Does the "voluntary self-identify" for disability on the application impact hiring? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by It_is_Katy
Hi guys, I submitted my barista application yesterday, and I'm hoping I didn't shoot myself in the foot by saying "Yes, I have a disability." (I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a chronic pain disorder, just a few weeks ago, though I didn't elaborate on what exactly I have wrong with me.)

I'm actually really psyched to have applied, I'm 20, but it'll be my first "real" job after being my disabled mother's caregiver since I was 14. And my best friend since I was in pre-k is a partner at a different store who just put in a transfer request for the store I applied to because she moved recently. So if I get the job, we'll likely be working together soon. And fraps are what got me through high school, lmao.

Just very excited about the whole thing, and it wasn't until I was talking to my mom about it that she mentioned I might have screwed myself.

No, Starbucks is an actively inclusive company, and if anyone discriminates against you, go to their boss immediately.

That said, I am very happy for you, and I wish you the best!

That's what I thought! Especially the store I applied to, I think. I've been there a bunch of times and it seems like quite a diverse group of people that work there. From my present customer perspective (which is admittedly probably flawed), they're people I'd be excited to work with. So fingers crossed!

It didn't impact my hiring process when I started, and even if it did, that would've been illegal. They also are not allowed to ask what your disability is at the interview

That's good to hear! I know it's illegal, but major companies get away with illegal shit all the time, and they could easily chalk it up to me not having any formal work experience or not having the right availability or something like that. So I was still a bit concerned.

Side question, my friend suggested I go over there and ask to speak to a manager and introduce myself, but I'm not sure if I should or what I would say if I did?

Starbucks was my first job too, I did the self-identified disability thing and I was 18, fresh out of high school, so I think you should be okay?
As for meeting the manager, that's not a bad idea! I would just tell them that you put in an application online and you wanted to come in person and check out the store and meet the manager before any potential interviews! Sometimes it's hard to pinpoint when they'll be there but I know at my store, my manager is typically here in the morning to mid-late afternoon on weekdays. So between like 7 and 1, Monday thru Friday are your best bets for catching the manager in store

I always self identify for jobs in general and I’ve never had a problem with it.
