Taking Lunch Early (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by babyIoves
California partners or anyone else that has similar rules: is it true that if we hit our fifth without taking a lunch, we get paid an extra hour? I had a previous SM tell me this, & also said the same thing happens if we don't take our full 30 minute lunch. I hit my fifth at least 3 times a week so I'm curious lmao

That is the labor law in Cali, so yes. If you take a lunch at 5 hours and 1 minute you get paid an extra hours worth of pay. If you have to clock in and not take a full 30 minute lunch, same thing.

They always make me take my lunch an hour into my shift so I still have over 5 hours left of my shift afterwards lmao

Yeah, sadly that is what a lot of stores are promoting in order to avoid getting in trouble with not giving out lunches or breaks. I hate having my lunch first thing, but it’s that or I don’t get one some days. I lived in Cali for 10 years and recently moved to Texas, and these people don’t believe in breaks sometimes lol

Omg lol I just did the opposite! Just moved here from Texas after living there my whole life. California ppl don't take breaks either 😭

I bet you don’t miss this humidity! Lol

But seriously, why do companies think we don’t need breaks? I like being able to eat or use the restroom!

I moved to North Carolina from Maryland and instead of the 15 minute paid breaks I was used to, they give us 10 instead and it really feels like this isn't anywhere near enough time.

Yesss when I lived in Texas I would get an hour break, now in California I get 30 minutes 😭

I work in LA county and that's the rule here. I think it's statewide as well.

I don't think you'll get dinged for missing it yourself because it's technically your shifts job to manage their time. But I try to remind then as much as possible whenever I get too close. lol

The only time you can hit your fifth and not receive an extra hour of pay would be if you are working less than 6 hours total. For that reason, many stores/businesses like to give 5.75hr shifts.
