“silent” baristas? (self.starbucksbaristas)

we have a lot of partners who help out at my store tell us we’re quiet. not in a rude way, but in a way of “you guys don’t talk to each other unless absolutely necessary”

i mean, on the extremely rare occasion we have 5 minutes of downtime we talk. otherwise we just focus on our jobs because our store is far too busy to be sitting around chatting to each other. we’re also very stressed the whole time and talking leads to talking shit and bickering (and not playfully) in front of customers so we all stay pretty quiet to avoid write ups lol. we DO get along, heck, i just got home from going out to dinner with 5 of my coworkers before writing this post

Do you wear headsets? That’s where our talking takes place, commenting on an order in progress, confirming food is in stock. Laugh together, it’s light and good most days

we’ve only got 2 😬😬 they’re all broken. even when we had multiple for everyone i would turn the volume way low (unless i’m taking orders), hearing the headset + blenders + a million people talking was an instant migraine and stressful because so many things are happening

I get the biggest kick out of certain partners on DTO, they crack me up every time 😆

same!!! some people are funny asf, but damn if they aren’t loud 😂

Maybe they just mean communicating with drinks being made? I have a green bean that doesn’t talk much when they are making drinks and sometimes they try to do stuff on an order that’s already been done. If drinks are being done correctly and stuff I don’t see the problem!

just casual conversation, like talking about your weekend and such. we’re all just a bunch of anxious introverts at my store and there’s just more peace when we stay quiet 😅 don’t be fooled though because on a REALLY good day it’s absolutely chaotic energy

i experienced something similar to this today. i went and helped out at another store. and i found them all to be very quiet. it’s just odd to come across if at your store you’re all very talkative even when working. my team is very talkative while we work so you get into the swing of doing that

so I was like this when I worked at starbucks. At my location, there were some pretty firmly developed friend groups (or at least i thought there were) and i never felt like I was a part of them. I would hear them talking about hanging out together after work or the party they went to the night before, but I wasn’t invited to anything until my last week at the store. Just a thought, they may feel excluded or shy if you guys all have firm friend groups.

maybe that’s what it is ☹️ we always try to be super welcoming with borrowed partners and our own regardless of established friend groups

I’m sure you are! Sorry, I’m not trying to imply that you guys are mean or indifferent or exclusive, but for shy people like me, I just assume people don’t like me or want to hang out unless they ask. It’s a self confidence thing. You could literally be the nicest person in the world and I will assume you hate me unless you ask if I want to hang out!

me too haha! i totally get it. it’s so hard for me to walk up to people and befriend them, but i also know how it feels to help out at another store and have nobody talk to me for 8 hours straight 😬
