Need opinion urgently (self.starbucksbaristas)

Hi guys. I work at a tarbucks and am the TL there and today we received the Halloween cups. I have the day off but I told my manager not to release them if we received them because usually we have a Halloween launch mid September. He still released them and I was told right now. I messaged my DM and he said not to since we would get the launch date next week on the weekly update. I confronted my manager and their response was that they’re the manager and they can make business decisions. That our DM failed by not informing us and that we would have an office meeting just the two of us next time I clock in.

But I’m upset cause he didn’t need the DM to step in. I knew we shouldn’t release the cups till we had more information and he said there wasn’t anything explicitly stated about a new launch in the addendum. And ugh! I’m just so mad. He went over my head even when I told him so many weeks prior that I’d we ever the the cups when I don’t work not too release them. Who is in the right here? I’m already expecting to be reprimanded for ratting him out to DM.

There are times when you have to let shit go. He’s above you and he effed it all up. Not your circus, not your monkeys. You don’t get paid enough to make it your responsibility lol. As irritating as it is, sometimes you just have to shake your head and let them look dumb.

Yeah you’re right. It just makes my title of Starbucks team lead feel redundant when they don’t even tell me when we hire new people, when they schedule them for training, or when they make Starbucks decisions without informing me first. I guess the reason that I’m mainly upset is cause I had instructed my team that if anyone asked for the launch it was probably gonna be mid September and now I feel like I lost the trust of my community. :(

You told him. He chose to ignore it. Technically, he went above your head because he also is above your head, if that makes sense. Let it go.

He was wrong and should have known not to release the merchandise. As a former Food Service TL at Target I got the information way before the merchandise.

Or it could be the ETL or SD wanted it out for a sales boost or whatever. You don’t know.

Our sales are already boosted which is why I don’t understand his approach. We’re making too much in sales for the staff we’re given and we’re all burned out. I keep fighting for them about the schedule and they keep threatening me about it. Just cause they saw my baristas talk for a minute they tell me they’ll take away my hours cause they’re not being productive.

He wants a meeting with me because I messaged him that I had told him so many times not to put them up. But yeah I’m just gonna let it go. If anything I’ll message my DM about what happens in meeting because he’s the only one that cares. My ETL hates my DM and he hates that our DM is forcing them to use 90% of our payroll. We were being given only 40%.

Sorry, I just reread your post and I now see that you are the TL. Yes, it’s sooo hard being the one between the team and the higher-ups that make decisions, and trying to keep things in stock when they’re not sent but people stop believing that you ordered what you need, etc.
18 years at Target and Starbucks was a huge part of why I left. There were many reasons, of course, and sometimes Starbucks could be so fun. But trying to run 4 food departments with Starbucks taking so much time, attention, and energy made me feel guilty for leaving the other 3 departments to get along on their own. And even before they were all combined, every Starbucks TL our store ever had left the company, either voluntarily or not. So I really knew I was doomed, set up for failure. But I tried.

So this is long and rambling, but keep your head up. Document all conversations with your ETL, maybe email him about launch dates and such, so you can show that you had a plan and that he chose to disregard it. Your Starbucks DM sounds like a good one, maybe your Food BP can help, too. Ours really did, as far as getting most of the payroll we were supposed to and having realistic expectations as far as how much time it takes for cleaning tasks + guest service, etc.
Good luck to you. It’s really hard right now (or so I read) but take care of yourself and your team as much as you can.

As the manager, he should know not to release cups before their release date, whether or not you told him. As someone else said, just let it go and let him look dumb.

He’s not even supposed to be my manager. I’m the manager of Starbucks but I’m target there’s a manager above me. He’s the above manager for the front lanes not good but since it’s near the front lanes they have it to him. I’m the only one who keeps track of Starbucks and I had told him so many times to wait if we ever got the cups. He wants a meeting with me because I messaged him that my Sbux DM said not to release them and that I had told him not to several times. He told me he’s the ETL and he’s in charge of making business decisions. I’m probably gonna get reprimanded but I felt so sad and mad because I had told guests that asked that we’ll get more information on new launch mid September.
