"Hey! I appreciate you trying to help but I have my own system going so I'm okay! I really do appreciate you though! Oh, there's one thing you can help me with, can you check my milks, lids, and syrups and see if I need to be restocked? Thanks!"

Praise and gentle redirection 👏🏻

This is the right answer

I try to have this same response without sounding in any way annoyed that they want to learn & practice. It can be difficult during a rush but definite the way to go!

Dammit. You beat me to it

I’d ask them to help with the iced teas and refreshers to start- we were all green beans once, I felt it was helpful to start getting used to building beverages there
paigemclachlan 31 points 1y ago
Yes! Sandwich redirection in between compliments
TJW351 13 points 1y ago
The compliment sandwich
cs_phoenix 9 points 1y ago
Never understood that term. It should be called a criticism sandwich. You don’t call a ham sandwich a bread sandwich haha.
bigghostb00ty 8 points 1y ago
I always called it a shit sandwich but I’m very crass
TJW351 6 points 1y ago
I never thought about it that way, lol. I suppose you’re right!

I could tell you how baristas ask me to stop helping. It’s not polite but it’s effective. If you see them grab a sticker, say NOPE! Or I appreciate that you want to help but I’ll hand you a cup with the sticker and ask you to make it as needed so that I can stay on task. I get it I’m newer to helping at bar because I am register and ovens when it’s packed in the mornings. I’m getting more practice on bar in the later part of the day. Good luck.

I am polite about it usually but still cannot for the life of me get new partners who are NOT ON BAR ANYWAY to stop pulling a million stickers and leaving them strewn about my hot bar, no cups and no order. Or how to get someone who wants to "help" to not pick over orders coming in until they find something they like.

I tell them to swap me. Helps that I'm a shift so I can swap it up like that, but making them sift through their own bullshit mess really discourages it from happening again.

This is beautiful

You just give them easy drinks so they can get better and it’s one less drink for you to worry about.

Where are they planted? They need to do that role. If it’s DTR, they are desperate to get that bev from you and move that line. In that case DT bar needs to pay more attention to the immediate car and stop sequencing 4 bevs at a time. It’s annoying to have the beverages you need for cars 2, 3 and 4 but the car at the window has been sitting waiting 3 minutes for a basic iced espresso beverage

i work at a cafe only store 😀
FfierceLaw 3 points 1y ago
ok, then maybe they are bored? If I'm on front/warming (in my DT store) and I have some free seconds I brush and wipe and get the nasty crumby, cheesy area around the ovens spotless, I sanitize the front POSs, the iPads, the things that the customers put their cards into, contact CS and offer to make Pike, change a trash, make Grounds for Your Garden Bags. I find glass cleaner and a clean towel and clean the top of the case. Grab all the partially empty sleeves of lids that morning left everywhere and see if there's room for them in the stands on the counter, otherwise return to stock. This is only after I have pulled all the thawed pastries out of the BOH I have room for, same with thawed breakfast sandwiches, updated availability in the POS for all food. But it took me months to find out all the tasks I can do without getting yelled at because as a GB you feel like you can't do anything without getting rebuffed.

Enjoy that cafe while it lasts. If it's in urban density it'll catch a break. Out here where it's all cars there's no such thing

Oh oh! I think I have the solution to this!

When I first trained at Starbucks, I worked at a flawlessly managed store. Obviously green-bean needs to learn how to work bar, so maybe they can shadow you while you’re on bar? Like rotate them through the positions frequently during the shift, and when there’s a lull, have them shadow you on bar and get the feel of the flow and sequencing. Supervise them making drinks on bar so they can get the practice.

Being on bar is the most exciting thing about coming to work at Starbucks; and everyone is eager to get started making the drinks, we just need the practice to become competent.
