Two days in and I already feel done… will it actually get better? (self.starbucksbaristas)

My first day was Wednesday and it was an absolute shit show. I work at a pretty high volume store and in my city there are only a handful of stores with a drive thru, mine is one of them.

I got basically 0 training. I was supposed to shadow my trainer and they just kinda dropped me. I guess they had a bad headache and some accompanying nausea so I don’t really fault them completely?

We had a call out and were understaffed. They put me on register and food. I didn’t have anyone show me how to use the register so I was stumbling through trying to figure it out on my own, while also making all the food for mobile, cafe, and running it down to the drive thru.

They gave me a headset but didn’t tell me how to use it and I got yelled at for not answering the person on drive thru (I really thought I did answer her lol). I got yelled at for not bringing food to the drive thru fast enough. I got yelled at by a customer for being so slow on the register. I fucked up a couple of sandwiches because I’m clumsy as hell with the warmer and I was panicking and rushing. I ended up working OT because the shift made me do the coffee before I left, which I ended up having to redo because I fucked it up because no one showed me how to do it.

Day 2 was more staffed and I at least was not thrown to the wolves? Mostly I got barked at to go fetch things from the back and chastised when it took too long to retrieve. In addition to me not knowing where anything is in the back room, the weekly order had come in the night before and been stacked haphazardly, ceiling high, all over. You could barely squeeze between boxes to move around, and the boxes were covering the shelves with cups and lids.

TL;DR my first two days were an absolute shit show, and I already want to quit. Is it ever going to get better?

fellow green bean here: give it like 2 weeks, if you’re feeling too overwhelmed after settling in then yes quit. with time it does get a ton easier and becomes almost second nature when you get the hang of things :) you got this!!

I’m about a week and a half in. I’m still at the point where, when I’m not there, I don’t want to go, but the past few days I’ve left thinking to myself “you know, I actually didn’t hate that.” Especially yesterday, when I actually got to be on bar for the first time, something I was excited to try but our store is so high-volume we had zero opportunities to train me. I spent the first hour yesterday on register and already wanted to go home because a combination of loud store and quiet customers had me asking every person to repeat themselves and it just was frustrating all around.
Honestly being on bar changed my day around. Sure, I was asking for the step-by-step for basically every drink besides refreshers, but I at least found something that I actually like.

Hi! Everyone's first few days (and sometimes first few weeks) are pretty awful, but especially now that you didnt get proper training, it's a hundred times worse for you and I am SO sorry... I really hope your team will be willing to help you learn in your trainer's absence. Talk to your store manager about this lack of support. I had a substitute trainer in my own trainer's absence when I was a green bean! This could be an option for you if you talk to your SM.

All this job requires is experience/practice. The more you work, the more times you complete certain tasks, the easier it gets. Eventually you'll go into work one day feeling like a barista, and trust me, that feeling is worth the couple months of struggling.

You got this. ♡
