Target Starbucks vs Corporate Starbucks (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by MinimumSelection5133
Hi! So I’ve been working at a Tarbucks for 3 months now and within the 3 months we’ve been really short staffed and I’m the one that my team leader puts me in charge when she isn’t there and I’ve basically been doing a lot more than I’m supposed to (keep in mind we can’t take tips). The past month has been overwhelming and stressful. I’m an opener and I would come in alone sometimes doing the closing routine along with my opening routine just because the closers didn’t do what they were supposed to. I got interviewed at a corp store today and got the job, but I didn’t know I couldn’t work both licensed and corp store at the same time. My plan originally was to work both and compare what works better for me. Also, I’m supposed to start my Master Barista training on Monday and my current Team Lead also asked me last week if I was interested in being a Team Leader because she sees potential in me. Right now I am going back and forth on my decision but I’m leaning towards going to a corp store. Any thoughts?

hey there! i was in this exact same situation for about 6 months until the end of May - that’s when i finally put my foot down and applied at a corporate Starbucks. the whole time i worked at Tarbucks (i never thought of that nickname before LOL i like it) it was me and one other person, we had no master barista or anything with a team lead that was in charge of a whole other department as well. were only able to stay open from 8am to 3pm because we were the only people to open and close. it was very bad and our area was always put at the bottom of the priority list. we did everything that any team lead/master barista was supposed to do which isn’t at all what we thought we were getting into. it feels a little extra annoying knowing that you’re being overlooked and they refuse to do anything about it because being understaffed at the Starbucks that is also out of stock of everything and broken everywhere is the least of their concerns.
working at cooperate hasn’t been ideal, it will always have its flaws, but i would choose it over my other situation any day. you have someone else in charge of scheduling, someone there to put orders away, someone being able to take customers order, and just basically more people working with you than just yourself. it makes it feel a lot less overwhelming knowing you don’t have to try and finish the order and do the pull and clean the oven all alone in an hour. so having the support/team is definitely a huge deal breaker, and you actually get tips and benefits.
so from personal experience, i would say see what a corporate Starbucks gives you. if it’s still not what you were hoping for, then at least you gave it a shot and can explore other areas regardless licensed and corporate stores as well.
sending you the best of luck!

yes omg we have the exact same situation! they put my team lead in different departments as well, they got her doing everything BUT starbucks. i feel like starbucks is so neglected in our store and they only care when the regional manager does the monthly visit, or at least they pretend to. getting the palette from the back of the store, pulling food, doing orders, and inventory shouldn’t be even done by a regular barista at a corp store and we’ve been doing that for minimum wage. the past two weeks have been really stressful for me and luck was on my side when i got a call back from the corp store that i applied for a month ago.

how is it at a corp store? it’s definitely busier too because of the mobile orders (luckily no DT for that store i got hired at!). did you need to train again when you got hired at a corporate starbucks? thank you so much btw, i would definitely give the corp store a shot!

sorry for the late response, but it’s definitely worth a shot! you do have to do all of the basic modules and trainings again, but if you let them know that you already get the gist of everything because you’re already familiar with the routines then they’ll help fill you in on the pieces you still have questions about! everything is pretty much the same they just have to make more prep and what not, just a matter of readjusting muscle memory and remembering where things are at the new store. i wish you the best of luck and hope corporate treats you a lot better than Tarbucks!

I switched for the same reasons. It just got way out of hand at Target, and when Starbucks in the area would close, all that traffic would come to Tarbucks which was obviously not built to handle that. I made the switch to corporate and am constantly kicking myself for not doing it sooner. I don't know about your area, but the pay is comparable, but the benefits blow Target's (insulting) benefits straight out of the water. Plus you can obviously become a master barista there too.

(I also brought my team leader with me when I switched, so I really doubt your situation would improve just with a promotion!)

Good luck with whichever you choose!

goes for us too! there’s been corp stores that would close down randomly and we would get a bunch of people out of nowhere. minimum 1 person on a shift, on a good shift we would have 3 people and it would be a miracle if we have 4-5 people at once. target’s benefits are nothing compared to the corporate store. the stress is not worth it.

thank you so much! i’m still 3 months in and i’m glad i got the call back.

I'm glad too! Not to understate your abilities, but if they're thinking about making you team lead in that short of time (before you're even able to qualify for a Target 401k, right???) that feels like a red flag.

Corporate feels like an entirely different job, I'm not going to lie, but I am so much less stress having a whole team (do you know what it's like to be able to ignore the buzzer because someone else will get it?? the oven?? having your job when you're *supposed* to clock out because you don't have a laundry list of tasks??). Already knowing the drinks puts you way ahead of the game, so it'll be a dream to have you there I'm sure!
