working almost 1 month and never touched bar(self.starbucksbaristas)

so I don’t know if my training ever completed but i have literally never had bar training. i can only make refreshers and the unsweetened iced teas and that’s because i mainly drink them so coworker showed me how to make them during a closing shift. i never touched hot bar nor ever had official “bar training” and dont know how to make anything else and this is my fourth week. im tired of doing mostly dishes, plus front warming/solo drive thru but every time i ask about doing bar it’s apparently too busy or understaffed for me to learn. i’m just super frustrated because i’m willing to learn and applied to be a barista, not a dishwasher. how should i go about getting bar training?

ask your manager. you should have had bar training on like, day 3. sometimes there's a delay in actually putting you on bar for a shift, because it takes a while to get the hang of it well enough to not fall behind, but you should have at least been shown how the machines work and the recipes for drinks.

Yeah I have never been shown that

Even our fastest are constantly behind. Car after car rolls up and we have nothing started for them. Especially Frappuccinos, at most there’s an empty cup with a sticker sitting there and the car has been waiting 2 minutes.

yep. it do be like that.

I'm four months in and feel like I am not trusted to be near the bar. I get pushed off each time or only allowed on when quiet. How are we supposed to learn if not give the chance? Ridiculous.

Fr that sucks. And then they wonder why they have 4 people on the floor but only 1 person who knows how to do bar on a super busy shift (at least in my location)

THIS.

I’m in the same position, been working since like may or June and I’ve only been allowed to do Bar 2 for like half an hour at a time when the store is slow. I feel like they just don’t trust me to do anything but front or drive thru? Probably because I was a cashier for 2 years at my last job so I can get them through the lines quickly- but I was hired to be a barista, not a cashier! Not to mention that the store is mostly drive thru and being on front is practically a joke position where all I do is fill the ice bucket and wipe tables all day! I want to learn how to do the other parts of the job but they don’t even let me do food or anything often. It’s really disheartening because whenever I do get a chance they make me stop doing it because I’m too slow even though some of the other “main bar people” are slower than me? yea I feel your pain so much

I’m four months in and all I do is bar. Just had to keep asking for bar time.

Idk if you’ve done the computer training for bar, but that will help your learning if you haven’t. You can come in on an off day to do the training if you haven’t yet (and you should be paid for it). Then ask if you can learn/practice bar during a closing shift. I’ve been here two months and the majority of my time on bar is during a closing shift since it’s much less drinks to handle at once and I still get the experience :) I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this situation!!

I did the computer training my 3rd day. I mainly work closings but they have me doing breakdowns and other cleaning :/ I dont really get time to do drinks

Then I would say other than continuing to ask for bar time when it’s late or slow, maybe bring this up with your manager? Let them know that you have had hardly any bar time and really need it to be able to do your job the best you can. After all, your title is “barista” and they should be acknowledging that.

I've only been at my store for 3 months. We are so understaffed that I'm almost exclusively on bar. I recommend that you try to learn the drinks while you're stuck on pos. It'll make learning bar a lot easier and you will be quicker :)

I’m in the same place too - I wondered whether it was because I’m “slow” - clearly it’s a Starbucks thing.

We’re you trained?
venusiangirl [OP]2 points1y ago
I was trained on everything but bar. I dont know if being shown how to make a few drinks count as training like I only know how to make the types of drinks that go in the shaker (green/black teas and refreshers)

So this is what my manager has told me what we’re doing atm. We’re training people in a few positions instead of doing 2 weeks of straight training. It’s possible that’s what your store is doing too. With pumpkin launching at least for us it’s been busier than usual so we need more people on the floor. She said it was unusual training. Instead of having the trainee and trainer on and off the floor it’ll make things a little easier just from a staffing perspective. Then they don’t need to fully staff the floor on top of having 2 people off the floor. I’m sure you’ll get a chance on bar and how to make drinks.
