Trying Drinks Before Launch(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by babyIoves
Is there a standard that we HAVE TO try every drink we come out with? A SSV told us at opening on Tuesday that we HAVE TO try all the new drinks, even if we can't have dairy or whatever. One barista can't have gluten so she was throwing up all day after trying the apple crisp macchiato :/

we're technically supposed to make, taste, and describe 1 or 2 before launch, but if you have allergies or dietary restrictions you should be able to either modify it if possible or if not, i assume you would make it but then read the recipe card for the taste description. either way, remember corporate policy states that you do not have to do anything that you feel is unsafe, so like other users said, definitely report your SSV
hellopie7102 points1y ago
Lmao, it's heavily suggested that you try the new drinks to be able to describe the flavors to customers but a shift cannot MAKE you ingest anything. They can only delegate tasks and manage how everyone treats each other.
lily-amber11 points1y ago
I try it if it looks good. If it’s nasty, i’m not trying it. I just use the descriptions of other baristas when i’m asked to describe it. Or go by what is most popular. You don’t have to try anything you don’t want to 😊
designated-grapes161 points1y ago
WHAT. THE. FUCK. If anyone told me to put taste testing/work before my health, I'll fight them on site. Jk. Maybe not. But I will definitely be having a word or three with my manager.
I can't have caffeine due to my meds and I'm lactose so nope. Nope. Nope. Nope.
OneRoseDark78 points1y ago
I know you mean "lactose intolerant" but I can't help imagining just a giant lactose molecule just blooping around in a starbucks apron.
designated-grapes34 points1y ago
Youre not wrong! Rude customers and constantly being understaffed does make me feel like a molecule just blooping around an an apron though. Haha
mollythewiz129 points1y ago
this is illegal lmao
Vilali114 points1y ago
No. Report this to your SM.
babyIoves [OP]35 points1y ago
I want to but my SM sucks :/ I know she probably was the one that told the SSV's to tell us that
francescugh80 points1y ago
report to your DM. 100%.
jShag20147 points1y ago
if she told your supervisor to do that then reality is she deserves to lose her job. talking to your DM would be doing the right thing.
mrsnataliehooper2 points1y ago
And if that doesnt work go to your RM. And probably notify ethics and compliance too!
carolineislaughing33 points1y ago
Look, it’s against my religion to drink coffee or tea, and I’m almost at my one year mark, and I’ve never had any of our product. The most I do is have a cream frap with the syrup just so I know what it tastes like.
mayovegan17 points1y ago
Yoooo same! My coworkers always think I'm crazy for working at a Starbucks when 99% of the menu is off the table for me. I do love my lemonades and steamed milk tho.
CS38836 points1y ago
Are you Mormon I take it? We used to have this group of young adults who came in I'm assuming after some thing they would do each week and get cream fraps and that was basically it. I personally just don't care for caffeine too much cause it doesn't do anything to me other than make me pee more! People think I'm weird for not liking coffee but I always tell them I'm here for a paycheck so 🤷🏽♀️🤣
Pies-in-the-Skies32 points1y ago
Go up the chain. If your SM isn’t listening, go to ethics or go to district. It is illegal to force someone to have the product, and extremely unethical and dangerous to force it. That SSV should be fired, or extremely reprimanded at the least.
sheep_heavenly25 points1y ago
No, and especially not if it'll harm you.
I encourage baristas that can't to at least give it a sniff, if safe OFC. Otherwise I describe it to them and tell them to either give the canned corporate flavor description or say "nah, can't/don't have, but my coworker says it's ___"
If your SM isn't helpful, call ethics and compliance.
bubb1eb4th15 points1y ago
in my experience we only have to try one of the different varieties of the new drinks. pick one out of the 3 for the apple crisp. my lead never makes us try all 3.

update: she had to be hospitalized and our SM is ignoring her texts about the situation
forlorn_folklorist16 points1y ago
She has every right to report the SSV to Corporate, as well as OSHA. In fact, she has a responsibility to do so, as outlined in the Partner Handbook.
babyIoves [OP]10 points1y ago
How would we go about reporting her to Corporate? Could I do it for her since I was there when it happened?
forlorn_folklorist6 points1y ago
Don't you have a thing in the back of your store on how to report workplace harassment? The number should be there. If not, use a Digital Incident Report Form.
babyIoves [OP]7 points1y ago
No 😳 Should we? We had a Ethics and Compliance thing where you take a card if you need it but my store is so bad that all the cards are gone
Ashamed_Equal1 points1y ago
Tell her to tell the doctors that she is in the hospital because of her work, and they will start processing their end of workers comp so that she’s not charged for the visit… she does have to do her part by notifying the right organization (Sedgwick for US, idk Canada)
130072713 points1y ago
No, but we have to be able to describe them. That’s why they give us the description on the recipe cards (you can also find the recipe cards on the iPads).
lewabwee10 points1y ago
Well you’re supposed to eventually have all of them but that’s not normally super enforced if at all. If you can describe them you’re fine and they provide you with descriptions and you can always just ask another barista who had it how’d they’d describe it. It’s definitely not enforced if you have dietary restrictions.
rudebii6 points1y ago
Really the goal is for you to be able to sell it and make it. As a trainer I focused on those things, and trained on how to describe and sell an item, then make it on bar.
I had partners get creative saying things like “oh, it’s just like X,” or “we’ll, if you like A/B/C I think you should try it.”
Real talk: I drank and preferred black coffee. Frappuccinos are an affront and an insult to my palate. I judge and mock caramel macchiato drinkers, still, after 2 decades off the job. None of that mattered because I can sell the shit out of the menu, and that’s what matters.
bopbopcity5 points1y ago
When a shift makes a claim that seems sus just tell them to show you the policy. It’s their burden of proof to find it and if they can’t, don’t do it.
JugglingDaleks4 points1y ago
Yeah you don't need a reason to choose not to. It doesn't matter why you're not, that's your choice!
recycledbottle3 points1y ago
I'm no longer a partner, but back when I was we were allowed to skip trying drinks/breakfast foods if it was something we had an allergy/dietary restriction on. If someone has a dairy/gluten allergy and isn't allowed to modify the drink but is being forced to drink it that sounds like a call to HR might be needed.
dthomp08063 points1y ago
Uh no. You don't have to try anything.
leopardsocks3 points1y ago
If you know you’re allergic to an ingredient, it’s up to you to advocate for yourself at that point.
YellowSphinx3 points1y ago
at my bux we would pick a couple that we Wanted to try. and share what we thought of the new drinks so that we could tell customers that way. Trying Everything? Now that’s just gross lol.
babyIoves [OP]1 points1y ago
omg hahahahaha
Shiva92 points1y ago
no, absurd
hammerkat6052 points1y ago
Nooo! When I went in for my coffee tasting they had a partner go over it with me. The SM is allergic to almost everything and can’t drink coffee. They reasonably accommodated her.
Also today I asked a barista what the sweet cream nitro is like and she honestly told me she didn’t know because she doesn’t drink dairy. Fair enough.
George7342 points1y ago
Everyone at my store has food allergies. Our boss just let us modify the drinks or skip them all together. I do have an amazing boss though. Sorry you have a dick as a boss.
babyIoves [OP]1 points1y ago
second update: she got written up for calling out after she was hospitalized
RosyEmmy1 points1y ago
What the fuck??? If she has a allergy, she definitely shouldn’t….wtf is wrong with that ssv.
star_pants1 points1y ago
As someone with allergies I will try what I can, but often heavily modified and usually not everything that comes out. You're expected to try it to have an idea, but you can't be forced to.
the1noir1 points1y ago
I don’t do what I don’t want to.
Pupusa_Seb1 points1y ago
Bullshit, I still have yet to try any of the drinks because ironically I’m not into coffee like that.
drinkliquidclocks1 points1y ago
Why didn't she just say no? Lol... Especially if she has an intolerance or allergy? That's just poor decision making 😭you can't get fired for not drinking something you don't like come on
babyIoves [OP]0 points1y ago
The barista didn't know it had wheat but the SSV was also really strict about it, she kept we HAD TO, no matter what and said it was because our DM said to do so

bompwa-1 points1y ago
You do have to, but there should be mods always for any dietary restrictions...that just makes sense so that when customers with restrictions come in a batista knows the taste
