Straws For Disabled Customers (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by babyIoves
Idk where my manager got the idea that we're getting rid of straws completely, but she says that's happening soon & is now making us reject customers when they ask for straws. I brought up the point that some ppl are disabled and need straws and how would we know if that's the case? She's saying we need to ask them if they're disabled if they insist on a straw. Uh? Is this... allowed?
Meggilli91 210 points 1y ago
Lmao that’s not allowed at all! We highly encourage our customers to buy the reusable straws we have in store. But we’re continuing to have straws in stock for people that request them. I’ve heard rumours of paper straws in the future. Most fast food places in Canada now have paper straws
groovydoll 57 points 1y ago
Ugh paper straws just suck tho
Meggilli91 29 points 1y ago
Agreed. They aren’t made for people that don’t chug their drinks in 2mins
hidethenight17 22 points 1y ago
My store has paper straws!
LunaSpain94 9 points 1y ago
We have had paper straws in the UK for a few years it makes me cringe a little to the US still uses plastic ones.

We just got paper straws this week -_-

I know that we are trying to reduce the use of straws, but get rid of them? It seems like it would be difficult to drink a Frappuccino without one. Sounds like your SM has no clue....

exactly!

Yessss so much this. Starbucks could save money or be more sustainable in any number of areas that would have way more impact than straws. OP, your manager sounds like an idiot and I’m sorry you have to deal with that.
gabby24681 5 points 1y ago
THIS dude. I’m so tired of being blamed for shit that’s not anything I can really do something about
TheeeStarGirl 3 points 1y ago
yesss strongly agree

Imagine a world where you drive up to any fast food establishment and you're expecting your favorite drink of choice. When you get to the window you prefer a straw to drink while you're driving because that's the safe way to drink anything while you're driving. When you politely ask for a straw for your drink you are dumbfounded to someone asking you, "Uhm... are you disabled sir?"

Like... what the actual hell?
juju483 49 points 1y ago
That is absolutely a violation. It's none of our business if someone is disabled or not.
daggerdangerxx 23 points 1y ago
absolutely not, you need to report that
babyIoves [OP] 12 points 1y ago
Let me add this to my literal list of things I have to report my SM for lmaooo
whywhywhyamihere 16 points 1y ago
No no no no no! I believe you should get paper straws to replace plastic straws - how is someone supposed to have a frappuccino without one? And also, at least at my store, we have some plastic ones for those who request (i.e. people with a disability who need a plastic straw) but we CANNOT ask them if they are disabled. Just like with masks, if they say they're exempt we just need to take that at face value and accept it.
babyIoves [OP] 8 points 1y ago
Agree about the first part but Starbucks sent out a guidance that even "exempt" people are required to wear masks!
whywhywhyamihere 2 points 1y ago
Ah! Good to know, I've been off for a little bit. Thanks for the update!
Sunflowerfields17 13 points 1y ago
That’s an ADA violation of I have ever heard one. Report that immediately

What the fuuuuuck????????

I'm a person with disabilities that make using a straw more convenient/safe for me:

Wtf hahaha. What a jackass. I don't look disabled 99% of the time.

I just say "Here! Also our lids have the hole off-center, like a sippy lid, just a heads up 😊 have a nice day!"

Tells them we have strawless lids, I don't have to watch them struggle to punch it through the center mindlessly, keeping Starbucks drinks accessible but also keeping in mind that a lot of other fast food joints don't have sip lids.
medusas-garden 6 points 1y ago
Also like you need a straw to drink drinks with dome lids on them? So stupid.
misscerh 5 points 1y ago
Tell them it's a matter of ADA compliance. Idk if that's actually true, but as far as I know plastic straws are the only viable option for many people with disabilities. The reason being other types of straws dissolve, melt, or create a risk of injury.
sheep_heavenly 1 points 1y ago
Medical grade silicone straws are what I usually recommend to people that need straws for accessibility. They can be rated for high temps, they're flexible, dishwasher safe generally, and importantly they can fold up really small into a carrying case so I'm not sipping on a Strawberry Acai with Purse Lint stirred in.
bingethinker16 3 points 1y ago
Pretty sure that's against the ADA....
indyrenegade 3 points 1y ago
I uh, don't know what your manager was told but we were told (Canada) that we're switching to paper straws... not getting rid of them entirely?
Mikaylapancakes 2 points 1y ago
Wait how would they get rid of them what about Frappuccino’s?
HotDogClouds 1 points 1y ago
Bruh nah that's hella not allowed. Plus straws won't make a damned difference if the corps don't stop killing the earth
shikiP 1 points 1y ago
? How do they expect customers to drink anything with a dome lid...?
HollowRibcage 1 points 1y ago
I remember earlier on in the straw shortage for our store- we ended up getting paper straws as backups and customers were NOT happy. They’d request the plastic ones and catch a fit when we didn’t have them. One lady had gone as far as to ask me if we were making the permanent switch to paper straws and I explained as of right now we’re just experiencing a shortage - she replies ..and I kid you not .. “oh good thank god. I thought it was some act to save the turtles. WE DONT EVEN HAVE TURTLES HERE!!” .. and drives off smiling and relieved.

This is why we have these global issues. -.-
Saradigm 1 points 1y ago
We had paper straws for like a week before they went back to normal. I think it’ll be a while before this happens, and I don’t think it will. Customers would be upset that they can’t have a straw and would not like to be told to buy one and we all know Starbucks will roll over and die if a customer tells them to. Starbucks is also going in such a fast food direction that I just doubt they’ll go no straw.
thehairqueen 1 points 1y ago
I work at Starbucks in Canada we have gotten out paper straws but still working threw the old plastic ones, we have bendable plastic straws that people can ask for if they are disabled and need a bendable straw. Maybe that will eventually happen there
