Man so I worked at Starbucks for the better part of a year. I was just wondering if my experience was normal.
So I get hired don't get trained at all. Get put on evening shifts where this guy I made friends with kind of taught me how to make drinks when he had time. For the most part I was just winging it honestly. My store manager who I don't think is a bad guy just incompetent and a little inconsiderate at times, sat in the corner of the store and watched us. If he wanted us to know something or bitch about something he would call over the shift and the shift would come talk to us. i always thought that was super rude. In the time I worked there we had the entire crew except for three people on morning shifts quit all around the same time. That happened twice. So the cycle would start over and I would start showing people how to do stuff I was never trained to do in the first place. Make drinks put orders in that kind of stuff. Witch isn't rocket science and I think I did it ok enough never really had any customers complain. All of the shift leaders I've ever worked for told me I did a good job they didn't have anything to complain about. Buy my store manager would pull me to the side and tell me shit like I need to move with a since of urgency. He also hated when we laughed. Like if we where joking or just talking to each other he would send some one over to tell us to "pick the pace up" regardless of what our times where. It was just really bizarre I've had a few jobs in the food industry and never ran into anything like my Starbucks experience. I do want to say that I'm in recovery and when I relapsed and went to treatment my store manager kept my job. We also did a formal Monday thing and when I told him I didn't have any formal clothes he gave me a bag full of nice polos I still own. I'm really grateful for everything they did for me. I was just miserable working there.

We’re all just in an abusive relationship with Starbucks. Just look out for your mental health. They will always demand more but you can and should only give what is healthy for you.

Yea that's exactly why I had to get away. Our store was closing at five for a while because we where severely short staffed. Only had one shift leader for a wile. We got another so he wanted to start opening back up at 8 and I reminded them about my availability because of counseling and aa meetings and they told me I needed to be available all the time. I work at a treatment center now couldn't be happier with it. Everyone there is super understanding and helpful.

Happy for you!

That’s pretty much how it always is. I lucked out and have a great SM, but we still encounter the same problems as what you’re describing. I’ve been with the company for 5 years and it just gets worse every year with the demands to go faster, and I’ve seen partners really hurt themselves when they try to rush. It’s not worth it.

No, this isn't normal. You should have been trained. Your manager was an incompetent micromanager who didn't bother to get out of his chair to talk to baristas one-on-one.

Precisely. Also, that whole having an issue with partners laughing is opposed to what Sbux encourages. They want that image of partners laughing, being content while also making customers laugh. This manager needs adequate training.

I'm sure he has some "if you're laughing, you're not working" mindset.
