how to sequence refreshers/teas? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by iwmwsccbaecd
I’m a fairly new green bean, i’ve worked at my store for about 2 months, and i still don’t know how to sequence with refreshers or teas. I’ve been put on bar a lot recently, and i can get the drinks out quickly, i just slow down when i get a refresher. any tips?

iwmwsccbaecd [OP] 31 points 1y ago
Lol that’s what i thought, it seems impossible i just didn’t know if i was missing something
MasterBroccoli50 18 points 1y ago
haha you’re not missing anything it really is impossible

1. pour into shaker

2. begin shaking

3. somehow the lid flys off and you get it all over you

4. pour into shaker again

5. repeat

🥲

this literally happened to me today. i was shaking the refresher and the lid opened and it went everywhere during a rush 😭

Sequencing is really only frappuccinos and hot bar since they do part of the work for you ie autosteaming, pulling shots & blending
iwmwsccbaecd [OP] 9 points 1y ago
Alright that’s what i thought, thank you !

Going back a few years they used to tell you to stop before adding the ice to the shaker to start your next drink. Then they realized how silly that was I think and just said to finish the shaken drink all at once. And that was the last time they made a change that actually made things easier on partners
OneRoseDark 12 points 1y ago
this actually is what I do, because it keeps me in the rhythm of start/start/finish/start/finish/.../start/finish/finish and I don't lose track of the previous drink while I rush through an entire tea. ymmv as always tho
AMarie-MCMXCI 2 points 1y ago
I do that too, and then someone usually finished my shaken drink for me and throws my whole rhythm off.
MasterBroccoli50 26 points 1y ago
try and prep one before you pour the other first one and then pour the first one then shake the second but it’s it’s peak there literally no chance of sequencing teas

here is what u do. number one thing that’s helped me is. just get a good solid grip on shaker. shake with one hand, with ur free spare hand, put away lemonade, refresher box, etc and grab the next one and get it ready
computernoobe 2 points 1y ago
This is a dumb question but I have to ask. I have fairly normal hands. How do you shake it with one hand? Do you grab the shaker and use your index finger to clamp down the lid as you shake?
And do you shake the shaker towards you? Or simply just shake it upwards?

If I'm on drive thru bar I'll usually listen ahead for a esspresso or Frappuccino to start before a tea. So if a black tea is ordered first and I hear an iced white mocha ordered right after ill start the white mocha since I'll be able to make that before my shots are done pulling. But as far as sequencing just refreshers/teas, really just being fast at making each individual one is all the advice I have.
drinkliquidclocks 5 points 1y ago
My store is way slower than a normal bux but if if say there's 5 refreshers/teas to make, I grab 5 shakers, pour all the liquid, add all ice, then shake em all- bam, 5 refreshers ready to go... Lol

This may not be applicable at a normal store though?
iwmwsccbaecd [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I do that too but it’s difficult when i have two refreshers and a frappuccino to do lol
AUserNameThatsTaken1 4 points 1y ago
The best you could do is try double batching with the shakers
Roseyy-Girl 4 points 1y ago
There really is no right way to sequence those tbh. Because you ALWAYS have to have your hands on doing something with them. At least you tried to learn tho :) you learn to do them super fast as you go. Or you'll just be like me and learn the cheap ways without the shaker and then hate life when the district or regional manager comes by.
sailorgrumpycat 4 points 1y ago
The most i can think of is if there are a bunch of refreshers specifically you can scoop the inclusions into the cups just to have them ready and help i.d. the drinks.
Kivic 4 points 1y ago
Honestly, if you have multiple refreshers use the black lines on the cups to measure the juice/ water for each one that you have to make, before you pour it in the shaker to shake it. It saves a little time. Kinda like this:

1. Refresher base / water or lemonade measured in cup (for multiple cups)
2. Pour one cup into shaker
3. Add ice / fruit
4. Shake / finish
5. Repeat 2-4 until all refreshers are done.
paintthatface 4 points 1y ago
You have to start and finish teas/refreshers so you can’t sequence them technically
ShaggysCumrag 3 points 1y ago
a good way is to put all the ingredients in the shaker EXCEPT ice. so imagining this is drink 2: finish drink 1, start drink 3, go back and add ice-shake(finishing drink 2). finish drink 3.
iwmwsccbaecd [OP] 2 points 1y ago
This helped a lot, thanks!
jjaaccoobb16 2 points 1y ago
Say if you got a 3 tall green tea:
Make a trenta with light ice and shaken. Pour all to the first line then add ice.
jdestinyp 2 points 1y ago
I was always taught to put everything in the shaker, but the ice. Then start your next drink, come back, add ice, and shake.
zombiecabbage 2 points 1y ago
If I’m lucky to have two shakers I’ll prep them at the same time. Then shake one, pour, rinse. Pick up the other, shake, pour, rinse. Lid both of them when finished. Also ..... batching 🤭 lol
urlocaltransboy 1 points 1y ago
typically i put everything in, shake it, put it down, do something else till i can step away from it, then go back to the shaker and pour it in the cup etc etc
maybae-xxx 1 points 1y ago
Depending on my DTO during peak, I’ll ask them to shake it and finish after I put the drink in the shaker and start on the next. But yeah. No real sequence. You just gotta move fast. 🥺
YellowSphinx 1 points 1y ago
Making refreshers and teas is the best. You get to aggressively shake the hell out of it and it just makes everything so much better. And then pouring it into the cup while using the lid so people see how much drink they have. Stops them from bitching about ice.

Yea not gonna lie I wasn't the best barista. Started out super willing to do my best then got real resentful at my manager for the way he treated us. Quit giving a shit it All of us kind of did.
59625962 4 points 1y ago
This is the way
csaan18 2 points 1y ago
I drink refreshers and I literally do not mind if they are not shaken. They always taste the same.
Roseyy-Girl 2 points 1y ago
Thats what I do in a rush. Sorry, don't have all that time for extras. Only one I don't do it on is a mango dragonflies because it all needs to be colored. Except one time at the window one lady asked to make sure we shook it, and I was on bar, and we ALL simultaneously looked at each other so confused and a shocked lol.
AmbitiousCriticism 5 points 1y ago
Ugh - don't do this. It annoyed me as a barista and now it's really annoying as a customer. Totally different taste and temperature - plus, if you're measuring out of the shaker, half the time, it turns out incorrect.
Roseyy-Girl 2 points 1y ago
Half the time now I'll at least kinda swap them between the shaker and the cup so they do get cold. Plus my store has a thing for losing shakers or shaker tops so I tend to have problems finding one 😂 I'll keep the measurement thing in mind tho, thanks.

Sequencing is kinda dumb in my opinion. You wanna know how many times I’ve started pulling shots first? Thousands. You wanna know how many times it has made any difference at all? None. Figure out what works best for you and do it that way. Aside from some real assholes who should be ignored anyway no one cares as long as it’s going at a good pace. This company will always be pressuring us to go faster so it’s best to ignore that as well. You know who decides how fast we go? We do. We’re the ones doing the work.
