I don't like the standard recipe for hot chocolate...anyone have a better one?(self.starbucksbaristas)

I like hot chocolate to be more sweet and more creamy, and there's just way too much mocha in the standard. I'm curious what the chocolate malt powder could do, can it be steamed with milk?

If you don't care about calories, a hot chocolate with half pumps mocha and half pumps white mocha made with breve is pretty decent hot chocolate
mini_unknown_error2 points1y ago
Quick question, what is breve? I keep hearing people talk abt it and ask for it but I'm not sure what it is.
sunflowercupcakee7 points1y ago
Steamed half and half at Starbucks. Apparently some coffee shop somewhere has a coffee drink called a breve and I have no idea what it is, but I was called a f*cking idiot for not knowing what it was by a lovely customer
Beardzesty5 points1y ago
The sad part is even the Breve from those stores is just a half and half latte. Our customers don't understand coffee at all. They just want whatever and however it comes.
MeggoEggoes2 points1y ago
You from the PNW by chance? We have a huge coffee chain called Dutch Bros and they call their drinks “breve.” I remember being very confused when customers ordered a “breve.” Had NO idea what that even meant. 🤷🏻♀️

Yup, it’s so annoying. If you want a hazelnut latte at DB, you have to order a hazelnut breve or they won’t know what you’re talking about because they don’t make lattes. 🙄😂

No I am from the south. Never even been the west coast.

I have a better one than what I've seen here, but the catch is you can only do it at holiday time, and should probably wait until it's just about Spring launch when holiday beverage orders are down. Fill a cup half full with chocolate swirls for the peppermint mocha, steam half and half extra hot, let hot cream melt the chocolate. Add vanilla to adjust sweetness as you see fit.
Don't go using all your store's chocolate swirls. Don't be that dick.
Edit: Also as a side note for all you customers lurking here, no. There's no way on Earth a store would let you order that.

The old recipe used pumps of vanilla in the hot chocolate because the regular chocolate is so bitter. Maybe try that and see if it works? If you want it creamier, maybe steaming whole milk or a little bit of heavy cream in your usual milk? I haven't tried this one but that's my best guess.
paolathepanda8 points1y ago
The old recipe is the only way I'll drink a hot chocolate:) T -3 pump mocha 1 pump vanilla G- 4 pump mocha 1 pump vanilla V- 5 pump mocha 2 pump vanilla

I get marble ones, half mocha half white mocha. Needs a bit of a stir but pretty good! Also, when I make my own I steam the milk a bit longer, which makes it just a bit lighter.
AvoFromCado5 points1y ago
I usually just do one less pump of the mocha sauce and add a pump or two of vanilla
TequilaMagicTrick5 points1y ago
Earl grey hot chocolate is a nice variation. Different than a traditional coco though.
medusas-garden2 points1y ago
How do you make it? Like a London fog but with mocha sauce?
TequilaMagicTrick3 points1y ago
Couple options. Been awhile since I had one. (I’m a past partner from the before times. Unicorn frappe hour broke me in 2016) Add mocha to a London Fog regular recipe. Or Steep tea in milk for 2-3 min the add your syrup & stir
interyx3 points1y ago
Haha yep. So we had a new manager the day the unicorn frappuccino launched and we had a whole store meeting. (we got some people from another store to cover our shifts to let everyone off the floor). One thing she mentioned was that corporate was simplifying our drinks so they were easier to make while a guy behind us was sweating and making this stupid goddamned layered powdered frappuccino.
I still think about that and laugh sometimes. We've gotten ridiculously complicated drinks ever since.
i_am_me471 points1y ago
is this actually good???? what does it taste like?? we have multiple people at my store who order it and i’ve always wondered
TequilaMagicTrick-1 points1y ago
Omg it’s almost like you could make one and find out.
i_am_me472 points1y ago
okay yes but no need to be an asshole; all i asked was if it was any good?
TequilaMagicTrick1 points1y ago
Do you like earl grey tea?
rio8envy73 points1y ago
Add vanilla
Babs92203 points1y ago
I do breve, and then subtract a mocha pump (or 2) for a vanilla pump 🤗
Scorpio-Rose2 points1y ago
My favourite hot chocolate that i crave constantly. My own special hot choc... ask for (in the tall or upgrade how you want) 2 pumps of white mocha. 1 pump normal mocha and 3 pumps vanilla. Its so much smoother then normal hot chocolate and i miss it on daily atm XD ive only had one person out of like 20 people say they dont like it and i think i made it wrong for that person. Try it. Its lovely.
YorkTownBratty2 points1y ago
It used to have vanilla in it which made it much better! I do two pumps of mocha, 1 white mocha and 2 vanilla.
Apprehensive-Meep2 points1y ago
A grande one with 3 pumps mocha, 2 pumps vanilla, 1 pump white mocha. Made breve. Absolute heaven on earth. If you wanna jazz it during holiday season I adore the chocolate swirls or the chesnut praline topping! ❤️
imathrowayslc1 points1y ago
Make it like a matcha latte but use the chocolate malt powder. Super good.
IvoryAngel112071 points1y ago
it should be able to be steamed in the milk bc we steam matcha in the milk so i wouldn’t see the problem with it. idk how it would taste though.
clumsycalico5 points1y ago
At our store at least there’s a hard rule that we cannot steam absolutely anything but matcha. Something about the new machines with different steam wands and they’ll break super easily. (I believe it because they break all the time anyway tbh) But with the old machines it was apparently way more lax and you could steam whatever.
IvoryAngel112073 points1y ago
yeah my store still has the old espresso bars even though almost everyone in our district has gotten the new ones 😅
