anxiety abt going back to college with work? [slight rant and ramble i’m sorry] (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by hannah_nj
(i’ve only been with the company since may)

i attend college about an hour away from my parents house and work, and i’ll be living up there on campus again during the semester, mostly because the program i’m in (biology major) has me in class for a long time and in my first year the best way for me to study was to be able to meet with my study group (all of whom live near campus), go to office hours, etc. and i can afford the residence fees so it’ll just make life less stressful than being in class 8:30-5:30 five days a week w 2 hours of commuting lol.

anyway i gave my availability as being able to work friday evenings, open all saturday, and open sunday until 7. my manager called me the other day to chat with me about it (“so talk to me about your limited availability on friday” girl i’m in college 😭), and just mentioned that i’ll have to plan my life around school and work. i think what she meant is just that i can’t book days off constantly to go out to events or parties and such which i wasn’t planning to, but it just made me a bit anxious about booking days off around exams and tests (which i have an ungodly amount of for some reason) and it getting denied or looked down on. at my job last year i had to switch from saturday and sunday shifts to only saturdays because i was just constantly falling behind during the week and didn’t have time to catch up over the weekend; since that was all online which didn’t click with me at all im hopeful it’ll be better this year but?

i’m honestly kind of tempted to quit and apply to my on-campus store; it’s licensed so less benefits but it pays better and is super lenient with hours/scheduling around class needs + it books in time off during reading breaks. i just don’t want to burn any bridges and i really do like my store and management, but i’m just worried i’m either going to become a shit employee who constantly is trying to book time off, or my grades are going to get really bad.

i dunno. i’ve made it so clear any time i’ve talked to my managers that i intended to stay here throughout the school year but…yeah. what have previous students done? and am i just projecting my anxiety onto this for no reason 😭

Is there no store between ur parents house and campus?

It sounds like you have your answer though. The commute to your current store and the demands of corporate Starbucks make it difficult to work there. It’s not your managers job to organize and time-manage your life. Set your boundaries. Work at a closer store. Or don’t work for Starbucks at all, and snag a spot at a less demanding retail/food joint.

yeah i think i do too … there’s one quite near campus actually, but i have a shift who just transferred from there who told me it’s a really bad environment right now, and i haven’t been here the 6 months needed to transfer yet either. idk, talked it over with my dad and he essentially told me to do whatever i need to do to put myself first which i don’t think is gonna be staying where i am
