Question about re-cooking, already cooked food. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by woIves
Maybe this is a bit of an odd question but I'm gonna give it a shot anyway lol. So, I just moved from PA to NY on Sunday. I transferred to a new store for the first time after being at the same store for 3 years (my entire Starbucks career). My previous store was a fresh store and for years, I took advantage of my free food markout for dinner. I've always taken food home cold to put in the fridge or freezer to eat later the same day or another time soon. I dropped into my new store the other day and was quickly (and honestly, quite rudely) informed by the SSV that they weren't allowed to serve food cold. Of course, I was just like "Ah, okay, that's fine" and picked up my food anyway because... free food is free food, even though I didn't intend to eat it until later that night. The problem is? I mean, aside from it being, like... kind of crusty and gross? I don't... honestly know how safe? It is? To stick already cooked food in the fridge for 24-48 hours before reheating it again to eat. I don't know what the date on it was, I don't know how soon it was supposed to go out, I can't really look inside to look at the whole sandwich to make sure it looks... you know, good? It's pretty much just the paninis I'm talking about, or egg bites. I guess I'm just looking for opinions lol. I just don't wanna get sick or anything and I'm not sure how to store them properly after they've already been cooked. I'm bummed but the rules are the rules, I guess. I had so many delicious applications and pairings for all of the food I used to bring home.

You are 100% allowed to take food unwarmed.

Your SSV lied to you. You can 100000009% take unwarmed food. It does not matter.

Hmm.... that's super odd. Is there anything official I can refer to, to show somebody there? I really don't want to be obnoxious about it but... yeah, I definitely found it odd. The SM I was hired by and worked under for my first 2.5 years was suuuuper strict. They followed every rule perfectly, but never once did they have any problem with giving partners or even customers unwarmed food items at request. I haven't met my new SM in person yet, maybe I could ask him? I'm assuming it came from him, though, I don't wanna start any trouble, especially if I don't have anything to actually show to back it up.

That’s not on you. Ask your current shift to show you the standard that says you can’t request unwarmed food as a customer. They won’t find it. You in this scenario are the customer and they should make the moment right.

Our food is already cooked. It’s not a food safety issue. It’s a quality issue.

I think it uuuused to call out that we can serve any food without warming it in the training modules, but I think it’s a hard rule to find written down. Also it might’ve been on the computer barista modules which I’m not sure you can access after the fact. I also don’t know how many versions of training modules ago I’m thinking of, lol.

yep, my SM recently informed us there are no rules (for partners OR customers) saying you cant take food unwarmed/in the package

I mean if you’ve ever had leftovers, it’s the same deal, I suppose. I worked at my college dining hall and as long as it was chilled within a few hours of being cooked, we could reheat and serve the next day as long as it was heated to derivable temperature. I would say it’s safe to eat if you eat it the next day and you fully reheat it. Don’t reheat more than once, don’t wait more than about 36 hours.

Hey! Thank you! I figured it was safe and all, but it's tough to tell how long it can really sit in there before its not such a great idea anymore. Thanks for the guidelines, this was pretty much exactly what I was looking for.

Yeah I feel that. I watch our samples in the case throughout the day and I 100% would not want to eat them by the end of the day, so if they look anything like that, oof. Still edible, still wouldn’t want to eat them. Always excited to throw them away.

You should be able to take items without them being warmed up.

The only rule I know of, at least in Canada, is that you cannot give items still in the package to customers as it doesn't have nutritional information on it.
