Hi all! I’ve been a barista for about 5 months now at a busy drive-thru-less location. I work two or three times a week, and though I don’t work many hours, the shifts I do work make me want to uh. Kermit. There’s Too Many noises in our compact lil store, too many customers packed in, & on top of that, we’re severely understaffed and on our third SM in 5 months. Do y’all have any tips for grounding yourself/calming yourself down during a chaotic shift? I’m tired of feeling like a burden on my coworkers every time I sprint to the back for a quick cry/stim break. Much love, and may your tip jars be overflowing 💖

Ask if you can wear noise cancelling earbuds that have an option for just muffling ambient noises while allowing you to hear clear speech still, for the sounds. I have an old chunky pair that works like that; a slimmer version would be pretty discreet and still allow you to hear partners and customers who need your attention. I’m not sure how viable an option this is since I’ve never brought it up, but it’s the only thing that’s worked for me at home.

Whenever I need a moment to chill I go to wash my hands at the sink, which technically keeps me on the floor; I find the water and the routine soothing.

I always try to remind myself “it’s just coffee. It’s important to be quick and get things correct, but in the end it’s just coffee.”

God I'm in the s a m e boat. Usually I get myself to work fairly early and give myself time to stim in my car and then come in 20ish minutes early so I can sit in the back. It helps give me time to adjust to the new sound levels.

When I go for a break, I go outside even though I live in Texas and it's usually hot. Just being outside helps me out because of the overwhelming noise sounds inside.

After work I wear my wireless headphones and just don't turn on any music I just use them to cut back noise since noise is my biggest autism trigger.

I’m in a similar boat, to calm down I run cold water over my wrists. If you figure out anything I’d love to hear lmao but good luck. And always remember that every bad shift has an end ❤️
