I'm a fairly new starbucks barista, who is fortunate to have a large savings and a second job as my primary sourse of income (starbucks is just to fast-track my savings for a move I'm making sometime next year), so I'm not desperate for money.
On Friday my brother (one of five people I live with) tested positive for Covid. Obviously, I informed my manager of this.
My manager said as long as I social distance from my brother, get a negative covid test, and don't show symptoms, I can come into work.
After a few days thought and a negative test, I responded to him to say I would take the week off and moniter symptoms. I don't feel it's wise to go back to work when I live with someone covid positive. It's further complicated by the fact that I'm not vaccinated (for religious reasons). I realized that by not being vaccinated, I'd have to make sacrifices to keep those around me safe, and I feel like this is one of them.
My manager hasn't responded yet, and I kind of feel like he's upset. It's making me second-guess myself. Did I make the right choice, or should I go in?

You are correct. I’m pretty sure if you are exposed and unvaccinated you are actually required to isolate for 10 days. I’d give partner resources a call and check!

Thanks. That's what I thought, I just needed to hear it from somewhere else to know I wasn't crazy.

Hope you stay safe!
Askandanswerquestion [OP]6 points1y ago
Thanks! Believe me, I do too.

And you should be paid during those 10 days i believe, so make sure you check on that too!

as a partner living with immune compromised people, i would be very upset if one of my unvaxxed coworkers came in after being in close contact with a positive case. Fortunately my manager is very understanding, but you should do what you know is right, and think about the partners you work with.

Good to hear. This is exactly what was going through my mind, but it seemed so weird to me that my manager wanted me to come back to the store that I wondered if I was missing something. Good to hear my thoughts affirmed.
burntbeancrock5 points1y ago
yeah, good luck!! I hope you don’t have any issues with him, stay safe!
Askandanswerquestion [OP]2 points1y ago
Thanks! I hope I have no issues either.

You're right not to come in I don't know what your boss is thinking and they could be fired if corporate found out about him telling workers who have had close contact to come in anyways.
Literally on the covid check it, if you click yes to having close contact with a covid positive person it says you need to isolate for 10 days.

Thanks! I'm glad to hear you're as confused by my boss as I am. Our store just cracked down on making sure we used the covid check, so I've literally done it only 2 times since working here (I didn't even know it existed before then), so I was struggling to remember what was on it.
Our store has had problems with how management deals with Covid, so luckily that helped me take a more sceptical approach to his advice about covid to begin with. I'm usually big on doing what I'm told, but this time it stuck little alarm bells in my head of something's not right.
Thanks for being a sanity check!

Sounds like your DM isn't doing their job either then. The check in process is a legal document and Starbucks may potentially have to use it in the future for liability purposes. I've known of several managers being let go because they failed to hold that documentation to standard.
Anyways, hope you are doing well.

I personally think that since you won't get vaccinated, you shouldn't work with the public.

I think that since you refuse to get vaccinated, you shouldn't be allowed to work with the public.

Your manager is dead wrong. My whole house got it and I remained isolated as much as I could from them, and a week after they tested negative is when I tested positive. Definitely do not take the risk of going in to work.
Wonderful_Nightmare13 points1y ago
Stay home if you're unvaccinated and living with someone with covid. Do your part to protect your coworkers and customers. Let your manager figure it out, it's their job.
RexFlex4205 points1y ago
You are 100% right. You are taking steps to protect your partners and customers

My fellow shift was living with her partners grandma that tested positive, she had to isolate herself from the store for 10 days, minimum.

Your boss is trying to give you the run around and put others safety at risk just so they won’t be down a person, I’ve seen this situation first hand with my own manager. You know what’s right, and if your boss has a problem with you wanting to do what’s right and stay home for a little over a week, I would call your boss’s boss.
heartashley3 points1y ago
This is the right thing to do. Do they expect you to have a negative test before every shift? It's impractical. Take the time off and monitor both yours and your brothers symptoms to see when you can go back.

Honestly everyone is quitting. The stores are closing and severely understaffed right now. Do you.
