Rehired at a different store(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SisterAndromeda2007
I started this Friday. In drive through there was a customer who ordered 2 hot green tea latte. So I prepared the pitcher as if I was making a Venti. I poured a little in the first tall cup and then a little in the second tall cup and back and forth untill there was none left. They both come out looking the same consistency too so. So anyway, my shift leader corrects me to not do this again. He said corporate doesn't want us doing this. Is this making one drink at a time thing common? My previous store didn't follow this "corporate" rule.
I hope this doesn't offend anyone but if this is a corporate rule, well it's pedantic.

Yes it is a rule same thing like how they don’t want you to “batch blend” Frappuccino’s even though the measurements for a tall = half of what it is for venti so overflow isn’t even the issue. When I worked at Starbucks I simply did not give a fuck and did it anyway. Just don’t do it if a manager is watching lmao.

This is what I am thinking too. It's too bad the shift leaders are so fixed on following this silly rule.
FfierceLaw34 points1y ago
I don't know that they are so fixed on following it, they just know they have to say it. They are more fixed on speed which is why you were doing it that way
SisterAndromeda2007 [OP]21 points1y ago
I'm going to keep doing it the efficient way.
FfierceLaw17 points1y ago
We rarely get that beverage hot so your post actually taught me a new trick
BaristaWoosa12 points1y ago
It’s not so much “fixed” on following it as it’s if our SM sees partners not following standard and/or not seeing us coaching to it then we get a lovely chat about us not doing our jobs correctly which turns into a conversation about them wondering if they made the right choice in promotion etc. it’s like being treated like a toddler so standard standard standard it is regardless of efficiency. Trust when I say if it feels like we’re being petty, we do honestly feel bad.

My store manager told me that I was cool to double batch as long as all of the measurements were right.
Pupusa_Seb2 points1y ago
Idgaf either. Starbucks wants to focus on speed more than the craft than ima cut some corners
medusas-garden53 points1y ago
I’m a shift and I do that. But I know we’re not supposed to and if higher ups walk in I won’t do it in front of them.
SisterAndromeda2007 [OP]9 points1y ago
Exactly! That's how I always understood it.
mrbubblegxm35 points1y ago
i’m grateful our manager is a 22yr old w pink hair because she batch blends all the time. so you know we can breathe
SisterAndromeda2007 [OP]11 points1y ago
My ex boss would do this too. I miss her.
beverlycrushers19 points1y ago
You actually really shouldn’t do this, as it can mess with the proportion of foam and milk in the drink. I understand batch blending fraps, but for hot bar drinks, it actually does affect the quality of the end result. Customers pay their own hard-earned money for their drinks, and we should not be sacrificing quality for speed. Sorry to be a party pooper haha. Preparing for downvotes…
SisterAndromeda2007 [OP]5 points1y ago
There is a solution to the whole foam thing though. You pour back and forth. That's way both drinks get equal amounts.

Yeah, agreed. Anyone who is getting their panties in a bunch about people getting a shitty drink from a shitty coffee fast food chain really needs to chill. It’s so not that deep and if people are really so concerned with the intricacies of their drink they need to get it from somewhere else.
SisterAndromeda2007 [OP]3 points1y ago
💯% exactly!
SisterAndromeda2007 [OP]2 points1y ago
... meanwhile corporate doesn't mind if the shots go bad. If milk doesn't touch the shot before 10 seconds, it's toast...or well it tastes like an ash tray.
Arevrec5 points1y ago
I agree as a shift I think someone should just sequence right rather then shortcuts like this but batch fraps all day
proletarithot2 points1y ago
Agreed. Plus, a tall is 12oz and a venti is 20. Overfilling the pitcher to your best guess and adding the 2x the matcha won’t make a standard drink at all. Not the worst shortcut I’ve seen a barista take, but still an unnecessary one. Hot drinks take a second to make.
Batch frappes forever tho
caughdeighy5 points1y ago
according to corporate we are not supposed to batch make ANY drinks, ever ever ever, including frappuccinos. just don't do it when anyone important is watching ;P
personally i wouldn't batch matcha lattes in order to keep consistent ratios of powder:milk but i'm kind of a rule stickler myself. just not with the frapps.
the-homosexualagenda2 points1y ago
This rule was meant for handmade drinks to all taste differently, but some customers would just prefer consistency or quicker service to this, so I would say bending the rules a little won’t hurt you, especially if it’s a drink with only one or two ingredients/steps in it. Of course, be wary of the management style and if they want you to do things the long way, just remember you get paid by the hour and take your time :)
elainafromthemoon2 points1y ago
If they want 45 second drive times I’m gonna make two tall drinks at the same time.
Elliotisnotokay1 points1y ago
Yes its a rule. However its typical for stores to batch them (what you were doing) some stores are really against it though
jklmnopedy1 points1y ago
It absolutely is pedantic, therefore it's absolutely standard, too lol. It's interesting your say would say that though since DT is all about low window times ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
