes is up. One food item every shift.

Then days off goes one drink and one food item. There are no weekly limits?

And how you mark it out (and you are not allowed to mark out your own food but if everyone is busy ask you SM if you can ring yourself up) is you go into the discounts area and it will have other buttons but the ones you need for this kind of stuff say partner beverage, partner food, and partner markout. I'll explain markout in a sec.

Partner beverage is the button you press to get free drinks, but you have to know your numbers lol.
Partner food is same thing but for food.

Partner markout is also the same process, but this is for the bags of beans that are not be suitable for sale soon (my store includes the instant coffee things with this too). But that one is only once a week and it resets on Monday. And you can't save them, once the next Monday passes, you still only have one per week.
HotDogClouds 1 points 1y ago
Ours isn't unlimited during shifts because there was a huge problem with people just leaving their drinks lying around and they regularly got sent out because the DT thought that was a drink for customers
HotDogClouds 3 points 1y ago
I wouldn't recommend drinking three of those drinks a day though lol your body would cry from the lack of nutritional value.
mollythewiz [OP] 3 points 1y ago
caffeine😀😃😀😀
DaddyGray69 3 points 1y ago
Unlimited drinks 30 min before and after as well as throughout your shift. One free food item a day even when you're off. One free drink per day when you're off.
ShaggysCumrag 2 points 1y ago
there’s nothing stopping u from going to different starbucks for free drinks either. i know for a fact that i’ve had an entire day of meals fueled by starbucks from simply store hopping lmao
coffeegirrrl 2 points 1y ago
Your numbers are tied to each transaction. You can and will be fired if someone notices this.
ShaggysCumrag 2 points 1y ago
they should regulate this instead of expecting baristas to throw their lives into making venti white mochas with extra caramel drizzle and vsccf 18392929482828 times a day then.

fuck corporate coffee and their intent. starbucks doesn’t pay enough to support living in this economy so i dare them to fire me. at least i know how to shake alt milks unlike some of these baristas
MatchingColors 2 points 1y ago
Officially, no.

Unofficially, maybe…
medusas-garden 3 points 1y ago
Yeah at the very least at my store my SM doesn’t care if we use our mark out more than once bc she just at least wants it accounted for for inventory purposes. I’m not gonna go around telling people they can mark out whatever without consequences bc apparently you can be fired for this but if Starbucks is gonna take this so seriously and the system isn’t smart enough to stop you from using your full mark out more than once in a day and leaves it up for human error, they need to decide whether they want to relax this policy or update the system.

lol

So you guys just don’t make drinks whenever you want and experiment with stuff? You mark every single thing out? We made a frap the other day and blended a lemon loaf in with strawberry purée on top it was heavenly. I usually get a tall cold brew while I work usually a couple and I remember to ring them up if I’m lucky but most of the time I don’t. I am trying to get better but I think a billion dollar company will survive if I drink as much coffee as I want.
dexterwolf1 1 points 1y ago
Yeah, as far as I know if you work that day, the general consensus is don’t use your free mark out. Only stick to the 30 min before, one food and bev during, and then 30 min after.
