Hi there! I'm very new to working at Starbucks, and I am just stressed and anxious to high hell. I love my coworkers, and they are all helpful, but I dread going to work and not knowing things, or being a bother or burden to those who are working there. Do you guys have any advice to help me alleviate some stress, or maybe have some guides to help me memorize drinks? Idk I'm just very stressed :-\

When I was in college, I would go to Starbucks as a customer and literally had the thought “there’s no way I could ever do that job, it’s too complicated.” Fast forward a few years and I basically need a day job and I get hired at Starbucks. I worked there for 6 years, have trained partners that are now shifts and assistant managers, and I’m the manager of an espresso shop myself. It’s a lot right now, but you got this. You can do it.

Thank you so much for the words of encouragement!! I was having a really rough anxiety episode last night, so it's nice to read the comments this morning on my way to my first weekend and 8 hour shift!

One of the first things id tell people when training them: It’s just coffee. People might get upset or it might be stressful, but it’s just coffee.

Trainer here, and it's completely normal to feel overwhelmed like this! I actually asked a lot of my co-workers how long it took to feel like they had a handle on things and most everyone says one to two months on the job. It takes time and repetition to really get everything down, but don't be afraid to put together a little cheat sheet and keep it in your apron for quick reference! I made some for my green beans and I give it to them when we start learning bar, I'll see if I can find the link for you 😊

EDIT: Here's a great resource from another redditor! I used a lot of this on the cheat sheet I made for my green beans. You've got this, just be patient with yourself and don't assume you're a burden. We've all been new at some point!

Congrats!! If you want, I can send you the pocket-sized version of that info I made 👍🏻 I laminate it so they can keep it in their apron without worry and they've been loving it!

I feel you, during my first few weeks I would sit in my car and scream after work , and sometimes I’d be so stressed I’d have trouble sleeping. I suggest quizlet for recipes and you could also ask to take home your store’s recipe book for awhile. Today is exactly my 2 months of working at Starbucks and I am so much more confident on bar and happy at work. You will get here with time too :)

Ok it's so good to know I'm not alone in this! I'm excited to get to that point where I'm not dreading going in! Thank you for the encouragement! (≧▽≦)

You’ve got this! All I can say is you’re doing better than you think. This is a rough job, especially at the start. Today they stuck me on DTO and I didn’t really know how to work the POS system. I had a panic attack, I kid you not. I breathed through it somehow, and my fellow baristas helped me by talking to the customer for me, putting certain customizations on the screen for me, and if all else failed, taking over for me completely. This is a high stress job at first (and maybe it continues to be 🤷🏻‍♀️) but I’m sure we can get through it! Remember you aren’t a bother to your team. You are a part of the team, which means the goal of everyone is to succeed. If you need a little help in order to do that, then that’s what you need. If anyone treats you like a bother, it’s probably because of stress, a rush, or something going on with themselves. You can do it!
