Thinking about quitting, but feel sort of guilty(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Askandanswerquestion
Hello! 320 here!
I know I'm super new, which is kind of why I feel so guilty. I have family members I live with who have Covid, so I am currently self-quarentening. I miss being out and about, but I have found I miss Starbucks work less and less.
It kind of started with the way they handled my exposure, encouraging me to come in despite the fact that I live with covid positive people. Every time I bring up that I need to be quarentine, I get radio silence. It's super weird, and was upsetting me a lot.
Though I live my coworkers, I just found the job exausing. I was doing it to earn extra money for a house, before deciding I didn't want to buy and don't really plan on living where I am by next year. That means the plan already was to quit after December (I haven't told anyone this yet).
Though I love seeing people, Starbucks work was incredably draining, especially since it is one of three jobs (an after-school tutoring job, a once-a-week debate coaching job, and now starbucks). I didn't have time for anything else, and had to drop a lot of commitements.
Anyway, I really am not looking forward to going back to work at starbucks. But I've only been working there since July, and it feels kind of lame to quit already. Plus, right before I had to quarentine, I heard that a lot of my coworkers liked me, which made me super happy, and I don't want to upset them.
I don't "need" the extra income, thoughit's nice. On the flip side, it isn't enough to feel worth the exhaustion I feel each day I come in. I was already celebrating being put on the schedule less. Now I kind of don't want to be scheduled at all.
What do you guys think? Am I being a wimp or lazy? Will my coworkers think poorly of me if I quit? What should I do?

Thank you. I am so people-oriented that sometimes I need to hear it's okay to leave from someone else.

The siren is a nightmare. Do what helps your mental health the best. I'm a 299 and in the process of working on finding a different job as well.

Good luck on your job search! Haha! I've barely been working there and already it feels that way.

Do not feel guilty, just give a 2 weeks notice and be respectful. Also, you don’t have to tell your coworkers anything about you quitting, only your manager. I’m quitting McDonald’s and I’ve never felt better it’s like a weight lifted off of my shoulders.

Good to hear. That does sound nice.

Honestly if you don't plan to use starbucks as a reference in the future and don't plan on ever wanting your job back, you don't need to give 2 weeks notice

True.

fellow 320!! I just put in my two weeks notice yesterday, while in quarantine!! my manager wanted to me to come back to work sooner than the health department said i could which was kinda my last straw. i was also getting scheduled outside of my availability which sucks because i have 18 credits and two clubs this semester(one that i’m on the exec board for)… so i quit!! don’t feel bad!! i still am friends with/have plans with (soon to be old) coworkers & love them!!

Dude quit. And the upside is that since you’ve been there less than 3 months you don’t even have to list it as previous employment on a resume or application. Also, I’ve worked for Starbucks on and off for like 5 years and neither myself or any coworkers at any store have ever thought poorly of a barista who quits. Your manager might be salty, but really who cares. If you think you might need to fall back on Starbucks in the future as a rehire do your 2 weeks notice, otherwise I’d just stop going in. They’re asking you to expose your coworkers and customers to covid, which is outside of company policy and also morally fucked. Get out and live your best life, you don’t owe a corporation anything.

Starbucks is shit, lots of people are quitting, old partners and new, don’t feel bad, I’m quitting soon too, fuck this job.

Never feel guilty for quitting a job for a corporation who clearly under values you. You are always replaceable to them, never forget that. Especially if you give a 2 week notice for coworkers, you have absolutely nothing to be guilty for

300 here.
I'm in the process of finding another job. I came to sbux for the insurance and free coffee lol. Neither has proved important enough for the amount of disrespect and absolute hell I take from both coworkers and customers.
Find another job, if possible. Take care of yourself. The siren will be fine without us, I'm sure.

I encourage you to quit now. I wouldn't wish holiday season at Starbucks on my worst enemy.
rudebii3 points1y ago
Starbucks sees you as literally expendable, they aren’t going to take care of you, so what’s in your best interest, the bux will go on, I promise.
Edit: your fellow crew will be happy that you’re taking yourself, KiT if you want. I still talk to coworkers from 20 years ago. We all left on our timetable to other things and we’re happy for each other.

Update!
After hearing from you and talking to family and friends, I decided to stay with them a couple more months and scoop up some extra cash, but put in my two weeks before the holidays. Initially I felt kind of crummy about leaving, but you all gave me the courage to stand firm, even if on a different timeline than you recommended.
Thank you so much for commenting. I tend to be a loyal person to a fault, and without you I'm sure I would have slogged away my December break making Starbucks for grouchy customers.
