How long to hold tips? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by occamysRazor
My store has a ton of tips held for partners who have long since left, and even from borrowed partners who never picked them up. I know we have to hold onto them in case they come by to get them for a certain amount of time, but nobody in my store (even our SM) knows how long. What's the grace period for picking up tips once you no longer work at the store?

When I worked at Starbucks there was no technical policy for this- because technically the SM was responsible for mailing them to the partner's address, as it's that partner's money (I'm not sure if there's a technical policy on that wait time or not. It might be like 6mo). However I think I saw this happen literally once. Usually I only saw anything happen to these tips when a new SM took over and went "we have no idea who this is anymore" and recirculated them into the tip jar for current partners.

The SM is supposed to look up the most recent address for the partner in the employee system, get a money order in the amount of their tips, and mail it.

For borrowed partners, they should be able to trade tips to the other SMs at district meetings.

The legal answer is never is that money allowed to go back into the tip jar.

The real answer is most SMs wait 2-3 months and then recycle.

Your Sm should bring the tips for other store partners to a district meeting if they have them, but otherwise it’s up to the discretion of the Sm
