It typically points to either a time management issue, or that your operating hours need to be extended.

We usually get out 20-30 min after closing. When are you starting to do all of you closing stuff such as lobby(wiping tables, sweeping, mopping, bathroom), trash run, dishes etc? Do not wait till customer leave before you start doing lobby, unfortunately you need to do it while customers are still sitting.
ConsistentCow5848 16 points 1y ago
We actually do the lobby around five if not ealier. Dishes are done continuously throughout the day. We start doing closing stuff no later than six. But we only ever have three people including shift after eight. And I think i remember being told we're one of the busiest stores in the country.
looker009 9 points 1y ago
Labor shortage is a big thing and it's very unfortunate they don't raise the pay to get more people hired. You doing closing lobby cleaning around 5 or not earlier? Are you not having to do it again by the time you get near closing? We close at 9:30 and usually start wiping tables by 7:45, then sweeping/mopping and then restrooms we will start cleaning 1 hour before closing and will keep it closed after we clean them.
ConsistentCow5848 6 points 1y ago
I guess thats true but at the same time we have over 30 partners at my store. and no we don't have to do the lobby again aside from occasionally wiping the tables down before we walk out the door
jonegbert 21 points 1y ago
bestie we close at 9 and are out by 9:15 😳
ConsistentCow5848 6 points 1y ago
Oh my god your so lucky. I work 4-9:30 tonight which really means 4-11:30 😩
jonegbert 2 points 1y ago
do you get a lunch since its really a 6 hr unlike the schedule? if not you should talk to ur store manager about scheduling till later than 9:30(? im not sure if they can do anything but its worth asking)
ConsistentCow5848 3 points 1y ago
Nah the most I get is my two tens. We don't get lunches unless we're scheduled at least 6.5 hours at my store

Isn’t that illegal

That’s way too late after close, sounds like some tasks need to be moved to elsewhere in the day.
C0ffeeCoffeeC0ffee 9 points 1y ago
What are you doing between 9 and 11 or 11:30?
ConsistentCow5848 14 points 1y ago
Cleaning back of house, wiping all the walls down, cleaning out all the pitchers, cleaning all three ice bins then filling them, running trash, making wips, and sweet cream toddy's...basically a lot of stuff. All While our shift is doing all the closing shift tasks.
sugarraide 11 points 1y ago
at my store, we try to get boh done an hour or two before close and the same goes for backups. we like to put our teas and iced coffee in a few trenta cups when it gets to abt 30min- 1 hr before close so we can get those dishes done too. another trick is to try and take out garbages abt an hour or two early as well and flip them upside down so you don’t have the urge to throw something away in there and have to take it out again. we usually keep abt two trash cans upright for use. every stores different but hope this helps!
peachyyybabeee 5 points 1y ago
yeah we do trash run and whip and sweet cream prep during the day + clean ice bins during clean play

Yeah this is similar to my store. We close at 8, scheduled till 8:30, but almost always stay closer to 9. 9:30 if it’s clean play. We always try to preclose around 7/7:30 to help with that time. Clean everything we can and take it to the back to be rinsed while we have that last 4th person there to help
Butterflybo0ty 5 points 1y ago
Oh hell no
Babs9220 4 points 1y ago
Ooooh yeah, our closes regularly took 1-1.5 hours. And then we stopped having a precloser as soon as I had to do the pull and run 30s. Impossible running a 2hr+ 2 person floor for the busiest drive thru in the town 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃

Bruh we close at 10 and make it a game to get out ASAP 10:12pm is our record
Ok_Nerve4852 3 points 1y ago
My store does prep during mids then I have the front/food go around the store in a circle cleaning sinks, ice bings, blenders, pitchers, etc. prepping to close around 5:30 or 6. Routines should be reevaluated. Also people should be flexing when not busy. If they aren’t doing tasks on their own, provide each person with a list of what they are responsible for in order to close.

My old store was like this. We closed at 9 pm but closers were only on the schedule until 9 pm. We usually got out at around 10, 9:30 if we were super lucky, 10:30/11 if we were super unlucky. We were always expected by our manager to be there until at least 10 but for some reason she just wouldn’t put the accurate hours on the schedule. It was a bit confusing for green beans
uhhyikesbro 2 points 1y ago
seriously. my old store used to close at midnight and us closers wouldn't get out until closer to 1:30/2am. the mid handoffs were never really solid, and closes were always understaffed.

I close with 3 people at a high volume store. We close at 9pm and are out by 9:30-9:40

I’m surprised your DM hasn’t stepped in to say something! We got in trouble for leaving 30 minutes after we were supposed to be done! The DM told my manager if we’re not finished at 9:30 to leave a note for morning crew. I do not agree with that and I’m glad I’m at another store now. At the end of the day it’s gonna be dear impossible if you don’t have the staff :( I’m a shift and what I do is smash out allllll of my shift tasks as early as I can manage. Then I get my butt on the floor and I smash out as much as we can with the store still open. I usually just do the tasking myself bc I know I can do it in a timely manner (sadly all our closers are baby baristas and literally all teenagers). An hour before close is the latest you should have someone start floors and bathrooms. In my experience the shift will need the full 30 after close to count drawers and do the deposit and all that, so in that time the baristas can take down the bars and wipe everything down and we should be good. Usually get out 10 minutes later since like I said I have baby baristas closing.

Hwlll nah. If they can’t make you stay past 9:30 unless there’s an emergency situation

My worst closing shift was on holidays, either Victoria Day (May 18th) or Christmas Eve. Those were the only days where we stayed more than an hour after close (closed at 21:30 on Victoria Day, and 18:00hrs on Christmas Eve). Victoria Day was the worst, we did no closing things until probably after 20:30, at which point I did DT and cafe, the other barista did dishes and the shift did shift things. Even that night, we probably got our at 22:30-22:45, even though we were scheduled until 22:00.

All other days, we'd be scheduled until 30 minutes after store close and would get out at that time.
