Called out cause I’m in the ER am I the jerk? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by [deleted]
Start this off with my issues:
1) I’m in the process of being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, meaning this guy has potty issues. I called out once in regards to that.
2) today I woke up with a piercing pain in my lung, it had been going on since yesterday. I called out after checking into the ER and I hope that I can just get out of here and call my store and do my shift

I’ve only called out twice with adequate notice on my part, don’t want to lose my job and don’t want to ignore my health. Am I the jerk for calling in? Sort of felt like it when I told my supervisor.

LITERALLY NOT AT ALL. you did the right thing, you are entitled to sick days, and your health absolutely always comes before work. if there is a staffing issue, that is the manager’s problem, not yours. please do not feel guilty, esp. for obvious emergencies like this!!!!!!!
Material-Leg5325 41 points 1y ago
honestly, i would recommend you don’t even go to work if you are out in time. if you have sick days, use them. if you don’t but can afford to miss the day, use it. I cannot imagine going straight from the ER to work, no one should have to do that.

Thanks for those words, really helped pull me out of this slump. Just got my x rays done hoping all is good.
PingPingPoohole 118 points 1y ago
Bro. You're in the ER. Don't buy into that corpo capitalist bullshit. Take care of yourself. You are worth it.
[deleted] [OP] 78 points 1y ago
Thank you ping ping poohole, not only does your name inspire but your words do also. Thanks for the kindness
haydensidun 28 points 1y ago
No. You did the right thing amigo
[deleted] [OP] 14 points 1y ago
Thank you, rough start to the day for me
philosopher_cat_lady 25 points 1y ago
I know you're not the jerk and all I read was your title
[deleted] [OP] 10 points 1y ago
Aw, thanks.
TheFriendlyFeminist 19 points 1y ago
Shift probably projecting their stress onto you but not at all your fault. Take care of yourself first!!
[deleted] [OP] 16 points 1y ago
Thank you, ended up getting discharged with a respiratory lung infection, so I was basically told I have a cold and to go rest up. About to fine dine on some breakfast followed by a healthy serving of Tylenol
Js_On_My_Yeet 11 points 1y ago
What's more important? Your health or this shitty job?
[deleted] [OP] 8 points 1y ago
Health is more important indeed
Torminatorii 8 points 1y ago
If you get a note from the physician who saw you they literally cannot be mad. Screw them, let them deal with their own stuff, feel better my guy.
[deleted] [OP] 14 points 1y ago
Thanks. Wasn’t able to get like a hand written note that they used to do in school. ER gave me discharge papers with the time stamps on them and an explanation of why I was seen and the diagnosis. I feel that those should suffice as a dr note when I come in for my next shift
mrcupcake18 7 points 1y ago
Your in the ER! Hell no you are doing nothing wrong! Listen your physical and mental health ALWAYS comes first and is not worth sacrificing for any job! Don’t feel guilty and don’t let them make you feel that way either
[deleted] [OP] 4 points 1y ago
Thanks for those kind words, I know it’s probably a great stress on them to have the callout. Apparently there were other call outs this morning so that may explain my supervisors irritation. Glad I posted here, was getting worked up over how to deal with calling out, now I see all I need to work on is a little rest and relaxation.
Put_Me_In_Coach96 6 points 1y ago
So I'm a shift and this morning I had 2 people call out due to health reasons. If your manager’s first response isn't “are you okay?” you need to find a new store. Even when the going gets rough, my first priority is to make sure my baristas are okay. You definitely did the right thing, and I hope you are doing okay! Screw the siren.
Swordxxxx 5 points 1y ago
Starbucks would forget about you tomorrow if you died. HEALTH ALWAYS SHOULD TAKE PRIORITY OVER WORK. If you feel like you need to go to the hospital, you go to the hospital, not Starbucks.

Plus people call out all the time. Everyday is a different short staffing situation. Everyone working today will forget about it in less than a week either way if you’re there or not.
ryzzostar 5 points 1y ago
I had to go to the ER once a few hours before my shift and I let my SM know. They didn't ask any questions but "are you ok?" and "can you please let me know how you are after your visit?". I had to be out 3 days for an injury and they kept checking up on me. You're not a jerk for calling out. I hope they were just having a rough day and will check in on you to make sure you're ok. Please take the time you need to rest and get better before going back to work. Your health is not worth more than a coffee slinging job. They can make do without you until you're better. I hope you feel better soon!

Probably just one of those days for my store. It’s a small town with a coffee addiction and one callout usually spells near death for the operation. Two call outs spells disaster and three is unimaginable. Appreciate the kind words and your thoughts.
Princesspoisonivey 4 points 1y ago
If they say anything about it, remind them of all the paperwork they would have to fill out if they had to call Emergency Services or if you died on the clock.

Everyone hates paperwork, especially unavoidable paperwork

When you get diagnosed, called PCC and get an ADA exception put in place. Chron's is a protected class so you cannot lose your job because of it.

Get a doctor's note and take the day off and rest.
GinaMohundro 3 points 1y ago
Absolutely not. You have to take care of you. You’re the only you you’re gonna get lol.

Also, my mother had Crohn’s disease as well as her first cousin and we suspect that their great grandmother had it too, it was just a long time ago before Dr. Crohn did the research so I am aware of what a serious diagnosis this is. So you extra have to take care of yourself. Autoimmune diseases are intense anyways and especially when it is related to your gut health.
[deleted] [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Crohn’s as far as I know, is similar to IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) it involves irregular movements and lots of discomfort - two things I experience. I have lots of dr visits lined up and calling out is always a last resort for me. I appreciate all the kindness, my hope is that I don’t have Crohn’s of course, my dr did refer me to a specialist in order to ascertain what’s what. Anyways, thanks all of you guys commenting helped me stabilize my thoughts on all this. It also helped me realize that I did have a valid reason (extremely so) and I shouldn’t sweat it.
[deleted] [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Just wanted to reach out to all you humans.
At work today, doing it to it.
My side no longer hurts and having that day of rest was the best thing for me.
My manager is super understanding and was even willing to give me days off - if I still felt not okay, of course this dude is about money (and being healthy) so I am doing my shifts without incident.
Appreciate all of you and I hope you guys are taking it easy
verkruuze 2 points 1y ago
Your health is more important than any job.

Your health is more important than any store.

Your health is more important than a shift.

Please value yourself as a person. Any job that makes you feel bad for calling out is not a job you want.
ZacW94 2 points 1y ago
I don't even work at Starbucks, but I know that health comes before work.
capybaraRage 2 points 1y ago
Hey! First off- I hope you're ok!

Second- try not to take any tone or sigh or whatever you heard in your supervisor's voice that made you feel like a jerk too personally. The world is crumbling right now and they're just as tired of everything as you are. If your store is anything like mine, there's a call out almost everyday. Between being short staffed in a record sales year and the shortage of all the product (I just LOVE being yelled at over a straw *facepalm*) we're all tired. Now if they start acting like assholes towards you, then that's a real problem.

You earn sick time for a reason. If you need to go to the ER, you go. Coffee will continue to brew while you take care of yourself. You haven't made it a habit so you're good.
radpandaparty 2 points 1y ago
Didn't read anything other than the title because I didn't have to. No you aren't.
luvduvbunny 2 points 1y ago
Don’t feel guilty about being in the ER!!!!! Your health is your priority, the company isn’t! You are not a jerk by putting your health first!
slobberingapparition 2 points 1y ago
Not the jerk at all, but I feel the worry. I once had to call out when I was still a brand new greenbean while I was actively in the ER, IV hooked up and everything and I got yelled at over the phone.

But take care of yourself, seriously. If they don't understand that your health comes first, then they suck.
abradds 2 points 1y ago
if you’re in the ER you absolutely are not a jerk for calling out, your health is worth so much more than sweet cream cold foam
Gingerpunchurface 2 points 1y ago
IMO people who come to work sick are the jerks.
ElijahLordoftheWoods 2 points 1y ago
You absolutely did the right thing and if they try to punish you report them
rio8envy7 2 points 1y ago
No. I would explain (how ever much you’re comfortable with) to your manager about your situation. Just so they’re aware if there’s an issue or something comes up in the future. Your health comes first both physically and mentally.
Sarahthelizard 2 points 1y ago
Yes yo-NO YOU AREN'T. GET BETTER FAM.
LilKaySigs 2 points 1y ago
Damn the reality we live in. We’re really out here normalizing putting the job over our well-being. Of course you’re not the jerk, if your manager, supervisor, and coworkers are not heartless assholes theyll understand
rwwhys 2 points 1y ago
if you have to go to the ER you are not the jerk. I am just a batista, but know other team members who have had to call out last min because of an emergency. your health is important.
vulgar_witch 2 points 1y ago
You did the right thing. If ANYONE complained about this I'd throw hands. Crohn's is no joke, and neither is your health!
sharkiemd 2 points 1y ago
i don’t even have to read past the title of this post to say NO!!!! *YOUR HEALTH COMES FIRST ALWAYS.* hope you get well soon and have a smooth recovery
FfierceLaw 2 points 1y ago
Hell no you're not the jerk. Shift should be mature enough to be properly concerned for you, their partner, the store be damed!
[deleted] [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Late stage capitalism mindset at its finest. If they write you up or threaten firing you, threaten suing. If they bitch and moan, tell them to fuck off. This shitty company doesn’t deserve your blood sweat and tears, not until they pay you enough for it. Don’t ever question your worth. No company is worth more than your own well-being, no matter what corporate bullshit they try to cram down your throat.
