Covid Coach (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Codyskank
I’m sure it’s different everywhere but in my area, from what I can tell, barely anyone even temps in anymore and no one ever really did the Covid coach. Just found out the Covid coach tells you not to work if you are showing even one minor symptom right now. So many people are working right now who shouldn’t be and it’s because Starbucks refuses to follow their own protocols. I know managers will make up excuses to get people to work no matter what and it’s horrible. Please take care of yourself, do the Covid coach, and don’t be gaslit.

Much earlier covid when I had a non-covid respiratory infection:

Me: Hm, I’m having respiratory problems and if I think it’s not my asthma, I fail the covid coach. But arguably could be my mild asthma.

Doctor: It isn’t your asthma. Go get a covid test.

Manager: It could be your asthma right? Just click that option on the covid coach and you pass.

I liked the idea of the covid coach, but it just requires so many levels of management to care / validate / not try and gaslight people.
Codyskank [OP] 26 points 1y ago
Yeah and I want to say just go home anyway regardless of what management is saying because that’s policy but obviously they can find ways to get rid of you or reduce hours or some other bullshit that will make life impossible. Super fun. Super super fun.

It also puts so much weight on the barista to be a doctor and take the fall if they make a wrong call. Is it allergies or a symptom? Is it asthma or covid? Is it a normal dehydration headache or an unexplained headache? I got so much flack for going in because it was acting like my asthma, but three hours later it wasn’t. “Didn’t you do the covid coach when you got in?!”

Like even if they don’t cut hours or anything the amount of shade they can throw at you is ridiculous.

Retaliation is not allowed, but who knows how well that is enforced.
maemac 47 points 1y ago
Oh if I have so much as a single symptom I’m keeping my ass home and I don’t need a COVID coach checklist or even my manager to tell me different 😂
Codyskank [OP] 10 points 1y ago
I’m with you!
PastelPinkStrawberry 42 points 1y ago
I was directly exposed for a few hours but because I had my first shot of the vaccine and no symptoms I was told to still come in and that I dont have to get tested. The covid coach is just so they can say they have policies in place
philosopher_cat_lady 4 points 1y ago
I would have gotten tested anyway (not that I'm claiming that you didn't). We have to be our own advocates for our health and other people's.
acertwo 30 points 1y ago
I did the COVID coach originally but after hundreds of times, what’s the point anymore? If I have a symptom, I’ll call in sick.
philosopher_cat_lady 3 points 1y ago
Yeah, I soon started to remember the questions by heart
deesarrachi 26 points 1y ago
According to the thermometer at work, I've been dead for at least four hours every time I clock in, and the covid coach app stopped working about a week after it was installed on the ipads 😔 it's absolutely so sbux can say they're doing something, regardless of if it's helpful vs performative safety theatre.
jklmnopedy 4 points 1y ago
SAME. The only time it approaches anywhere *near * a living person's temperature is when we're by the ovens.
Wonderful_Nightmare 14 points 1y ago
Yeah my manager gets super upset/angry anytime anyone does the covid coach and it says they have to go. Its basically workplace harassment
philosopher_cat_lady 2 points 1y ago
I can understand being frustrated, but who they should be frustrated at is \*corporate\*, not the barista for being a responsible human being. \*Corporate\* keeps our stores so minimally staffed that all hell breaks loose if ONE person calls out.
AnimeStanleyKubrick 10 points 1y ago
Before I walked out, our store had you do the COVID coach...but then never let you go home if you failed. So, what's the point?
shinymutt 8 points 1y ago
Our thermometer regular temps us at 88-94f so like, if someone actually has a fever we wouldn't know it.
sammiipiie 4 points 1y ago
The only time that thermometer has read me at a living person temp was when I came in after my second shot and had the fever that comes along with getting it 🙃🙃
shinymutt 2 points 1y ago
I temped at 99 after my second vax and my manager said to "give it ten minutes" and check again lol... by then I had body aches and was shivering uncontrollably
bryceofswadia 8 points 1y ago
I dont do the temp check because 1. our thermometer doesn’t even work and 2. it was determined months ago that temperature checks are not accurate determinants if someone has COVID or not.
philosopher_cat_lady 1 points 1y ago
Yeah, if your store thermometer doesn't work, you're supposed to just ascertain if you're feeling feverish at that moment. We're also supposed to do regular temperature checks at home. (I wonder if there's any barista anywhere who actually does that.)

my dm and manager filled out covid coach for me the other day telling me i was clear to come in after getting exposed with a confirmed positive test and i went in filled it out myself and failed on the second question it’s just frustrating especially when it’s only being used to try and keep us working
philosopher_cat_lady 2 points 1y ago
One time my manager just straight up misinterpreted one of the questions. I didn't bother to argue with her, as I felt like I wasn't at risk of having COVID. (I experienced side effects of my vaccine for longer than 72 hours.)
TyrannicalKitty 7 points 1y ago
I'm working with minor COVID symptoms right now but that's because I can't afford to quarantine ten days, my grocery store won't pay us. I got no sick time either. I have bills to pay but I'm wearing my mask religiously. I know it's just my annual head cold I get near autumn. If I develop a fever I'll quarantine. Manager is aware.
AuntieRia1128 5 points 1y ago
Covid coach and “temping in” are nice ideas, not really practical though, and not super great ways of
Monitoring symptoms… I worked for 3 full days with covid, cause I had no idea it was Covid. I had no temp and no respiratory issues in the beginning, the pollen in my area was Super bad so I just thought the sore throat was from that… I did do the Covid coach but a sore throat wasn’t enough to have me go home and I didn’t have a temp, so I had to stay. And then my boss was mad at me for staying… but I was like- “I passed the Covid coach!” And she couldn’t argue with that… 😬
philosopher_cat_lady 4 points 1y ago
If we followed the COVID Coach to a tee, our understaffing problem would be so much worse than it already is. In my humble opinion, I think there's room for common sense here. One day I had a mildly sore throat. The COVID Coach told me not to work. My manager was like, "You can work. It's springtime right now. Your sore throat could be from breathing in all the pollen's that been in the air lately." I also worked when my vaccine side effects lasted longer than 72 hours. I worked another time when I had caught a cold. I ended up testing negative for COVID. Now, of course, there's nothing wrong with following the COVID Coach. But if Starbucks wants us to, they need to fully staff our stores. And they aren't.
jklmnopedy 4 points 1y ago
And now that they've taken away isolation pay, how are people supposed to earn a paycheck? Not everyone has sick time saved, especially when you consider how many green beans there are.
philosopher_cat_lady 3 points 1y ago
Yeah, the one thing about this that gives me a feeling of hope is that if you follow the COVID precautions all the time and limit how many people you visit/hang out with, your chance of catching COVID will be low. I follow all the precautions and don't do much socializing in person, so it's rare that my answer to any of the COVID Coach questions raises a concern. The one time I got sick was when I hadn't been wearing a mask at work, during that short amount of time vaccinated baristas were allowed not to. The one barista at our store who has to self-isolate all the time is the one who refuses to get vaccinated.
TylerJ716 3 points 1y ago
Ever since I transfered to my current store, I haven't really done my temperature. My old store I would have to have my shift look at it but we're so busy when I come in no one cares they just want me to fill it out and they will lsign it before the last shift leaves
ohamilkshake 3 points 1y ago
i've and my coworkers have literally never done it. the only time i've seen it done in my store was by our dm when he came for a visit
Klaus_Unechtname 3 points 1y ago
My second week I got a cold. Got tested immediately m, tested negative. Still came into work sick. Covid coach said go home but I ignored it because the managers seldom check if you did it not do they care because finding coverage sucks 😬😬
esaeklsg 8 points 1y ago
Unless something's changed, it used to take a couple days from symptoms showing for covid tests to be accurate with any reliability. The turn around time for the covid tests themselves to process have sped up I think, but I don't know if the initial time for your body to make the antibodies or w/e can be accounted for. It used to take what, like 2-5 days to show positive on the tests? If that's true getting tested immediately isn't really worth much of anything.
Klaus_Unechtname 2 points 1y ago
More specifically, I tested as soon as I knew my symptoms were more than allergies, and then I took a second covid test to confirm the negative results of the first one.
Regardless, my point is that it might not be easy for a green bean to say “hey this covid coach thing is saying to go home” when the SSV wants you to be on the floor already.
philosopher_cat_lady 2 points 1y ago
That green bean would do well to stand up for themselves. I've done it several times. I'm not taking shit at my workplace.
omgtee 2 points 1y ago
Had a few partners quarantine after they contracted covid or a household member did and no one else was told…. The store just kept running and the schedules were tweaked…
wildaloofrebel55 2 points 1y ago
I think Covid coach is hilarious. Who are these mofos that can function with a fever?? I’ve had exactly one fever as an adult and I could barely move. Trust me, if I have any of those symptoms or a fever, I’m NOT at work. Any normal adult would be in bed, watching Tik Toks and drifting in and out of consciousness.
