What I was told when I came into work. With depression. Apparently it's that easy. Why didn't I think of that. I should have just turned it off. Amazing.

Starbucks fukin sucks. Fuk this job
stepfatherels68 points1y ago
I’ve learned to just make an entirely new personality at work. All the way til I get to work I’m depressed and literally want to quit on the spot but once I go in I just dissociate.
HollowRibcage40 points1y ago
Literally disassociation is the only thing that’ll get me through my day at work sometimes
MonstrousGiggling10 points1y ago
Duuude literally. Its like I put my body on autopilot and my mind is 100ft above me in the air. Too much shit going on.

Yup all my past jobs told me this. It's capitalism. We don't stop being human when we clock in to do under compensated labor <3
cdog14119 points1y ago
That's shitty.

I hate this. One of my baristas is battling depression very bad right now, and my DM came in and told me the “vibe” in my store was off and my partner(mentioned above) “didnt even say hi to her.” When I explained she’s going through a tough time, my DM’s response was “well at the end of the day we have a business to run, and if you can’t even say hi-this isn’t the job for you.” When I tell you I went off…I put my job in jeopardy. I was shocked. And I’d do it again. I’ve been with this company 10 years and we are not who we used to be. It’s super sad and I try my best to make it worth it for the partners. But when upper leadership only cares about numbers (and pretends to care about partners to cover their ass) it makes it so hard on everyone. I’m sorry you were told this. It’s not human and this is not the company I thought it was for so long.

I really hope you're a shift or a store manager. It's just nice to think of someones boss actually backing them up
darksideofthem00n5 points1y ago
I’m a store manager. Myself and a few other SM’s in my district set up our own conf call and had a lengthy convo about how our DM and other senior leaders are incredibly disconnected and out of touch right now.
We are bringing our notes to our regional director and partner resources manager. Right now starbucks is doing *very well* with sales. They wouldn’t be in the position to be pocketing any of this money if it weren’t for the partners on the front line working through a pandemic and doing more than they should. Understaffed, overworked, & underpaid has already taken a huge toll on us as partners and it will not last much longer. Starbucks is in a position to set an example for other retailers and food industries, yet we’re doing the same things. Are there other jobs out there that are worse? Sure. Doesn’t matter. They’re struggling too. Why are we stooping to their level? Why are we not leading the change that Starbucks chants about so much? Why are we not at a minimum of $15/hr everywhere? Why are we continuing to operate this insanely busy stores with nobody to hire? Why does our ceo get incredibly high bonus’s, with a ridiculous salary and the partners making him that money can’t even make rent? We need a change and we need it NOW.

Wow, I was just today thinking of this expression, how dismisive it is and how much I hate it. Sorry you are feeling shit. I'm also not in a good way with my mental health. I hope you get through it. Edit:typos

Hope you’re feeling better and have someone to talk to.
[deleted]4 points1y ago
Oh wow, I gotta try that.

im constantly debating whether or not to tell my SM about my disorders bc they aren’t the normal depression and anxiety i think he’s used to dealing with.
he’s definitely a leave it at the door type too so like :/
unfortunately my disorders are also extremely stigmatized so until i need an accommodation for them (which isn’t needed at the time) its just not worth the potential drama. its also not disabling just sometimes i get in a messed up mental state that i cant shake. i dont trust my coworkers enough to tell them either.

:( oh my love…I’m so sorry. I wish I could give you hugs and kick this company’s ass for their lack of consideration for our mental health….
This is correct. I do not know anything you are experiencing, and I want to shed understanding of the “leave it at the door”. Regardless of the fact Starbucks has its roots in capitalism, the idea is that you come to work FOR your customers and your peers. Several of our baristas are experiencing depression and the company allows us to have free therapy sessions and health insurance to be able to seek the help we need.
You may already be getting the help you need, and I want others to realize that it is important everyone understand that as baristas, we are meant to be present and empathetic to others while we are in our stores. Customers who come in can be rude, dismissive, and downright mean. However, jobs as these are meant to help you get outside of your own thoughts and show up for other people.
I started at this company ridden with depression and low self-esteem. By focusing on the core values of what they are attempting to convey, I have been able to see people as humans who are just doing the best they can with the information they have rather than people who are hell-bent on making my life more difficult.
I do not know what is going on in your life or even at your store. Our mental health is our most important tool to survive in life. What I am aiming at here is to explain that the premise of Starbucks’ culture is to be unwaveringly empathetic to the people coming inside the four walls.
I am not sure how this will go over with you all. This is only my experience and I am hoping for you to get the help you need. I believe in you.
shmeep1010 points1y ago
Imo ur experience is lucky. Ive been in therapy since I was 8 and I'm still depressed as fuck,, we are allowed to be human, depression is apart of us being human, and sure sbux may have resources but it still takes Months for antidepressants to work, and it normally takes longer bc finding the right combo for ur brain takes work. Perhaps we need to empathetic, but that shouldnt mean completely ignoring the fact that one's depressed. It's not OPs fault. And tell me how are we supposed to turn off depression when we get in the stores doors? People can't afford to miss work due to a depressive episode bc people don't want that at work.

Being empathetic with people who walk in the store INCLUDES EMPLOYEES.
handsoffmycoffee1 points1y ago
No one is disagreeing with you all. You all deserve empathy and kindness. Your employer and peers should treat you with respect, and they especially should when you are struggling in any way.
[deleted]6 points1y ago
employees should be part of the people inside the four walls, so where is the unwavering empathy for them?
