If a customer comes to the drive thru and asks how many of us are here getting the tips and then hands you $60 so each worker gets 10$ and insists that we each get 10$ of what she’s handing me. Do I put in tip jar? or split between the 6 of us who were busting out 36-38 sec drive time? Seems obvious to me but manager insisted I put in jar pool.

It has to go in the tip jar, unless each is placed in an individual envelope with the baristas name in it. Happened to us last year.

I was hoping that wasn’t the case. The customer would have done so in the moment if my manager would have said that while she was parked waiting on her food and drinks. This customer has been coming for a long time and just recently came into a large amount of money. She expressed to me how much she appreciated the time I always spent with her; helping her with her app or knowing she always likes 3 raw sugars and that we were her only constant outside of her home interaction during this pandemic. I digress 🙃

I had a customer for a while that would bring in envelopes with my name on them because she wanted to give me specifically $20 tips. It has to have your name on it so it’s considered a gift and not communal tips.

Gets put in the tip jar because we can’t bust out good peak OTW times without being set up with a good close. Sharing tips this way acknowledges the role the whole store plays in setting each other up for success. Just let her know that in the future she could give you your tip in an envelope with your name on it if she wanted to make sure it would all go to you. :)

I totally understand where you are coming from!!! On an important note: There is never a good close. There are always back ups to be made, nothing is stocked (cups, beans, napkins, straws, lids, bases, milks, refreshers, whips, drizz, and so on), they have 10-15 customers an hour after 6 pm and they clock out early! Frankly, We have an evening tiktok crew. Our SM is never there at night and never acknowledges the problem outright. I know I’m Just bitching at this point 🙄sry not sry

If your SM is aware of this issue and won’t do anything about it, go to your DM. It’s unfair to the entire store.

How many tasks get done in the morning? It’s easy to say they do no work but if they’re catching up on tasks that didn’t get done early, they won’t have time do the more secondary task at closing (the store should always been clean at the end of the night and sometimes you have to sacrifice making back-ups and stocking). A reason they could be leaving early is if the SM keeps telling the shift that they have to leave on time, some will even give write-ups for staying late to finish tasks. I’m not saying this is what happens at your store but those are some reasons why it’s hard for them to get stocking and back-ups done. I really hate the whole morning vs night where everyone thinks the other person didn’t do their job and try to look at it from the other persons perspective as well, especially when it’s the company that’s screwing us over.

Yeah night crew isn’t perfect but I can’t count how many times I’ve walked in on a morning shift and had the baristas AND THE SSV tell me it’s slow and there is nothing to do while I look around the disaster zone and say “TF you mean?!?”
taller-ghost-walt4 points1y ago
No that’s really frustrating, I’m sorry you have to deal with that. For the record I’m solely an opener so I definitely understand what it’s like to deal with rough closes. If your SM refuses to acknowledge the issue, go above their head.
bman146132 points1y ago
I’ve busted out 28 second drive thru times with the shittiest of closes, they don’t deserve that money. Are they gonna fire you for taking a tip???
FfierceLaw18 points1y ago
Someone gave a big tip that they wanted to go only to me - I was DTR - so I thanked profusely, smiled as big as I could so that it would show despite my mask and as soon as they couldn't see I put it in the tip jar. Let shift know there was a big bill in there so they could pick it up. Not trying to be noble, just make the moment right for everyone, as much as that customer's intentions were kind, my partners deserve it too so I felt like it was mine to tip out

Tip jar.
bugzyys2 points1y ago
Bruh how tf are your drive times so good???? We get like 42-43 on a good day
Lusterlit2 points1y ago
Unpopular opinion: Just act like nothing is happening, say nothing, make sure no one is looking and put it in your apron. You got that tip enjoy it.

Starbucks policy will say tip jar, but as far as stores in the US go, the IRS that we report tips to states tips are at the discretion of the person giving the tip. No company can tell someone where their tip goes, otherwise it would be considered part of the wages. If a customer says it's for you, it's for you. That being said, it's a little sus to pocket money on camera. The safest way that satisfies the customer's specific wish, and your job security, is to ensure the tip is given in an envelope or something.
