Shots for pumps?! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by AuntieRia1128
A lady today ordered a Venti mocha Frap and asked for us to sub the pumps of Frap for shots of espresso! So she wanted 4 shots of espresso, and she expected us to sub it so she didn’t have to pay the .90 a shot for them! Am I wrong in thinking that this is not allowed and that we have every right to charge her for each shot, in fact wouldn’t I get in trouble if I had subbed it like she asked? 1 pump of Frap does not equal the same amount of an entire shot, it also isn’t even close to the same quality of coffee!!!

What are all of your thoughts? Have you ever had anyone ask for this or something similar? How did you handle it?

Ps. My shift told me to give it to her and to let her know it was Only this time, I didn’t feel right doing it, but I couldn’t refuse my shift… so this lady got $4 of free espresso!

Yeah no that's not how that works at all
FfierceLaw 62 points 1y ago
You can “sub” but she still has to pay for every shot. To me “sub” means no frap roast but use the shots she paid for, sub does not take away the upcharge
truecrimeANDchill 26 points 1y ago
You can substitute shots for frap roast (1,2,2) but any additional on top of that should be charged
[deleted] 8 points 1y ago
i thought it was 1,2,3, since a venti frap would presumably follow iced venti rules?
cadmus1890 5 points 1y ago
Where is the 1,2,2 coming from?
krty98 3 points 1y ago
2 shots of espresso is a lot more liquid than even 4 pumps of frap roast. I honestly would just sub it all for 1 shot and it would equal out. The hot espresso already melts the ice and makes it weird with only one
cadmus1890 3 points 1y ago
The standard is 1-2-3 for decaf Frappuccino beverages.

Well damn. I can admit when I’m wrong. I was trained 1/2/2 but I just looked it up and it’s actually 1/2/3. So in this case she should have only had to pay for one extra shot.
couchpillowmuppet 1 points 1y ago
This is news to me as well. I was trained to do one for all sizes.
ItzBoogieMan 26 points 1y ago
I mean I substitute 2 shots for a grande and venti and if they want more I charge it
BabySteele 1 points 1y ago
Same. We use to have a regular that just preferred esp to the frapp roast and only wanted 1 shot in it
venturealoha 7 points 1y ago
Doesn’t make it correct. Shots still an extra charge.
BabySteele 5 points 1y ago
Another way to think of it, if someone asked for a decaf frapp, would you charge them for the decay espresso shots?
GreenBean518161 5 points 1y ago
Decaf frapps default to decaf espresso though, there is no other decaf option. I say they'd get charged for the 4 shots.
BabySteele 1 points 1y ago
But we're substituting a single shot for the frapp roast. To the customer that doesnt make sense to charge almost a dollar just to sub a different type of coffee
couchpillowmuppet 2 points 1y ago
But the “different type of coffee” has a console you diff quality. Espresso is a more expensive type of coffee. It doesn’t matter if it “makes sense” to the customer. If they don’t like the upcharge, they can get frap roast.
venturealoha 1 points 1y ago
Another way to think of it is why wouldn’t they just order a espresso Frappuccino and ask for no frap roast?
hmmyeahrightokaythen 26 points 1y ago
I mean I understand her not wanting to pay $10 for a frap that has espresso instead of frap roast but at the same time like that’s what the recipe calls for so if you want to change it, then you gotta pay for what you want idk what else to tell ya 🤷🏼‍♀️

Idk I know we’re supposed to ‘make the moment right’ but that sounds like too big of a difference to let someone off the hook for imo 😬
paintthatface 11 points 1y ago
To be fair is that not what we do for decaf fraps? So what’s the difference?
AuntieRia1128 [OP] 11 points 1y ago
Yeah, the only Frap that gets only 1 shot is the espresso Frap which gets one shot And Frap roast… but I do believe for a decaf Frap its 1, 2, 3… I was going to suggest that we do 2 shots cause I thought that would be closest to the same amount of coffee, but my shift made the call that they did and I couldn’t refute it.
Kamp1ing -4 points 1y ago
Decaf Fraps always get 1 decaf shot in pace of frap roast, as far as I've been told. So swapping 4 frap roast for 4 shots is way more than the standard 1 shot for a decaf frap.
paintthatface 10 points 1y ago
That’s definitely not right. It’s supposed to be 1,2,3. The coffee taste/proportions would be totally off if you only did one shot for a venti.
I agree that 4 espresso shots is excessive since the caffeine content is way different that 4 pumps of frap roast but my point was it’s not really a huge deal considering what the correct shots for decaf fraps get.
UncleJeffe -1 points 1y ago
It's 1/2/2 for decaf shots!
kqs13 7 points 1y ago
It's 1/2/3 for t/g/v decaf fraps
drinkliquidclocks 6 points 1y ago
It's always been 1/2/3 at my store for decaf
kell0313 10 points 1y ago
I would tell them that we don’t have a way to ring it up and cannot account for it in our inventory system if we just give it away.
somatic_yo 9 points 1y ago
“I would like an ice cold water but please sub the entire drink with a Venti white mocha Frappuccino. “
Jew_3 4 points 1y ago
With extra caramel drizzle and vanilla sweet cream cold foam.
AuntieRia1128 [OP] 5 points 1y ago
I was going to suggest that we do 2 shots cause I thought that would be closest to the same amount of coffee, but my shift made the call that they did and I couldn’t refute it.
JeanLucPicardsAss 3 points 1y ago
I'd have charged her a creme frap with espresso shots in it
UncleJeffe 3 points 1y ago
The best you should do for them is charge them for the frap + 2 shots, if they want a quad instead of FR. Technically we're supposed to charge them +4 shots, but if you wanna meet them halfway, have them pay for 2 shots.

They're nowhere near equivalent, but I get their logic, which is wrong.

FR pumps are like 15-20mg of caffeine and espresso is like 75mg? If someone orders a venti decaf coffee frap we don't charge extra cuz they get 2 espresso shots. The recipe for that is 1/2/2 for shots, so it would make sense that we should charge for more than 2 shots if we sub FR for espresso
sweet-seat 2 points 1y ago
i had a woman that wanted a venti hot mocha, only one shot. wanted the extra shot added into her second drink for free since she "didn't use it in her mocha." -- that really sent me on a spiral because her logic made sense but it wasn't right
jessayadams 2 points 1y ago
Just had a similar instance at my store and my sm looked into it. We can't sub shots for a frappuccino unless it's decaf if the prefer the espresso over the frap roast it's an automatic charge.
Saradigm 2 points 1y ago
Frap roast is practically like a sauce, it’s not the same
bliss1029 1 points 1y ago
Nope, charge her!

That’s not how that works. You’re suppose to charged them for any additional items that normally isn’t on it
sydbey_ 0 points 1y ago
My shift tells me that we don’t charge when people do shots of espresso instead of frap roast. I thought it was surprising but.. we have a few regulars that get venti frappuccinos with blonde espresso (3 shots) instead of frap roast and every time my shift is like ok - remember don’t charge for that
drinkliquidclocks -3 points 1y ago
Yeah my store does that, but you have to get one or the other. I don't see why not? That's always been standard at our store and lots of customers get it including myself. Why would she pay extra if she isn't getting frap roast? Also why do you care so much it's not coming out of your paycheck babe
nickypng 3 points 1y ago
I agreed with you until the last sentence...It's just the principle of not letting any customer order whatever they want without question. Then they'd be getting iced lattes for the price of plain espresso, etc...

The standard USED to be to use espresso in fraps (before frap roast), and when out of frap roast the sub is espresso, at least when I was working. We had people that subbed espresso, and it was all by the book. No need to charge extra when it's a 1:1 substitute.
