for part time at Starbucks. I mainly interested in this job because I need a part-time job and health benefits. There is a possibility I may want infertility coverage in the future as well which is another reason I’m looking at Starbucks. I would also need to be making some money as well though and I’m concerned if I want the insurance coverage that would cover IVF I would be working there 100% for the benefits and not be making any money. Is this correct? I read somewhere that someone pays 800 a month out of her paycheck for her infertility benefits.

The cost per pay cheque depends on which tier you get. I got the silver tier when I was expecting and I ended up with only $50/pay cheque. It’s worth it for me because marketplace health insurance would have costed us $1400 monthly for a worst plan. You’re also required to work 90 days before the coverage is offered to you.

Thanks. Yes I know about working 3 months before it clicks in. So for the coverage that covered IVF, working 20 hours a week, you only made $50 a week? Crap. That’s my current dilemma. I can’t devote 20 hours a week for $50. I don’t need to make a TON for 20 hours. But more than that!! Do I have options?

You have to reframe your thinking if you’re going there for the benefits. Your take home check is going to be small, but your health insurance is going to be paid for.

I’m also working here for the fertility benefits. My spouse makes the majority of our money but they are self employed so I have always carried benefits for the family. During the lapse of benefits from me quitting my old job and the new starbucks benefits becoming available, we’re paying out of pocket for coverage. It’ll be a HUGE financial relief when my 90 days hits and I’m able to enroll us all. Sure my take home will be significantly smaller, but we’ll have more money at the end of our month overall.

The $800 a paycheck is not strictly for fertility benefits, it’s for total healthcare benefits. If you have primary insurance elsewhere and starbucks can be your secondary insurance, you might be looking at a lower cost. But honestly there are so many different factors (like age, number of dependents, etc) that change the monthly OOP cost for health insurance, it’s hard to compare your potential situation to someone else’s.

Totally get it but I am single. Supporting myself. So if I devote 3-4 days a week solely for the benefits, I won’t make enough money to survive.

Ah I see. Well you aren’t required to enroll in benefits if you can get healthcare elsewhere. Maybe wait until you’re full time?
