“Can I get a straw” (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by iindiieecindiee
I’m sick of hearing that! All day I’m asked “can I get a straw” I just want to ask them why they feel the need to waste a straw when the lid is already A STRAW-LESS LID! The whole point is to reduce waste so why the fuck do customers still ask for one! Obviously I’m going to give the customer a straw when it’s a frap but you ordered a nitro cold brew or an iced latte that’s just being stupid. Honestly at this point I would rather go back to the original lid so customers can shut the fuck up.

I have a major teeth sensitivity issue and the strawless lids cause me immense mouth pain when I use them. A lot of people use straws for similar reasons. Also straws from fast food chains aren't evens small fraction of the pollution problem. I mean over 90% of plastic in the ocean comes from industrial fishing and large corporations but it's a lot easier for the corporations to blame everyday people instead of holding themselves accountable and changing their ways.

I agree with all of this very much but specifically came here to say the sensitive teeth thing. I hate straws too but holy jesus does it hurt if I try to drink an iced drink with no straw :(

Same here!! Not to mention, making the strawless lids built like the hot lids wasn't really thought out, it's hard to drink them with all the ice getting in the way!! Straws with these particular lids are j easier and a lot less pain and hassle at the end of it :/

Hi I’m a SSV who prefers straws because I don’t like my lips touching the same surface the baristas hands directly touch. I know we keep up on hand washing, but there’s still so much contact the baristas touch while working in between hand washes, I’ll stick with my straw thanks.

it’s a preference thing ig. some people just have different priorities (sadly reducing waste usually isn’t high on their list). i’ve heard a lot a people like to use them to mix their drinks or avoid spills. it’s hard to drink from a cup while driving because it can be bumpy and you can easily get it on yourself. i also heard people don’t like getting it on their upper lip??? super odd but whatever ig lol. i don’t think straws are the issue, it’s the material the straws are made of. paper straws would be a great substitute. i personally rather drink it from the lid instead of using a straw. maybe this would deter customers from asking for straws if they don’t like the paper one.

No. Paper straws are worse, because they disintegrate in the Frappuccino’s and other drinks.

I don’t get the attention straws get when the bigger problem is the plastic cups. We literally use paper for hot drinks. Why not the cold ones too? The cups don’t disintegrate.

I mean, our paper cups are unfortunately terrible too, cuz the coating on them (see $1 for a lot of info about it)

This is unhinged af 😂

Apparently the straw-less lids use more plastic and energy to manufacture than the old lids plus straws combined.
It’s not your customers who are causing climate change and all the scary things we hear about—it’s corporations. Don’t get mad at the wrong people.

For me it’s not the waste aspect that bothers me as much (because literally 90% or more of plastic waste comes from industrial fishing and such, so I like to ask people who are so against straws if they still purchase and consume fish, but that’s another convo) but the fact that when I’m on drive thru window someone will pull up, I have hardly greeted them and told them their total, and they’re like CAN I GET A STRAW????? Like sir/ma’am… I haven’t even handed you your drink, can you freaking chill!?! That’s one of my biggest pet peeves for sure

Edit: typo!

It’s not that big of a deal lol. Just ask the customer if they want a straw or not to prevent them from asking. Someone might have sensitive teeth, drinks with inclusions are annoying to drink from because they inclusions go up to the top, and I personally would rather drink from a straw because people cover their hands over the top of the lid. There’s worse things at Starbucks man smh lol.

it becomes a big deal when the district manager forbids you to give out straws and everytime you have to aegue on why you cant give them a straw for the overpriced drink they just bought, while you have more drinks added to the que and impatient customers staring you down
Nigee_Ogee 2 points 1y ago
Well the person who posted this didn’t use that as a reason why they don’t like giving out straws, so no, that doesn’t apply here.
pandora30012 1 points 1y ago
it applies in my case 😊

some people have teeth sensitivity issues or they’re concerned with the staining properties of coffee & tea. i don’t personally use the straws but i understand it most of the time when customers ask, especially during a pandemic. it’s frustrating that it’s more waste, but the current lids have more plastic than the old lids + straw combined. the only time i’m like ….alright cmon now is if the drink has cold foam
phillipniemann 3 points 1y ago
Dude…did someone hurt you lmao it’s just a straw, to avoid this I just ask customers if they want a straw or not.
RICKYOURPOISIN 3 points 1y ago
Rn the only time o see the straw necessary is with the refreshers cuz the inclusions all go up to the lid
hopkinsdafox 2 points 1y ago
There’s also disabilities where they need the straw….
