New Barista Trainer (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Accomplished-Claim94
I’m a new barista trainer and I’m supposed to train my first green bean tomorrow. But I don’t even know where to start. What should I begin with teaching them

Go onto the iPad and click the “train a barista” button in the store resources app. Then just go down the list and elaborate on each thing for them. I’ve been a trainer for 3 years and my trainees are amazing…I get borrowed out to go train at other stores often. I’m not special! It’s all because I use this method:

When we move to a new station, first I point out all the immediate safety hazards. This makes them feel safer as they know “ok if I’m not touching the hot water tap I’m not gonna get hurt”

Then, in as little words as possible I show them the routine, once, exactly as it needs to be done. (It’s in the app)

After I show them once I have them do it once. I let them mess up and I wait for them to ask for help. Let them struggle and work on that short term memory. It’s ok to make a mess.

Lastly, I do NOT tell them to memorize everything. Instead, I have them memorize *where* they can *find* everything. Brew cycle? Customer support cycle? Beverage routine?… you probably have posters in the store and if you don’t then get them real familiar with the iPad store resources. I make sure they understand “when someone hands you the timer, you begin the customer support cycle. Show me where you can find that”

Hope this helps

There should be a folder with all of the materials you’ll need! Personally I like to take each station (POS, bar, warming, etc) one day at a time. I always start my green beans on the register - once they learn the register they can learn warming, then bar, then customer support. Kinda like pieces of the puzzle is how I always approach it

they have a folder that your store manager should give to you. It gives you everything to teach the new partner. From cs to expresso bar to drive through.

Do you not have the barista basics binder and trainer guide? It walks you through everything and someone should have created a training schedule that you should follow.

No I only did the my learning thing, and my store manager is off on vacation for the entire week that I’m supposed to be training him

Oh no! I'm so sorry! I wish you the best of luck! Hopefully you can locate that binder before they get in!
