first day tomorrow, some help plz (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Inside_Drink_3968
4 questions regarding my first day of training tomorrow :0 :

1. what should i be expecting for the first day?

2. what should i bring for my first day? other than my apron and name tag, things like that, is there anything else i should carry around?

3. weird question. should i enter through the front door or back door? i was never given this information, and i’m over thinking it :)

and 4. would these shoes be a part of dress code?

https://www.nike.com/t/blazer-low-77-vintage-mens-shoes-jsksCM/DA6364-001

or if anyone has any ‘stylish’ shoes that fit under dress code lmk!!

Thank you so much for whoever can answer my question!

1. You’ll be introduced to the people working and do a lot of computer training! Maybe a little bit of customer support training (stocking, cleaning, helping around the store when needed) they won’t throw you straight onto bar so don’t be stressed!
2. It’s always nice to have a sharpie and a pen also in your apron pockets! (Sometimes a chalk marker)
3. I would say front door? Just so you are seen and you can introduce yourself to the barista on register... everyone knows you are coming and are excited to meet you! Don’t be nervous.
4. Shoes should be fine... it really depends on your manager

I also want to add to #3! It’s likely your store may also have you wait to check in and maybe walk you through covid coach/temp check ect. Before you go to the back of house!
Hope this helps !

Dont spend 85 on those they will get trashed so quick its not worth the money
Inside_Drink_3968 [OP] 16 points 1y ago
oh, i already have those shoes that i wear for school. but if there gonna get trashed, do you have any recommendations that i could go out and get before i start?
nilvisualcameo 25 points 1y ago
You could pull off wearing those honestly for a couple weeks cuz at work they won't have you doing any crazy stuff like bar or drains for a while, but I would recommend going to walmart they actually have some nonslip shoes that aren't ugly for like 20-40 bucks. Just saying cause those Nike's are nice and you might want to keep a nice pair of shoes for school. I used to always get shoes that weren't ugly but on the more expensive side, within 8 months I was already buying new shoes because the sole was coming off or a toe was poking out. I'm a 198\*\*\*\* so thats a lot of shoes ahaha. Shoes for Crews on Amazon has good shoes too

I and a lot of baristas I know wear doc marten shoes/boots. You might not be able to grab them before tomorrow, but once they’re broken in, they work great for me. I’ve worn them nearly every shift for two years now and they’re still in very good condition, keep my feet from hurting after 7-8 hour shifts, and hold up to hot liquid spills/slips/workplace hazards well. I’d suggest waterproofing the leather before your first time wearing em to work though!

I second Docs. They’re worth the money as long as you keep up with cleaning & conditioning. If you get the Chelsea boots you won’t have to clean around laces either.
HollowRibcage 6 points 1y ago
Yoooo why didn’t I know thiiiiissssssssss !! The only boots I wear occasionally are my Timberlands and out of the three pairs I have only one can handle the hours but even then after a point they do hurt.
occamysRazor 3 points 1y ago
Def recommend Docs! Especially the industrial nonslip line. They look exactly like normal Docs but they don't skid everywhere. I have the steel-toed variety, also, which has saved my toes from many things XD

I like getting the tred safe shoes from Walmart, good slip resistant kitchen shoes, I usually get about 8months to a pair. $30, slip resistant, and good foot support inside

Shoes for crews!! I love my boots, have had them for almost two years and wear them every day. I’ll probably have to buy a new pair soon but for $65 (payable in installments too!!) I got 2 years of running around, spilling stuff, even trudging through the snow in the worst Midwestern winter weather (and my feet stayed dry). They’re non slip and waaaay cheaper than docs and I actually get a lot of compliments on them.

I came here to comment exactly this
angrylilbean 10 points 1y ago
I highly recommend checking out sketchers nonslips! They’re not the most attractive but if you show your paystub from Starbucks they’ll give you 20% off
Kivic 8 points 1y ago
Buy non slips! Might not be the best looking but they will save you! I see so many baristas slipping at work because they wear nikes and vans.
Vilali 2 points 1y ago
I started out in Nikes and hated my life. I switched to no slip New Balances and the only thing I've slid a little on is a physical ice cube.

I had to wear my Nikes the other day because I was pet sitting and forgot my New Balances (keep the Nikes as emergency shoes in my car) and I almost wiped out like 90 million times.

Expect a lot of computer training. You wont need anything else but your apron or nametag, but a sharpie is always good to carry around. Those shoes are fine within dresscode, but i would highly recommend nonslips.
No_Yogurt_4602 4 points 1y ago
Reading glasses if you need them and a bottle of water, you'll be on the computer for a while.

i have $1 ik theyre a little pricey but ive had them since i started working at starbucks and never needed anything better!! totally worth it :)
fookyall 2 points 1y ago
I love these shoes but my fat feet don’t work well in slip on’s. I ended up getting some from Shoes For Crews that looks like the lace up Vans but they’re leather all the way around. And super comfy!
toto517n 3 points 1y ago
After almost two years working at the ‘Bucks I like the doc marten non slip version of their 1460 boot. Most non slips last only about 5 months for me and any other shoe i can’t work in without slipping around.

$1

Expect that you will have to follow someone your whole shift on your first day, you won’t be doing a whole lot. They won’t put you on bar and let you make drinks. And the same person you will be with the whole day, you will have the same breaks. You should bring some of your own pens and markers for like dating things and so on. I don’t think those shoes would be a big deal, I would talk to whoever is training you or a manager when your working. I enter through the front doors when I start working because they might have the back doors locked. But it may be different for you. I don’t see how bad it might be if you entered through the front doors! But I hope this helps for you! ❤️‍🔥

I wear non slip doc martens and so do lots of people in my store. They’re expensive ($200), and buying them for the intention to get trashed at work was worth it, as these have been my best work shoes yet.

For shoes I would recommend switching to some work shoes that you don't mind getting messy (good soles if you will work for a long day), but those should work for now

Also a sharpie is a part of the dress code technically, but people often forget so they'll end up asking to borrow yours. I recommend writing your name on it if you don't want to lose it :)
katrinka_ 2 points 1y ago
so as of shoes i literally got mine at ross for hella cheap
Vilali 2 points 1y ago
I do not recommend those shoes. Invest in a good pair with no slip. Walmart sells them fairly cheap. I wear the $80 New Balances that are no slip. They aren't cute, but I have yet to fall on my ass since I started. They also have FANTASTIC support.

1. lots of modules on a computer. depending on your manager you might do them all at once or they might have you do some and then go out on the floor. and repeat over the course of a few days.

2. its always good to have a pen and a sharpie in your apron pocket

3. so i’ve seen different stores have different methods. i’d say just use the front door. they’ll let you know of you need to use the back door moving forward.

4. if you can afford docs i would say go that route they’re durable and as long as you clean them you can still wear them out of work. if you can’t afford docs Walmart has similar boots that work well (or so i’ve heard) i can’t speak on their durability but i’ve heard good things. if you have flat feet insoles might be a good option i have coworker who swears by them

good luck!

For work shoes I suggest spending a bit of money. Especially at a job like Starbucks where you are on your feet the whole shift. I spent $160 on a pair of shoes for work by Ecco. They’re a danish shoe company what makes fantastic shoes, which have the support built into the base of the shoe rather then the insert so they don’t lose support. I used to work at an orthotics shoe store years before I started at Starbucks, and sold them like mad. I’ve had them for 2 years now and they show no sign of giving up on me. I finally bit the bullet about the price because I was spending $50 every 6-8 months on new work shoes before I work at the shoe store. So over all I’ve saved money over the past two years. They aren’t labeled as non-slip shoes but I’ve never slipped in them before. The exact kind I have are the Ecco Soft 7 in black. If you need help on the EU size conversion I’m happy to help.

Also as I’m writing this I realize I’m assuming you identify as female so if your not I can give you other suggestions.

So I’ve been working for Starbucks for a month now all I can say is be positive, it’s a lot but in the end it’s worth it. When you have free time look over recipes so you don’t feel behind and always ask questions
crunchycookie28 8 points 1y ago
ask yourself if it’s worth it again in a couple of months tho😭
symebe 1 points 1y ago
I’m already second guessing myself 😭 one of my partners is just mad all the time, will turn my day from great to horrible real quick
