It’s the year 2021. when paying for a Frappuccino or iced latte, customers pay with multiple different forms of payment - not so much with cash. It boggles my mind that a $1 billion company cannot afford to make tipping more available. I have customers asking to tip all the time, however Starbucks has yet to develop a way for customers to tip using their debit or credit card. They can only tip through the app, and then again, no one ever does because the design is awful. There is a tremendous profit us baristas are missing out on. Imagine if customers were able to more conveniently tip without cash… let alone if every customer tips at least $1. This does not concern Starbucks and I’ll tell you why. BECAUSE IT DOES NOT BENEFIT THEM WHATSOEVER. Starbucks is not invested in it’s partners. They just want to increase profitability for themselves while turning a blind eye to their awesome partners! When are we going to demand that corporate actually listens to it’s partners. Do we not matter? It sure feels like it. Trust me, I’m aware that not everyone is happy working at Starbucks, but this dang sure would help. If you’ve gotten this far, it’s probably not a new concept. I just want to bring awareness to this topic and start discussion about it so that we as partners can live better lives! I love my Starbucks family, but let’s make the experience better for EVERYONE. Peace out ✌️

👏🏻👏🏻if subway can do it. Starbucks can too.
codeyumi54 points1y ago
The reason they won’t do it is for “ease of service”; they want times down and , even saying no, will take extra time. It’s insane.
Ok-Butterscotch4704 [OP]49 points1y ago
And that’s exactly the point. You hit the nail on the head!!! All the care about is ‘getting times down’ even when there’s only 3 partners on the floor. Insane
sheep_heavenly9 points1y ago
Its not that, not entirely at least. Card processors charge a percentage of the processed funds as a fee that the business has to pay. They don't care if it's funds meant for a worker or the business, it's a transaction they processed so they want their 0.25% or whatever of the total. Pennies add up on paper and the people upset are customers that don't really care enough to demand change and baristas who tend to stay less than 3 years. SM and above don't get tips and people who chase good tips work serving where it's magnitudes higher.
We're chasing a tiny increase and missing the bigger issue: we're asking customers to fund our basic income from the good of their hearts rather than being paid a fair wage by our employer.
Ok-Butterscotch4704 [OP]6 points1y ago
I agree! We shouldn’t even have to be asking for better tips! We should just have better wages 😂

Starbucks doesn't want us to earn good tips because then we might make enough money to be able to quit our job

PUT THIS IN THE PARTNER SURVEYS! honestly, put all the complaints in the weekly partner surveys. Staffing/labor, not having corporate put any statements out about shortages and leaving it just to us, new partner training bring so awful, new food/drinks being subpar, pay being so low compared to other chains, etc. I put in a big complaint about my benefits on one and they actually called me and asked me about it, so it shows that someone actually reads the weekly surveys and addresses complaints. If you don't get the emails to do weekly surveys, you can sign up, just ask your manager and I think it's also on partner hub! The more we spam them with complaints, the more likely they might see it and maybe do something. There's also a big annual partner survey coming up as well, and definitely fill it out! This is the chance to tell corporate how we feel and they will actually read them. We got this, friends. Sending you all love 💚

I’ve heard it’s incentive to get people to download the app and tip through there. Whenever people ask at the drive thru if they can tip through the card reader I say no unfortunately not and hint that they should call starbucks and complain;)
acertwo11 points1y ago
They’ll never do this because implementing it would cost them money and gain them nothing. They don’t care about us and never will
National-Chance240611 points1y ago
i completely agree w you

People should be able to tip with stars.
Assiqtaq7 points1y ago
I work in a King Soopers kiosk, and we are not allowed to accept tips on threat of being fired.
lily-amber3 points1y ago
They also put our digital tips on our pay checks so they are taxed now. Thanks Starbucks, I didn’t need to eat much anyway I guess…
Few_Conclusion_88242 points1y ago
No they just don’t include the tips anymore on your taxes so you have to go in and file them in pretty sure Starbucks was just estimating before and doesn’t want to do the work anymore Edit: so I believe that for people who make less tips it’s actually better and people who make more tips is worse.
lily-amber2 points1y ago
Oh ok! I guess I was misinformed!
xiew1 points1y ago
It was implemented to prevent the IRS from going after baristas that forgot to report any of their tips.
Few_Conclusion_88241 points1y ago
We didn’t have to report our tips before though, so if anything now it’s implemented so the irs DOES go after baristas right?
xiew1 points1y ago
Technically you were always supposed to but Starbucks had the auto 50cents per hour just in case people didn’t. Now that digital tips go through your paycheck, those digital tips are reported to the IRS automatically and you are responsible for the cash portion.
xiew1 points1y ago
Before the change an automatic 50 cents per hour in tips was reported to the IRS automatically and you were responsible for reporting anything over that 50 cents in mypartnerinfo. This was implemented to prevent people forgetting and then having the IRS come after you. The 50 cents is no longer automatically reported and now it just reports whatever your digital tips were and we are supposed to just report the cash tips we receive every week.

I was told it was because they dont want customers to feel obligated.
Ok-Butterscotch4704 [OP]2 points1y ago
That’s the worst excuse ever🤣 they push the Starbucks app onto customers which in return increases there profit. How is that not making them feel obligated. I just don’t see it.plus, we are crafting beverages that take time to make and some longer than others.
Last_Employment_17301 points1y ago
This is the worst fucking excuse they could give. I worked for a different company for about a year, and even they had an option for tipping on the card reader. Awhile ago, the machine started acting up, so we could no longer hand it out the window. We started asking people if they'd like to leave a tip and even then people don't feel obligated. God, I'm sorry that Starbucks doesn't care enough. I feel for you
TylerJ7162 points1y ago
Panera has a tipping option for their customers (former panera employee) and I always found it odd Starbucks didn't implement the same system
