Inconsistent SSVs (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Klaus_Unechtname
I’m still pretty new and I’ve found that some SSVs will get upsetti if you take the time to do things to standard because it wastes time, but then as soon as you start cutting corners a different SSV will tell you to do it to standard 😂

It’s a little frustrating. I’d like to just do everything to standard but this job is very unforgiving to the green beans, learning everything for the first time.

From experience, I'd just do what you are comfortable with and if going by the standard makes you comfortable then I'd do that ! Do be afraid to stand up to that SSV that you're comfortable with the standard and you don't want to cut corners.

This is fair. They can’t be mad for literally following directions.

I just noticed I made a typo and that is definitely don't be afraid to follow standard !! They truly can't justify being upset with you for following standards especially when other SSV's are encouraging it. You could even let those SSV's know about that specific one not following standard or let your GM know

Mostly I’m a very greenish bean and I need to make sure I /do/ understand what standard is

That's what Starbucks is like. I've been told contradictory instructions countless times. You learn the preferences of your different shift supervisors, and you learn to use your best judgment.

Is there any recourse with people like that or are the store managers the only ones we can talk to?

Just as expected from a company of inconsistencies.
Figure out your shit and stick to it, Starbucks.

So the way I've seen it done is druing peak hours and when we have extra people things are usually to standard but as a closer I don't mind when things get shortened a bit.

Unfortunately there are, in effect, different types of rules, especially with a company like Starbucks.

Following standard is a rule for example but so are time constraints, whether those constraints be window times or getting these tasks done by a certain time etc. Different stores and different supervisors will have different focuses, because some of these rules like drink quality and window times are explicitly contradictory, but that can be really difficult for baristas. I usually try to let people do their own thing as much as possible because having to follow different sets of rules when different people are there is hard but that’s just me.
