"Skipping" drinks on CBS (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ajspivey
Was working a 3-person bar today (me being the cold bar). And there were a couple of occasions where I was getting hollered at about drinks in drive thru not already being ready.

Does someone know/can point me in the right direction for how we are supposed to be sequencing drive through ahead of MOP and POS (by company standards)?

Because I am not aware of an appropriate company guideline for doing this.

Just like: I'm a six year partner who has represented our store at the championship five years running, and I do not know of any protocol that dictates you having more than two stickers pulled from your printer (where do you put them, how do you ensure you're getting back to them in a reasonable time, how does this not result in a buildup of your other two queues if you're getting a consistent number of drive cold drinks, etc.).

Idk, I just feel like I'm getting asked to violate the integrity of the drink sequencing. First ordered, should first served imho.

You are correct but the company puts too much emphasis on window times and drive thru productivity in general. There is no winning.

Coolsies, that's kinda 100% the answer I was looking for (cause internally I'm like "Yeah, no. I'm pretty sure I know what I'm supposed to be doing").

I feel seen and validated. Thoinks.

The best way to deal with this, I think, is when the person says at the drive thru ordering that they’re picking up a mobile, the dto person would say something like, “let me check if that’s ready for you” and then walks over to see if it’s ready. If it’s not, they tell the customer “we’re still working on that we’ll have it at the window” or something and then the dto person goes to pull the mobile stickers until they find the order they looking for. If the mobile barista is swamped, the dto person can give that sticker to their drive barista to complete. I feel ya on wanting to keep the sequencing in order, but it can throw off the whole flow of the drive thru

I agree with this except it doesn’t always make sense to go and pull that specific mobile order out because Jane decided to place her mobile right as soon as she pulled up to the speaker (why do people do this??) and 5 other people and some deliveries are ahead, like, chances are we’re gonna lose some of those other stickers or they’re going to fall on the ground / get way out of order stuck all over the place. I don’t like when partners come over and start pulling stickers left and right looking for *one* drink they just took the order for like I get it but can’t you just make it, I bet you remember what it was 😰

And I do totally get that! I honestly wish we had a place for customers to like “pull forward” and then we could bring it to them later for a situation like this.

*Thank you*
It really irks me to have sequencing down and I’m honestly doing pretty good switching back and forth between making DT and mobiles and then someone comes over and is like here let me overload you and pull all these stickers… like please only pull what you’re gonna 100% finish 😫 anyway sometimes we *do* make people pull forward… not as often as I’d like but when people wanna be ridiculous and order a traveler and 10 sandwiches we’re like yeah you’re gonna need to pull forward buddy.

I agree with you there. I just don't think pulling more stickers than you are actively working on is a good idea.

Like sure, if someone is asking about their order I care cause they are a valued customer. But also, I'm not going to disrespect the value of other people's orders by letting that person cut in queue.

exactly it’s like people think they are literally the only person in the world placing a mobile order 😥

Sorry for the confusion: I'm not talking about mobile orders that are getting picked up at drive-thru, I'm talking about drive-thru orders that are behind Cafe and mobile orders (in terms of queue) on cold bar.

Not sure if you've got this setup, but we have three printers on bar (Drive-thru hot drinks, Cafe&MOP hot drinks, and then the third one prints Drive-thru&Cafe&MOP cold drinks).

So you'll have a situation where you've got two cold-brews for mobile, then two shaken drinks for lobby, then two Fraps for drive. So then drive thru will be like: "Hey, where are my fraps?" And I'll be like: "I'm making the drinks in the order there coming in. Idk what you want from me."

Ahhh. Yes. This is a problem with no good solution. At my store we decided not to reroute the printers this way and keep drive thru and cafe/mobile separate. We do utilize cold bar baristas, but we just separate the stickers ourselves, if that makes sense.

The way my manager says to do it is:
Two drive thru drinks then cafe or mobile.
But this is only during peak. After, go back to first ordered first made:
